Too bad the recording isn't better balanced. The cello line simply disappears, so the whole thing seems top-heavy. Like another commenter here, I agree that I would prefer a more historically-informed performance. No doubt these are fine performers.
the harpsicord solo is increadible! I ve listened it almost 50 timnes but never seems to amaze. Also the violin-flute duet is beyond anything. This is a supreme piece, just like Brandenburg no.2 1st mov. , ahead of all other music.
I enjoyed this performance more than many more renowned ones I have heard. It is a live performance and there are some note errors here and there but the music they make is lovely! Thanks for posting!
I think there is truly nothing authentic about this performance: (1) modern instruments, (2) awful, unnecessary vibrato and (3) a cadenza which works on my nerves. Truly, it isn't even worth comparing it to Leonhardt, I think Gould is even more authentic, or is that exaggerated? No, I'm afraid not! M. Sargasso
Hi, I'm Debby Boyer and your mom-in-law, Jean Johnson, is my first cousin. We were recently in KS together and she told me how marvelous your playing is...she was so right! I'm on You Tube in videos also, but I play a whole different kind of music!! A tad low-brow to your 'up there' brow!!!! Anyway, I love that particular concerto and never heard it live before...thanks! Cousin Debby Boyer from Florida
Not bad, but it's a mistake to replace the recorder with a flute.

@csbiro Actually, this piece is scored for "flauto traverso", or transverse flute. This is the name of what is essentially the modern flute.

i think she remembered the rest of the piece and the page turner is just standing there out of habit. maybe the music fell in the harpsichord.

Some time between 6:08 and 6:30, the sheet music disappears from the harpsichord. What happened and why is the page turner still standing there?

Great vibe!! Elaine Comparone delivers the cadenza in a spectacular manner. And it's a live rendition so that gives it much more value.

can some1 tell me wat cadenza actually means and how it works with this piece and why it was bad in this performance??
stefomate 2 years ago
It's the Harpsichord solo.
lee4lolo 2 years ago
The purpose of the cadenza is to show what you know, and she sure can play that thing. Maybe YOU should be practicing instead of watching YouTube.

I think this is the best modern instrument performance of this I've ever heard, but it's nothing compared to a good period instrument performance.

Great playing but the Cadenza was completely embarrassing. Quite a shame.
