As is true of the greatest coloraturas--Melba, Tetrazzini, Galli-Curci--Verlet can take a simple melody and transform it into something magical by means of pure legato singing. She is not dependent on coloratura pyrotechnics, but she certainly had that as well. This is the kind of song Melba should also have recorded.
