That's the actual sad part, not that it was true...but that this idiot can't contemplate a hearing person being able to sign and translate everything to deaf people. Whatever. Of course the he knows the signer can hear and translate, but the main point he was making with the joke is that you usually go see a ventriloquist to hear a guy talking to himself with funny voices and puppets. That doesn't translate as well with signs. But even then just because he's making fin of the situation doesn't mean he's an idiot, it means he keeps his shows fresh by adding his experiences to future shows.

I don't think it's making fun of deaf people in general. I think it's supposed to make fun of the fact that someone brought deaf people to see a ventriloquist. To me, the joke is on the signer, not the poor deaf people.

All good comedy has potentially offending material. A good comedian doesn't worry about offending people, and just tells jokes. It's just like the Joker once said, "You're always taking shots from folks who just don't get the joke."
