Doctors have, & always will protect their financial & MD admissions territory. Most who attend medical school don't dedicate their lives to their patients, but to their life long level of comfort. If they were more concerned about patients, they'd slide their rates for the poor. They protect any change in the wasteful med. school system (where 75% the information is lost by your final year.) They're well trained mechanics, but will forever protect their system & wealth w/ lawyers & politicians.

My brother's a doctor, Medicare pays a fraction of real costs. A billing mistake happens when an “official” comes in two or three years after you have long forgot the visit and arbitrarily decides you that your billing person charged 70% of your cost not 50%. They then demand a large fine, all this without any due process. If you ask for due process they are more than willing to shut you down, the hell with the patients you have dedicated your life to. He don't take medicare now!

So if you make a mistake on the Medicare paperwork, the government considered it fraud? Even if the company made a legitimate mistake and wasn't intent on committing fraud? Even the Mayo clinic made mistakes and had to pay fines? So if this company was so large, it's obviously going to make more mistakes than other smaller companies based on the higher volume of patients.

An uninsured American may have to pay upwards of 50 000 thousand dollars to get a broken leg fixed. In Canada you don't pay a cent. When I broke my leg I went to the ER and had a cast on within an hour, free of charge and no paper work.

Privatized health insurance will ALWAYS be more efficient and cost effective than government run healthcare. And there are many insurance companies that have contracts which will make them legally liable if they drop you if you get an illness such as cancer. You should take a closer look at your iconic Canadian healthcare system. Notice how income taxes are in the high 60 percentages? Not exactly free, is it?

I share your frustration. The system is not perfect. That's why we need to work harder to improve it. As far as punishing the bad corporate america, some were punished, like this guy. But some got bailout instead. And I agree, the bail out was the worst thing the government could have done. Instead of them being punished, they were rewarded and salvaged. It's un-American and it's unjust. We need to show Washington that we are not ignorant as they think we are.
This goes nothing to the point of why the government cannot offer health care. All the arguments to the contrary are not even slightly disuasive even on the most cursory level. I have not heard one viable argument that is not based on fear tactics and disinformation.

This CNN Anchor is IGNORANT, to this day if a bill is sent to Medicaid/Medicare and an error is made (i.e. an "e" that looks like a "c", that is considered FRAUD. Medicaid/care does not care that the work was actually performed. Conversely billing errors in the Govts favor is not acknowledged.
Thank God we can be diagnosed and can get into a hospital even though the costs are high. The alternative is you will be processed based upon your age and the success of the outcome. As an example if you are 28 years old and want back surgery because you have a herniated disk, currently in the US you can get surgery and have the debilitating pain removed. Not so in UK. Not so in Canada. In fact you dont qualify for surgery until your mid 40s.

A friend was in the local hospital for surgery, and was sent home 24 hours after the surgery. Recieved a bill of more than $44,000.00 for the hospital stay. I suppose that is something you, yourself, can easily pay.
Hope neither you nor your family are diagnosed with rectal cancer and then have your insurance decline to pay for the surgery and hospital. But you're probably super rich. I am not.

Your situation is a red flag for the new health care proposal. there is only two solutions I can see 1. force(!) your doctor to accept medicare or whatever new plan will be. 2. pay what you doctor charges from medicare budget. My personal opposition to the new health care is pretty much based on it. I probably will survive fine if I have to pay 10% tax, but I am not ok with government pricing on the procedures.

Well bill my apologies, the thing is capitalism is what has driven health care to be what it is today, not in the sense of cost, but technology, drugs, and very good facilities for healthcare, what the problem has been is insurance fraud, unwarented malpractice suits, injury frauds, etc..these activities have driven the cost of "malpractice insurance" for docs and hospitals, and also driven the cost of health insurance 4 individuals, the problem is not capitalism, but fraud in many levels.

I think the thing Scott was trying to say is that the $1.7 Billion dollars his company payed to the Government spanned 10 years from 1987-1997 while columbia healthcare literally had 100.000 patients per day through 1000 facilities. Doing the math.. thats 36,500,000 patients per year or 365 million patients in 10 years which they over payed 1.7 Billion divided by 365 million patients means each patient overpayed... a staggering $4 and 65 cents.

And so when all they care about is raking in as many premiums as possible while shelling out as little coverage as possible, well, is it any surprise?

My brother's a doctor, Medicare pays a fraction of real costs. A billing mistake happens when an “official” comes in two or three years after you have long forgot the visit and arbitrarily decides you that your billing person charged 70% of your cost not 50%. They then demand a large fine, all this without any due process. If you ask for due process they are more than willing to shut you down, the hell with the patients you have dedicated your life to. He don't take medicare now!

So if you make a mistake on the Medicare paperwork, the government considered it fraud? Even if the company made a legitimate mistake and wasn't intent on committing fraud? Even the Mayo clinic made mistakes and had to pay fines? An uninsured American may have to pay upwards of 50 000 thousand dollars to get a broken leg fixed. In Canada you don't pay a cent. When I broke my leg I went to the ER and had a cast on within an hour, free of charge and no paper work.

Privatized health insurance will ALWAYS be more efficient and cost effective than government run healthcare. And there are many insurance companies that have contracts which will make them legally liable if they drop you if you get an illness such as cancer. Maybe you are not familiar with our current health system. The government already subsidizes health insurance through tax breaks given to private corporations to offer insurance. The government took over this decades ago, and that is when the problems started. Government intervention has been the problem all along, and now we are to give more control to them?

I share your frustration. The system is not perfect. That's why we need to work harder to improve it. As far as punishing the bad corporate america, some were punished, like this guy. But some got bailout instead. And I agree, the bail out was the worst thing the government could have done. Instead of them being punished, they were rewarded and salvaged. It's un-American and it's unjust. We need to show Washington that we are not ignorant as they think we are.

This CNN Anchor is IGNORANT, to this day if a bill is sent to Medicaid/Medicare and an error is made (i.e. an "e" that looks like a "c", that is considered FRAUD. Medicaid/care does not care that the work was actually performed. I'm not saying that there isn't fraud, there is, just like there's incompetence in the Govt. workforce, but is the Govt. saying there should not be correctable billing errors. Thank God we can be diagnosed and can get into a hospital even though the costs are high. The alternative is you will be processed based upon your age and the success of the outcome. As an example if you are 28 years old and want back surgery because you have a herniated disk, currently in the US you can get surgery and have the debilitating pain removed. Not so in UK. Not so in Canada. In fact you dont qualify for surgery until your mid 40s.

A friend was in the local hospital for surgery, and was sent home 24 hours after the surgery. Recieved a bill of more than $44,000.00 for the hospital stay. I suppose that is something you, yourself, can easily pay.
Hope neither you nor your family are diagnosed with rectal cancer and then have your insurance decline to pay for the surgery and hospital. But you're probably super rich. I am not.

Your situation is a red flag for the new health care proposal. there is only two solutions I can see 1. force(!) your doctor to accept medicare or whatever new plan will be. 2. pay what you doctor charges from medicare budget. My personal opposition to the new health care is pretty much based on it. I probably will survive fine if I have to pay 10% tax, but I am not ok with government pricing on the procedures.

Well bill my apologies, the thing is capitalism is what has driven health care to be what it is today, not in the sense of cost, but technology, drugs, and very good facilities for healthcare, what the problem has been is insurance fraud, unwarented malpractice suits, injury frauds, etc..these activities have driven the cost of "malpractice insurance" for docs and hospitals, and also driven the cost of health insurance 4 individuals, the problem is not capitalism, but fraud in many levels.

actually no it wasn't vegas. We subsidize research and development. Meaning taxpayers pay companies, and Univerisites to research and develop new drugs, and tehcnologies. The ripoff here is pharma companies are very greedy and will take what we paid for to have them develop it and sell it to us at 10 times the price. Please don't sit here and distort how things are developed. I don't think any pharma company has funded the developed of their own drugs in decades.

Other issues also concerns paying for FDA approval of new drugs, while waiting for new drugs people still suffer in the hands of gov. bureaucracies, sitting on their ass, while they do their research "half ass" and pass the highest paying lobbyists of drug companies drugs first, the whole thing is politicized.

I think the thing Scott was trying to say is that the $1.7 Billion dollars his company payed to the Government spanned 10 years from 1987-1997 while columbia healthcare literally had 100.000 patients per day through 1000 facilities. Doing the math.. thats 36,500,000 patients per year or 365 million patients in 10 years which they over payed 1.7 Billion divided by 365 million patients means each patient overpayed... a staggering $4 and 65 cents.
This guy was NEVER charged criminally...

Actually that was more a representation of my frustration of the entire system, i.e., written very tongue in cheek.
While I do believe in capitalism, when you put insurance companies in the position their in regarding health care, they're naturally going to maximize profits. That is what companies do. And so when all they care about is raking in as many premiums as possible while shelling out as little coverage as possible, well, is it any surprise?
No easy answers here. None.
