When did they have extreme close-ups of mouths in TOS? I don't think so. The 2001 reason was that they thought HAL couldn't hear them - but it could read lips. It was a plot point. Not used in Trek. I could be wrong. Feel free to tell me which episode(s) did this.

First, it would be great if the people you interviewed about their insights into "Star Trek" actually knew the show & television in general.

And second, when talking about the gadgets, etc. of the series you have to take into consideration the times in which it was made. Yes, engineers & sci-fi writers of that time did dream of "solid state" computers & user-friendly artificial intelligence, but the audience wouldn't have understood them. The show would have failed even worse than it did.

Operating your computer and typing text using voice recognision programs are available now.

I had a very basic version ten years ago. Merely to type font in Word Documents. Think it was called 'You Talk I Type' although you had to spend two days reading words to it to set-up. Only to find out that when you clearly spoke 'You Talk I Type' the word text on screen would appear: 'you balk eye bite' .

After a month it was un installed and burned in the fireplace.

Wow, it's sure hard to criticize a piece of fiction trying to predict what technology might be like in the far future 50 years later. Of course the lights and the elements are wrong, but they are just a means to convey that the computer is working, not unlike HDD/pwr lights.

Keyboards certainly aren't the future, and while voice activation isn't that good yet, it will only get better. Soon enough it will be direct mental interface though.
