Ive watched the first 2 films of this triology so far, and im a little confused by events and facts due to my lack of knowledge about Yorkshire, and the Ripper, so can somebody summarize what all this is about to me?
guys (you that have seen it) was it just the preacher for the whole time or was it also others? (I mean the girl killings, not the others, that was the corrupted police/mob)
I saw these films a few months ago on the "Sundance" channel. They are absolutely amazing. The acting is universally brilliant and the writing is first rate.
I seriously flail whenever I see Andrew Garfield <3 Why are all the movies he's in so intense or depressing? Is it because of his big sad eyes? Seriously, I fully expect Spider-Man to be the saddest thing I've ever seen, at this point.
What fantastic viewing. This is sheer class, I've never seen anything which has gripped me or affected me quite as much. So tense and dark. I cried at the end when BJ felt free and when Jobson hugged Michael. They are all brilliant but I think the third one is the best, because it explains a lot of what happened in the first two, and the redemption of Jobson! "Evil triumphs when good men do nothing".
I spent the whole day watching this yesterday. It was released over here in the USA as 3 movies. I was totally blown away. The acting was outstanding (I could spot the odd fake Yorkshire accent here and there as I am from Yorkshire). But nevertheless it was truly a great piece of work!
This was brilliant I was addicted disturbing though and sad. The first one with eddie was my fave. Andrew was great and so robert sheehan, I really loved roberts strange character even though he was screwed up. Paddy was gave a great performance also in 1980, thought he was great since dead mans shoes.
To be fair, it's three films, all of them several years apart and with different viewpoints on the same killer, so it is pretty difficult to tie them together.
Also, you can watch them here on YouTube, I believe.
@wedgeff7 I understand all that, but I'm just not a fan of this new style of movie trailer. The constant cuts on the visuals is just too jarring for me. We don't need to see every bit of action in the movie. I would rather just see the protagonist in hot pursuit of the killer with various conversations going round and round in his head with some of key visuals fading in and out super-imposed over it. That would have given the exact same effect of telling the story without hurting my brain.
@ImmortalDestructor Oh, I can understand your dislike for the jarring effect, but again, in its defence, it is a trilogy of full-length films crammed into a short space of time.
Plus, it has three protagonists, so there's not really any one story it can follow.
They're currently showing all three of these films on SBS1 over three nights here in Oz.
Thus far, I've watched "1974" and "1980" and I have to say, hand on heart, that these are amongst the best films to come out of the British film industry in the last thirty years.
Brilliantly acted, languidly paced and subtly scripted, Hollywood wishes that it could make films this good
Yikes, started watching the first movie last night. Didn't expect anything since I never even heard of the trilogy. Now, 24 hours later, I've seen all three of them and I loved every minute watching. You never saw what was coming around the next corner...
@TheZebrianna2 What did you think? I read a book about the Yorkshire Ripper when I was younger. Initially I was confused, but I loved the movies. You?
I did my profile essay on The Yorkshire Ripper for my final year, this looks interesting, also Andrew Garfield is in it, I think he's one of the most promising actors of the 21st century....
I got this in the mail recently to review for my website and I can say that this film was amazing! If you want this film go buy the Blu-Ray because honestly it's the only good way to see it next to seeing in the theater!
To anyone who hasn't seen these, I would highly recommend them. They're very atmospheric and creepy, and the characters are really brought to life by the excellent cast. The way they're shot, too, using techniques from the respective years they are set in, makes it all the more great.
I watched all three back to back. It's totally worth it, but emotionally draining and left me with a deep-seated fear of the North. It's the best crime drama I've seen.
Also, is the title meant to be a pun on the fairytale motif (no spoilers, but a major figure in the story is called The Wolf, and other characters are frequently compared to the pigs, owls, and rats.) and the fact that its set in the West RIDING of Yorkshire, or am I just reading to much into that?
