I'm surprised at the amount of dislikes and negative comments on this video. I kind of expected more from the followers of TED talks...Anyway, surprised no one pointed out it's Franz, not Frans. Other than that, good video!
As a vocal performance major, I really want people to enjoy classical vocal music and opera. TED, please invite some more audience-friendly and talented singers!
First I was not sure if I like it or not. Then I listened to the song interpreted by other singers who are not so off on the pronounciation and now I know I like the song but this here sucks. Maybe Miss de Niesen can sing, but she sure as hell can not sing german.
Please visit my channel for the unpopular truth about homosexuality.
A person does not need hatred or any kind of phobia in order to acknowledge important differences between heterosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption and homosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption. Even non-religious people know this.
Homosexual activists, with support from the media, have succeeded at framing themselves as noble victims; it's an effective way to push a social agenda.
I guess I will have to say it three times before my point enters your thick skull. Taste in music has nothing to do with intelligence. Just becuase you listen to this shit doesnt make you smart. What makes me uncomfortable is having to share this planet with fucktards like yourself.

There are plenty, plenty more awaiting your discovery. Great music does a science-minded body good! :)
is she gonna produce noise the whole video? i thaught htis was popular science stuff on ted, thats why i subscribed. not for some pretentious and tbh unentertaining singing.
@86Corvus 275 people weren't entertained huh? The audience wanted a little exercise when they stood up clapping their hands? I hate discussing subjectivity, but when you can't even recognize talent and people being entertained in front of your eyes, it really begs the question: did you pay attention? @guyboy625 she is not doing it the right way for you. Some people think they belong to the elite when they say they like this and for them is probably a good thing and good for their self esteem ;p
@guyboy625 I probably failed with my english. A large part of the who DO like this do it because it makes them feel elite-y. No offense or whatever to you mister guyboy.
@rakketakke Really? Talking about elitism on TED? Everything about TED is elite. All the lecturers are top of the line and beyond mediocrity. There is absolutely nothing pop about TED. I also think it funny you understand people's motivations for what they like, let alone met someone who likes classical. You couldn't possibly genuinely like TED with such a simple-minded approach as that. See how I did that? Enjoyable isn't it?
@lord666christoph Hmmpf. Nice to hear that you think I'm a funny person :D. Btw thank you very much, because now I have a perfect example of a person who thinks he's better than the other, 'normal', unexceptional people, but all the arrogance you bring with it ruins it so badly that you ended up even below those non-special people. You get my opinion right?
@glmiri A good friend of mine is a professional classical singer, and she is very careful to learn correct diction in whatever language she's singing, even if the words themselves are learned by rote.
@lord666christoph Interesting, I taught its a dying art. After your comment, I closed all my windows, my room door and switch off the lights and start to listen to it. For few seconds it was horrible but after I began to relax and enjoyed it.
@bobominah That is true for the United States, but its gaining again. I think it has to do with the fast paced culture. Opera and some classical tells a story, but without the fast pace and explosions, it escapes people. The foreign language doesn't help. In Europe opera is slowly gaining in popularity. Some people sing along with the music at festivals, that sell out. Try listening to Che Gelida Manina, after reading the lyrics and synopsis. Knowing what goes on helps a lot.
@RevyNai I have no view on her performance. Perhaps I should but I don't. If I was there for the day, I might enjoy a little musical interlude, but I wasn't. I enjoy thought provoking talks on a number of issues. This was not a talk nor thought provoking.
Only thing not perfect was the intro – as usually. Exclusive left brainers with zero rythm, social or artistic skills seem to be quite trigger happy for the thumb down, while those who get it are too busy appreciating to make use of binary mood expressions.
This would fall under the Entertainment purview. Now, you may not find this enjoyable, that's understandable. But music/singing/etc counts as entertainment, thus, is acceptable for a TEDtalk.
@jadapac43 It is a forum for art, as the description tells you. Music is art and this is superb. But if you prefer fast food go to Mc Donald's and not to a fine restaurant.
Not quite what I was expecting from the description, but... my word! That was delightful.. and a witty delivery as well. Incredibly beautiful woman with a wonderful voice, who knows how to express both the passion and humor in a piece at the same time. My thanks....
@tiagoaoa Some people don't think this is good music. And I hope you respect the fact that they can think about it what they like. Met je dogredenen...
@tiagoaoa It's not "good" for everyone, people have different tastes. People dislike it because the channel they are subscribed to is generally for talks about meaningful and/or interesting topics, not music.
@iHeardYouLiekThem The E in TED stands for Entertainment. Also, the same argument that this is not good music for everyone can be applied to the talks not being "meaningful" for everyone all the time. I'm just implying that it is not a big deal if they post a musical performance instead of a talk from time to time.
Just be thankfull for the high quality channel TED has. Don't act like you are entitled to anything. You all will probably never ever have anything wothwhile to contribute to the world.
Meh she is talented but... idk if there wasn't a description underneath telling what it was about i don't think anyone would understand i would be better if she then gave a short talk about her ideas or something, just a little "context"
@v10redline I quote the video description: TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Opera is the arts, and the idea worth spreading is in the same place (description): Can opera be ever-so-slightly sexy? you know... saying that opera isnt this impenetrable high-strung artform that it is infamous for being
:( I usually can't stand the vibrato of an opera singer. And sadly, in this case it isn't any different. So what's worth spreading? I don't know, sorry.
Why people don't like music? I don't get it What is not like, I was weary of an awful performance when I first saw all the dislikes. However she was great. Whats wrong I don't get it.
In my eyes I feel sorry for these two clearly very talented musicians to have recieved more dislikes than likes. However due to my own ignorance and unfounded, yet profound dislike for opera I have to vote this down on principle.
Not that I possess huge knowledge on the topic, however, in my expierance a lot of operas have sexual under currents, so I don't agree with the video's description, wheather they succeed in their sexyness or not is different matter.
@grungerlife TED stands for Technology, ENTERTAINMENT, Design. Can you guess which category this video falls into? Hint; I gave a small hint. Also sometimes ideas can manifest in the form of music.
it disheartens me that people can dislike beautiful singing just because it is not thier cup of tea. She sings the aria well and if you dont like opera music, when you realised what it was you could have just not listened rather then ripping into something that has nothing wrong with it.
@BananaCluck people dislike it and they are perfectly entitled to do that, as you are to press the like button.
Personally i thought the singing was good, not great and the aria is by no means a masterpiece. And the syncopated claps in the middle were both unsuited to the piece and slightly out of time in bits.
Not trying to start a flamewar, just saying it is perfectly understandable that people wouldnt like it
@HonkeyTonTon Whoopie-shit. I didn't notice her drifting. Still - it's a pretty decent piece... and I say that as someone who is not a fan of Opera at all. This felt a bit more contemporary than some of the stuff you hear... and foibles of this particular live performance aside, it was pretty decent.

@BananaCluck I agree

@HonkeyTonTon She's clapping the offbeat.
Vortex42 5 months ago
@Vortex42 thats what syncopated means.
she drifts inbetween the beat and the offbeat at 2:55
HonkeyTonTon 5 months ago
@HonkeyTonTon Whoopie-shit. I didn't notice her drifting. Still - it's a pretty decent piece... and I say that as someone who is not a fan of Opera at all. This felt a bit more contemporary than some of the stuff you hear... and foibles of this particular live performance aside, it was pretty decent.
