Er, I posted this video in October 2006, almost a year before the 40D was announced! But if you look at my 40D review at cameralabs . com you'll see I've compared it against the D80 in the verdict...
No problem! Some of these models are getting on a bit now though, so check the best buys section at cameralabs . com for up-to-date recommendations...
would you please help me to choose a dslr. i am very new in this photography world. since the last 3 month ive done a lot of research about the dslr in the market. i think it is better for me to buy an entry-level dslr, but the dslr must not compromising the image quality. now i am in dilema either to choose canon 400d, canon 450d, nikon d60 or nikon d80. my budget range is about usd 900 ( RM 3000 bcause i am from malaysia. i need a dslr that can give me depth of control 2 create a stunning pic.
All those cameras will do that, so it's a case of choosing the one with the features, look, feel, lens selection and price that you like. Check out our Canon XSi / 450D preview at the Cameralabs site to compare the features, then post on the cameralabs forum if you have any more Qs...
hey hi brother...thanx for the post...m an upcoming photographer nd m about to buy my first dslr cam nd m confused between canon eos 400d nd nikon d80?...this video takes me towards the nikon d80 but still i want to reconfirm it..?...plz suggest me which cam shall i go for between the two?..nd what are their approx costs?..plz do reply..
Hi, you can find a full comparison between the cameras and their current prices on the 10 Mpixel group test at the Cameralabs . com website - there's a link to the right of the video window above... check the verdict page...
On the subject of the LCDs lacking in visibility in direct sunlight: I own a Canon 400D and the LCD is perfectly visible even in direct sunlight, provided the brightness is turned up fully.
I'm looking for one of the cameras you are looking for. If you had to choose, would you "personally" buy the Nikon D80 or the Cannon digital rebel xti?
A year on since this video was released Canon (EF-S 18-55 IS) and Nikon (Soon?) are releasing kit lenses with Image Stabilization, so the point about the Sony having in-body stabilization is going to become a moot point, since all consumer dSLRs would have some form of stabilization.
I would think the focus would now shift to the advantages and disadvantages of Lens shift (Canon & Nikon) Vs Sensor Shift (Sony, Olympus etc) Image Stabilization.
That's a very good point, although we may have to wait for the EOS '450D' before Canon officially bundles its budget DSLR with the 18-55mm IS lens... some stores may bundle it with other models sooner though.
I forgot to say that Sony has a lot of potential, promising a lot for the future of their SLR range and lenses. I would suggest any one to do the same and not get fixated on a Brand, as I have moved from Nikon to Canon without regret.
Very good Review, liked it, but why choose the D80, when it is a semi pro camera? The others are considered as the basic level SLRs. I have scrutinised the Canon and Nikon, testing them through controlled light conditions with the same Sigma model lens and my choice for picture quality only, but not for body build, would be the Canon.
Ive used Sony/Olympus/Nikon gear over the years but when I went and tried all the DSLR 10MP camera's out the D80's quality just totally left anything else for dead. As soon as you pick up the D80 it screams "Im professional kit", its well worth the extra money.
Bottom line is the image quality is great on all of them, if you get the 400D simply because the noise is .1% better you miss out on a lot. Personally I think it looks like a cheap hunk of plastic. I am for the D80 all the way.
Hi everyone, thanks for your comments! In terms of comparing picture quality, this video is just a small part of a much bigger review which you can find at the Cameralabs website. There you'll find resolution and noise comparisons and lots more! Hope that helps...
Fraid not Rhilton4u! We're actually both wrong, although the British 'Nick-on" pronunciation is closer to the real thing. Nikon is a Japanese company, so it's pronounced "Knee-kon". You know it makes sense! After all, I bet you don't pronounce their lenses as "Nai-kor", right? :)
Hi Chukkaa87, digital SLRs work differently to compact digital cameras. Normal DSLRs, like the Canon 400D, Nikon D80 and Sony A100 cannot use their screens to compose pictures in the same way as a compact. You have to use the viewfinder. There are some exceptions though. Olympus has a Live View system which lets you use the screen on a DSLR for composing. This is on the old E-330 and the new E-410 and E-510 (out in Summer), but you can see how it works on our Panasonic L1 video!
good video but it should've been pointed out that the antishake in the sony isn't as effective as similar systems in Canon and Nikon lenses. It's less effective because it's in the body, not in the lens.
I also doubt whether anyone willing to spend this amount of money on a camera will be willing to make adjustments to their images using the 2.5inch screeen.
In general stick to Canon or Nikon who actually make cameras. But if you want a tv or hifi then buy a Sony who make electronic goods.
I also went for the Nikon. I bought the body and not any kits and also bought myself a Tamron 18-200mm lens that I am more than happy with. This is my first DSLR and I am stepping up from enthusiast camera Sony DSC-R1. I did however have a hard time choosing between the Nikon and the Sony Alpha. Anti shake was appealing but my decision landed on the Nikon finally.
Top notch review Gordon! Mate, this informative video was just perfect for a guy like me wanting to get into the DSLR world. Thanks for keeping it simple and highlighting the features of each.
I've decided to go with the Sony Alpha n placed my order hehe. Cant wait to start shootin!
The Nikon D80 was LIGHT YEARS ahead of the Canon 400d. It was or should I say is a FAR better camera in EVERY way.
Canon always "Scrimp" on build quality on its cheaper DSLR cameras.

But Lenses with Stabalization are still going to be more expensive?
saucymonk 4 years ago
Compared to non-Stabilized lenses Yes, since their always going to be more mechanically complex than non-stabilized lenses.
But prices will go down as time goes by and Canon and Nikon and them release more Image Stabilized lenses.
And maybe it might become a moot point if Canon and Nikon replace their whole lens line-up with stabilized lenses.
