I just read up on the Cujo disappearance, and turns out that if you leave a dog sitting for a long time and he does nothing, he will run away. Also, perhaps you accidentally clicked on him to get up, then you left hm home and he teleported to you. He could've gotten stuck outside, thus answering the mystery.
