Laughton was a chameleon in his roles. From body posture, mannerisms to voice and even modulation, he was extraordinary. Just fascinating to watch. Vivien always put her whole heart into her role but never overacted. She held her with Laughton and that is an accomplishment.
Some great actors in this old movie but Laughton steals every scene he's in - can't quite figure out why. His acting seems more stagey than filmic and yet he is always believable and just as important - likeable. Apart from his undeniable amazing charisma he had the ability to use his 'whole instrument' as they say.
@bbcisrubbish The film's correct title is "St Martin's Lane", the title used here was thought up for the US distribution, as they had no knowledge of London's streets or St Martin's Lanes's reputation.
@swallin19. Thank you for the information. They would get confused with something they don't know!
As I said, the film was quite enjoyable. I have made enquiries here and there about "THE RAKES PROGRES" with Rex Harrison with no results. As Mr. Macawber said "something will turn up".

Were Leigh and Harrison ever more beautiful My theory is that human beauty peaks at about 19 or 20.

Shouldn't the title be PAVEMENTS of London? Obviously made with the American market in mind. Anyway, very enjoyable.
The Rex Harrison film "THE RAKES PROGRESS" was excellent, has anybody a copy they could post please? Thanks in anticipation.
