Thank you for your kind words. Yes, it is always very impressive to watch the great models from Gerold. And as he is doing all of them in the same scale (1/200) it is even more stunning when he shows his entire fleet together.
This model is astounding in every way right down to the last detail. I a getting a Queen Mary 2 1/700 scale model and seeing this only spurs me on to build and convert her to a rc model, tell Gerold his model is fantastic
I am not quite shure what you mean with maquettes model. But anyway the SS France model is scratch built so it is from no company or the like. Every part hand made by Gerold, one of our model masters in the club.
The props are fairly in scale and the ballast is normally use just the balance the model and for reaching the water line. The speed is controlled by the RPM of the motors. As a matter of fact most scale RC boats are too fast (and they look even faster in the videos). Therefore driving scale speed is a question of discipline of the respective captain (and I know by my self, this is sometimes very hard when having power at hand ;) )
This is in Switzerland, in Wohlen AG to be precise. Our club has a show every year on the last April weekend. The video shots were taken on the occasion of such a show.
It almost seems that you would like to join us the next time ;). Maybe the way from the U.S. to Switzerland might be a problem but we always like to be surprised.
It is in the sports complex of the city so normaly it is a swimming pool. But at this specific weekend our club is sponsored by the city of Wohlen by offering us and everybody else who might join us at this weekend the pool for driving with our boats.
Many thanks for uploading this gorgeous footage of your beautiful model. It gives me inspiration to build the simple kit I have of the SS France, that will pale in comparison to your achievement, but be a lovely piece for my collection.
What would be very cool is that if your team makes 2 maybe 3 smaller sort of tug boats and that they are helping the SS France (or any other model RC's) to tow, pilot and dock somewhere! :D
Yes, you are completely right! Actually it is our way of thinking too (so you might fit to our team, when comming to Switzerland ;-) ). But to achieve a maximum in such a thing, next to the same scale, the tugs need to be from the same epoche and region. As of this, Rolf is working on such tugs for his Jeremiah O'Brien. To do so for SS France or QE2 the tugs would end up fairly tiny as of the small scale 1/200. Towing would be a problem as of stability - unfortunatelly :(.
Gerold is another club member who does modelling over quite a period of time in which he became a master. We younger builders just might hope reaching once this level of artistic handcraft. Like in many other things, training is key - next to the lucky talent someone has ;-)
No, unfortunatelly I didn't had the luck. But at least I have the chance to see the stunning model of Gerold. He is really a master of modelship building. Thanks for watching!
Well, the material itself is maybe a few hundred dollars, depending on how many details are realized (eg. lights, sound, smoke from the stack, etc). The real "expensive" part is the work to spend for building a model (including the time for training). Gerold does such models for quite a couple of years.
Merely all of our models are powered by electro motors, the SS France too.
Such motors in all sizes and power specs may be bought from modeler shops. Personally I use quite often motors from Graupner.
If not using it for power boats you might just go for the 'old fashioned' way with brush motors. For high power brush less motor are more efficiant (and - of course - more expensive).
Normal motors you might buy for a just a little so you might even try different types.
To anybody of you who is interested in building your own model of the France:
New Maquette's wooden kit (Scale 1:200, Length 1580mm Width 170mm) might serve as base for your own model. But keep in mind that this kit might NOT exactly provide the same level of detail as you see in the video out of the box. 'Some' extra work might be needed.
Well, I did not make this ship but it is made from a club collegue of us. But anyway, to do such a model you need experiance and for sure a lot of patience! Mostly it is also quite hard to get good blueprints when doing a model from scratch.
I don't know if I did handle something wrong but your comment seems has disappered. Sorry for that! Anyway regarding your question "How long and much did this recreation cost? " I do have to get back to Gerold. I will post an answer as soon as I know. Many thanks for your interest in our hobby. Maybe you wanna try it once too ;-).

Very nice model! Do you scale down the propellers / add ballast in order to get the speed of the boat to scale? Thanks for sharing.

cool boat, does it have just one motor or more than that?
chadro85 9 months ago
@chadro85
There are 4 props but I don't know if all are driven by separate motors. I might check that out on the next meeting with Gerold.
RetoFor 9 months ago
@RetoFor
Ok, I talked to Gerold yesterday and he confirmed the 4 props which are all driven by a motor of its own - making 4 of them, of course.
