  • Can't wait for more on this series. We think we're all so clever in this time period when we've regressed in so many ways all in the name of convenience. As our power company is asking for and will probably get another rate hike...we really NEED to do MORE things like this. Thanks! I found you through Kasin's vids. :)

  • How did I miss this series 'til now?? Video #3 popped up in my sub box and I had to go looking for the first two. I love stuff like this. I haven't checked out the links yet, but a question I had was -- how could one make this work with a well instead of city water?? Our water comes into the house from the well in the basement. But, I'm thinking it's still an excellent idea to warm up a significant amount of water up in the warmer months, even if you had to access it outside.

  • @Michigansnowpony, Just put your solar heater between your well pump and your existing hot water heater.

  • Our pump is a submersible down in the well casing -- everything is buried with the water coming into the house down in the basement (where the pressure tank is) so no access to sunshine inbetween. That's what I can't picture -- how one would use this method in the case of a well (where you didn't have an old-fashioned well-pit anyway). It's a neat concept though.

  • @Michigansnowpony, sent you a drawing, on Skype

  • great water heater box, everyone should have one to take advantage of global warming! btw, of interest if that thing can get to 152- could larger heater boxes be made to heat the water enough to turn generator turbines?

  • @corinth1121, No because water has to boil at pressure to produce live steam. 10 pounds of steam, requires over 240 degrees f.

  • similar tech also applies for pre-heating air in winter - one guy on YT specializes in soda cans and drain pipes - impressive results !

  • @2manytaxes, I have that one planned for a later video. I've saved up about 500 pop cans myself, and scrounged a set of patio doors already LOL

  • deveryone on the planet should have one of those!!!!! Think what a difference THAT would make

  • Excellent! I never thought of a water heater of this size. I have a camping shower which consists of a large rubber bag with a small shower spout. You lay the bag in the sun until it heats up and you hang the bag up and use gravity to move the water out of the bag. These are fairly inexpensive to purchase under $20.

  • Yes, sir that is good stuff right there. That should be easy to put together.

  • question? what about when its COLD out side.. like lower 20's?! wont you be working against your self then??

  • @danratsnapnames, Yea that is a problem, have been thinking I should be able to get 7 months out of the year, before I have to drain it. We do get the occasional day in the 60's in the winter though, you could fill it for that day (In a SHTF. situation), a hot shower once in a while is better than none. LOL

  • i think setting up a boiler over a open pit fire would be good for those days when its to cold out to make it work. but you still have to remember, whenever fresh water is exposed to sunlight, it will cause it to grow algy! so that nice clean glass may turn to green slime after a month or so.

  • @danratsnapnames, There is no water exposed to the sunlight, (and air)

  • ?? looks like the lid allows sun light to warm the water, doesn't that expose the water to sunlight? or is there an internal trank that is dark colored, cant see the real life build in the video, just the conception. but if the sun is not hitting the water directly, then heck, should be ok.

  • @danratsnapnames , Review the video, and check out the links for your answer

Looking forward to the next one.

  • That is gonna rock, and I see you are using this new video editing software. I am sure you should get many new subscribers very quickly. I am looking forward to these other vids. I am already drafting plans to build a mini version of that other technology to run a small generator. Chers!

  • Goathollow. Your new series will be a hit, I'm sure. How about solar cookers, too?

Thanks for the link to my Bread Box Water Heater vids, Today, temp in Tucson was high 60's. Inside the box at 4:00 it was150 degrees. I had to add a little cold water to temper the hot water coming from the Bread Box for my afternoon shower.

On Bread Box, I stripped off the top glass, sponged out leak water. Will let dry and use Henry's caulking to dry up top leak problem. I'll document on video later.

  • @KasinH, Solar cookers are on "My list", as well as another couple of cookers.

  • Always open for new ideas.

  • I subscribe to KasinH. I highly recommend her videos.

Love your new series' direction. Can't wait to see what you have in store for us.

  • great vid, intersting series , looks like. recomended to a bunch of friends, you may have a upsurge in subscribers , 5 stars.

  • very cool..........or should i say toastie warm........looking forward to the series.....

  • @Skybirdbird, Hmmm wonder what a hot shower with home made soap will bring me in barter? (A couple of years into SHTF)

  • you will have them waiting in line :-)

  • @GoatHollow some amunition and silver for sure.

  • ★★★★★...Great vid, thanks

  • @3charter, WOW you actually said something LOL

  • great concept for a series....thanks!!

  • There is definitely a coincidence of needs between the self sufficient prepper and the environmental mother earther. Both are seeking local electric power, air/water heating, alternative vehicle fuels, rain water harvesting, and food production techniques. "Earthships" and other designs that have emerged since the 1970's (with minor mods) can be utilized to lessen impact of a "collapse." I'm glad all their efforts will finally be put to good use :)

  • I am sure this is going to be a great series.

A water pre-heater any where near $100 is a bargain.

  • Great info looking foward to the rest of these videos.

  • As you have said.....we have peaked ...and we need to refresh ourselves on how they did it 'way back when' to get us through this as painlessly as possible.

  • Cool idea, Ive been working on a lawn mower generator for my solar backup battery. It makes DC current and has an alternator that sends juice to the batts. Google lawn mower generator and you'll find some good instructions. Hell lawn mowers are everywhere so motors are not in short supply

  • @NovusChaoMundi, Already have the horizontal briggs motor, and the G.M. alternator scrounged up for one of my own. I'll go you one better and in a later episode of this series... show you how to run it without any gasoline.

  • I'd like to see that set up thanks
