@dogsarefab Its just the ending, in the play Posner is clearly mentally ill, lives alone and keeps a scrap book of the other boys, but in the film he becomes a head teacher that doesnt touch kids
@A7XisEPIC I didn't get on with the play at all, I walked out half way through I couldn't stick it. but I found the film so endearing :-) maybe I have no culture!!
Absolutely magical. A beautiful play, a beautiful film, wonderfully acted and directed. I can't tell you how many times I've read the play, and watched this film, and the ending brings a tear to my eye each time. Perfect
What makes me cry is the fact he's silent as if like a documentation of life. This is what happened to this lad. That's where the title of the originates from, history and documentation. The boys will essentially become part of history like may others. One might become a famous lawyer and be spoke about in years to come in front of law students.
It got me when James Gorden's character has become a drug taker and the teacher saying
'Are you all happy'
That's ironic, because all the time in school they tell you not to take drugs. Some would say that I'm worried that it could kill you and I want to help. But all some say, as long it makes you happy.
Hector died in the end, but he died a happy man. Knowing he had lived something that made the boys happy and got them into their next establishment. He's lost his wife and was lost without her, teaching the boys wasn't a job for him, it was his salvation and it came worth while.
I'm the same, I couldn't believe they killed off Lockwood! He and Scripps were my favourite characters. But then I read the play, which came first, and it said he became a magistrate like Crowther, so I was happy then. I suppose they killed him just to give a bit of variety? But still. :(
@RoseInPink they killed him because they needed a sad one, in the play Posner had a very sad ending which would have been too much for the film audiences, so Lockwood was the compromise, i think :D
I think it's amazing that by the end of the film, we mourn the death of, essentially, a paedophile. Yet out of the entire film, he is the one to tell them the best message, teach the boys the most and influence one of them to pass it on. "Pass it on boys!"
Yes what a WONDERFUL film... there are many other, help me if I'm missing some: "Dead Poets Society", "The Emperor's Club", and this "The History Boys", there are other two less known "Half Nelson" and that wonderful French one "The Class". Also F. Wiseman's "High School" documentary. 1st THE HISTORY BOYS, 2nd Wiseman’s Doc "HIGH SCHOOL", "THE CLASS", "DEAD POETS SOCIETY", "HALF NELSON", last "THE EMPEROR'S CLUB". LET ME KNOW OF OTHERS!!!
Cannot watch this without floods of tears, Lockwood and Posner, when she talks about those two; 1:53 for posner is when i start crying and 0:58/0:59 just when he turns his head, hurts my heart a little bit <3
"Pass the parcel. That's sometimes all you can do. Take it, feel it and pass it on. Not for me, not for you, but for someone, somewhere, one day. Pass it on, boys. That's the game I want you to learn. Pass it on." - A really emotional and hard hitting sentence Hector says during the film. :)
@Sopeydragon yeah as you say, its very honest and very hard hitting. A loverly message. Its nice to find a film thats not all doom and gloom :-D I wish I'd been born in the early 80's, such easier times, a lot less political correctness.
Iam not the least bit British, but I still loved every bit of tis film ... Without any doubt an excellent peice of art, story, acting, diction.....so on...
I was shocked when I saw a similar scene in a Twilight Zone episode (about a teacher ready to quit because he doesn't think he has made a difference).
yeah I think the whole scene is great, as you say it is hard hitting and very well made in terms of acting, scripts and camara work. It was an ending which had never been done before, I wish there were more orginal endings like this :-)
Yeah its a brilliant ending - I think because of course it originated from a famous and successful play the film will always just be seen as an adaption of that - and not a great film in its own right.
But its a fantastic ending. Poor ol' Lockwood!
- I love how he doesnt talk - that makes it especially more poignant
I love this film, the ending's great. Kind of sad, at least for some of them, but really different and powerful. I always felt especially bad for Lockwood...
I can't believe this is the only posting I could find of the ending of The History Boys and no one has commented on it in over a year. It is a really good film and I loved the unusual ending.
hey! thanks for the comment :-) Yeah to be honest i wasn't that bothered about watching the film again (although it was a good film) but the ending really capuvated me. I have never seen a film finished like this before and i thought it was an incredible emotional powered ending. Im just sorry the copy of the clip isn't better.
I know. If you get the chance, read the play, its really good, im doing it for my GCSE at the moment.

Does anyone know the brand of the satchel/school bag Dakin carries in the film? I've been looking for a proper one and like the look and size of his.
