The 80's started a year or two early- Maggie coming in in the UK, and musically stuff like this and in the US, Devo etc. Once disco ran out of steam/ into a wall, (and punk had moderated/ intellectualised into New Wave), there was more room for synthpop like this.

If you go by Pop historians or Billboard, this was the big "new wave" hit at the time, but I only remember "Cars", "Whip It" and "Video Killed the Radio Star". I only remember hearing this song later and it always felt like cheap self-parody to me.
