My God. Now I'm big Mariah fan, and I'm not sure anyone has topped the versatlity and control of her whistle register, but these are the strongest, clearest whistles I've ever heard. And even better they fit her music far better than Mariah's. They actually come at the right points in the song musically, and actually feel essential to the music.

true her whistles seem clearer but it could just be the volume and because the songs have less production elements.
HOWEVER one thing that minnie and betty doesn't have over mariah is impeccable control and variety of the whistle register. All of her whistles sound somewhat the same. And Mariah sounds FARRR more distinct than betty and minnie, her tone is undeniably beautiful and clearly distinct.
@captainbryce1 No trying to compare singers, but I been asking around for notes and so far I got Mariah's highest: G#7. Minnie's: G7. Betty: F7. So far Mariah is winning, but I still have to check out other whistle singers.

I didn't know that Minnie hit a G7. Can you tell me which song that is in? Adam Lopez has hit F#7. But Georgia Brown still holds the record at G10, but the highest I've seen her do live is G#7 (same as Mariah's highest).

@LoboWarriorForever I like the vibrato too, but in my opinion, MC's vibrato is too agressive in some whistlers, it's beautiful, but it isn't the essence of vibrato,sometimes I feel like her vibrato isn't harmonic, and she need to vibrate it to harmonize. if you leave the vibrato from Mariah's whistles, it's flat. But she can do very good notes with this register!!
@LoboWarriorForever yeah, if you hear Mariah's notes over c#7, over that notes it's very hard to sustain or vibrate a whistle note, there you can hear Mariah's wistles with barely vibrato, they are rather flat, that's because she can't vibrate them, you can se the essence of the whistle, which isn't overshadowed by the agressive vibrato.
It's only my subjetive opinion, I don't want to tell that mariah's voice is flat, but that's my opinion

These girls use a technique called scream which all girls can physically do to reach those notes.Only they do it very good.Adam's technique is unknown to 99.99% of men.Its supposed to be a "superhuman feat".Its like shooting an arrow using feet instead of hands, and almost shooting as accurately.
@ASSHOLELA Many men can do whistle register. Its not like upper head voice which only women can access. Whistle register uses a compeletely different technique and completely different use of the vocal chords which both men and women can do. Its probably easier women because they ususally go higher than men anyway. Im a male baritone and i can whistle in the seventh octave
Correct. But you dont see any men on the street doing this anyway, so its quite uncommon. in a world with 3 billion men, even 1 in a million equates to 3,000; so many men can whistle. And its quite incredible ,or else Adam Lopez who was mostly in the 7th octave wouldnt draw gasps on guinness. I hit seventh octave notes in whistle as well, so we ought to thank God we have these rare and spectacular gifts.=)

hi captainbryce1! i just wanted to let u know i am happy someone finally recognizes talent in different singers. so many times on youtube people argue especially when it comes to mariah, whitney, beyonce... my personal favorie is mariah for a lot of different reasons but i'm always in awe when someone has a vocal gift and pre talent. thanks for being one of the rare open-minded people on youtube!! ;)
Actually, Mariah Carey would be another Betty Wright since Wright has been out for many more years than Carey. But either way, she doesn't do it through every song. I only highlighted parts of some of the songs where she does it. Most of her song back in the day she never did it. It's not annoying if it's done every once in a while and when you listen to the whole song. I was just trying to show that she could do it.

What many people don't realize is that singers like Betty Wright, Rachelle Ferrell, Minnie Riperton and many others are not singing their extreme notes in the whistle register. What they do is AMAZING and if they were to substitute with whistle notes, their ranges extend far beyond what we hear, but why would they. Rachelle for example has over 6 octaves in reality

Whitney has a whistle register in sixth and seventh octave too don't sleep. Saving my love for you Spain 4:24 she hits a note on top of the piano its on here. Also she has hit Bb6's and all types of whistles live. Most Black singers worth there crop can do whistle register. The difference Mariah popularized it because thats all she can really do with her voice. She lacked the versatility and talent vocally Whitney and many other soul singers have.

Yes I am aware of the history of black artists vs. white artists but in my opinion that is hardly relevant to Mariah Carey since she is in fact a "black" artist herself who has had mass success just like Whitney Houston- another black artist with much darker skin.
Whitney and Mariah had great voices, came from the same genre and had mass success among white and black audiences. They were both marketed as pop, adult contemporary and R&B singers that could appeal to a broad audience early in their careers. Perhaps their eurocentric looks help fuel their marketing potention, but again that is irrelevant in terms of talent (which nobody can deny). Neither of them are as great of singers as they used to be- for whatever reason, but they're icons nonetheless
As far as whistle singers goes, Mariah is in the top echelon as is (IMHO) Minnie Riperton, Betty Wright, Rachelle Ferrell, Shanice, Adam Lopez and a few others. They all sound different while doing it because they have different voices and different techniques, but they are all experts in it and talented in their own way. There is no right or wrong answer here. They each have a different tone, color and pitch and it's simply a matter of individual preference as far as "who does it best".
Well captainbryce1 as you so rightfully put it 'Neither of them are as great of singers as they used to be.' I see no reason for any contentious debate when my point is already proven re longevity and potency.
I'd just like to reiterate for everyone that this is a NOT a declaration of who is the best whistle singer. Betty, Mariah, Minnie and the others are all good in their own way and I love all of them. At most, this should be a FRIENDLY comparrison between their voices. That's why I put a question mark at the end of the title and not a period. I leave it open for everyone to decide themselves. The higher it goes it gets thinner with Betty thats how you know she using whistle instead of superhead. Her G7 is so false cord, but the lower like notes in 6 octave are superhead. I know the voice extremely well. Mariah uses all false cord baby. Her head voice sucks. She barely could do a full A5 in head. The rest is airy and using false cord.
Shanice is another one who can straight up go to B6 C7 in full superhead and Minnie too. Denice Williams and Jeane Carne as well. Mariah uses all false cord because she was not trained properly how to do it. Betty is truly trained along with Minnie, and Jeane Carne. Shanice has training as well. Betty technique is flawless especially when she is not hoarse.

I prefer Mariah's whistles to anyone else's because they have a nice tone to them. She can control their volume and power effortlessly, while other singers just sound screechy.

Yes yes...its good to see folks that aren't sleeping on Rachelle.She is the most versitile vocalist around,she literally mimicks instruments and you have nuts out there saying she makes animal sounds and that she has no accolades for her voice and this person thinks Mary J sings better.I almost busted a vein laughing so hard.Rachelle is the only artist i know that got signed to two record labels simultaneously...Capitol and Bluenote respectively!!!!!!!!

My God. Now I'm big Mariah fan, and I'm not sure anyone has topped the versatlity and control of her whistle register, but these are the strongest, clearest whistles I've ever heard. And even better they fit her music far better than Mariah's. They actually come at the right points in the song musically, and actually feel essential to the music.

true her whistles seem clearer but it could just be the volume and because the songs have less production elements.
HOWEVER one thing that minnie and betty doesn't have over mariah is impeccable control and variety of the whistle register. All of her whistles sound somewhat the same. And Mariah sounds FARRR more distinct than betty and minnie, her tone is undeniably beautiful and clearly distinct.

I didn't know that Minnie hit a G7. Can you tell me which song that is in? Adam Lopez has hit F#7. But Georgia Brown still holds the record at G10, but the highest I've seen her do live is G#7 (same as Mariah's highest).

@LoboWarriorForever Minnie can hit G7 in a live performance of Ruby Tuesday while she was the voice of Rotary Connection, I don't think Georgia is the queen of Whistle, because she do notes extremely high, not beautiful, I think her regular voice is beter XD, look, for me, the best whistler is Minnie's whistler, because it's the essence of that register, it manages to be beautiful even without vibrato, and she sustain several high notes during long time!!!

@LoboWarriorForever I like the vibrato too, but in my opinion, MC's vibrato is too agressive in some whistlers, it's beautiful, but it isn't the essence of vibrato,sometimes I feel like her vibrato isn't harmonic, and she need to vibrate it to harmonize. if you leave the vibrato from Mariah's whistles, it's flat. But she can do very good notes with this register!!

@LoboWarriorForever yeah, if you hear Mariah's notes over c#7, over that notes it's very hard to sustain or vibrate a whistle note, there you can hear Mariah's wistles with barely vibrato, they are rather flat, that's because she can't vibrate them, you can se the essence of the whistle, which isn't overshadowed by the agressive vibrato.
It's only my subjetive opinion, I don't want to tell that mariah's voice is flat, but that's my opinion

@LoboWarriorForever yeah, it was hard to me to find a Live version from "I want to know what love is without playback in the high chest notes (it's more than evident if you hear the change of texture) and in whistle, in a live from 2009 she lip-sincing all the song!!,but I foud it, she hit Eb7 during exactly 2 secs. and the rest of the notes are vibrated, but down c#7 and some random...
There's got to be away, I couldn't find Live performance, and without that...I can judge nothing

In both videos, mariah didn't vibrate notes over C#7, they sound flat, and you must know that, after 2009 Mariah LIP-SYNCH THE WHISTLES.

These girls use a technique called scream which all girls can physically do to reach those notes.Only they do it very good.Adam's technique is unknown to 99.99% of men.Its supposed to be a "superhuman feat".Its like shooting an arrow using feet instead of hands, and almost shooting as accurately.

Whistle register uses a compeletely different technique and completely different use of the vocal chords which both men and women can do. Its probably easier women because they ususally go higher than men anyway. Im a male baritone and i can whistle in the seventh octave

Correct. But you dont see any men on the street doing this anyway, so its quite uncommon. in a world with 3 billion men, even 1 in a million equates to 3,000; so many men can whistle. And its quite incredible ,or else Adam Lopez who was mostly in the 7th octave wouldnt draw gasps on guinness. I hit seventh octave notes in whistle as well, so we ought to thank God we have these rare and spectacular gifts.=)

Actually, Mariah Carey would be another Betty Wright since Wright has been out for many more years than Carey. But either way, she doesn't do it through every song. I only highlighted parts of some of the songs where she does it. Most of her song back in the day she never did it. What many people don't realize is that singers like Betty Wright, Rachelle Ferrell, Minnie Riperton and many others are not singing their extreme notes in the whistle register. What they do is AMAZING and if they were to substitute with whistle notes, their ranges extend far beyond what we hear, but why would they. Rachelle for example has over 6 octaves in reality

Also she has hit Bb6's and all types of whistles live. Most Black singers worth there crop can do whistle register. Betty Wright, Shanice Wilson, Jean Carne ARE BLACK SOUL singers! MC is a pop singer and was marketed for that. Because of her 'white' it wasn't difficult selling her to mainstream audience. If you say that, then you'll have to agree that Beyonce's and Whitney's "whiteness" always help sell them too, for godsake Whitney's hair was blonde in "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and Beyonce constantly wears blonde. BTW, Mariah is also Black you can't dismiss that, she has to go through her own unique racism as a Bi-racial person, just as Obama.

I at no time denied MC's black heritage but many persons unknowingly thought she was white; even articles were published stating the white girl with the black 'voice'! In addition I read where this black British singer was told by executive that it's easier selling white artists singing Black music; the Elvis Presley scenario! I'm also aware that Clive weaned a lot of Whitney's blackness on her records to have a wider appeal. Beyonce's isnt' about voice, it's about sexiness, spotlight & drama...

Just to let you know, I'm squashing all of this race talk right now. Mariah is mixed (black and white). Everyone knows that and she's always said that. She's a great pop AND R&B singer and she is an icon. Whatever got her there, you can't deny her talent nor can anyone deny Betty, Shanice, Whitney and the others (Beyonce included). They are/were all great in their own way and race has nothing to do with it. Everyone has their own personal favorites and let's just leave it at that shall we!

captainbryce1, with all due respect I have no contention with people's race. gauss11 is the one who brought up the issue of race. My opinions re White vs Black artists are HISTORICALLY verified. SO yes I am aware that MC is mixed and that is fine by me. I am however affronted when fanatics go about condemning others due to race or popularity WHEN there is strong arguments that speak otherwise. As mentioned all have talents BUT some have LONGEVITY and POTENCY! Time will continue to tell.

My response wasn't necessarily directed at YOU specifically, but to everyone in general. I'll not have this turned into a racial debate. Yes I am aware of the history of black artists vs. white artists but in my opinion that is hardly relevant to Mariah Carey since she is in fact a "black" artist herself who has had mass success just like Whitney Houston- another black artist with much darker skin.

Whitney and Mariah had great voices, came from the same genre and had mass success among white and black audiences. They were both marketed as pop, adult contemporary and R&B singers that could appeal to a broad audience early in their careers. Perhaps their eurocentric looks help fuel their marketing potention, but again that is irrelevant in terms of talent (which nobody can deny). Neither of them are as great of singers as they used to be- for whatever reason, but they're icons nonetheless

As far as whistle singers goes, Mariah is in the top echelon as is (IMHO) Minnie Riperton, Betty Wright, Rachelle Ferrell, Shanice, Adam Lopez and a few others. They all sound different while doing it because they have different voices and different techniques, but they are all experts in it and talented in their own way. There is no right or wrong answer here. They each have a different tone, color and pitch and it's simply a matter of individual preference as far as "who does it best".

I'd just like to reiterate for everyone that this is a NOT a declaration of who is the best whistle singer. Betty, Mariah, Minnie and the others are all good in their own way and I love all of them. At most, this should be a FRIENDLY comparrison between their voices. That's why I put a question mark at the end of the title and not a period. I leave it open for everyone to decide themselves. I'm just trying to get Betty Wright's voice out there because some younger people don't know her.

Betty in her 20's and 30's could hit notes you could not hear in her whistle register. Most of Betty notes are in superhead up to B6, and then its whistle after. Mariah is all whistle, and she does not have good head tones. Betty does it right................

you're wrong.. Mariah can access Whistle register through headvoice too.. Check out "I wanna feeeeeel haaaaaaah" in her I want to know what love is. Also in her O holy night Live..
I don't believe betty can go as high as B6 using headvoice. Nobody can.. even Georgia can't

Yes she can it is all superhead at least to B6 the rest is false cord. Betty even hit C7 in superhead so what your talking about. The higher it goes it gets thinner with Betty thats how you know she using whistle instead of superhead. Her G7 is so false cord, but the lower like notes in 6 octave are superhead. I know the voice extremely well. Mariah uses all false cord baby. Her head voice sucks. She barely could do a full A5 in head. The rest is airy and using false cord.

Shanice is another one who can straight up go to B6 C7 in full superhead and Minnie too. Denice Williams and Jeane Carne as well. Mariah uses all false cord because she was not trained properly how to do it. Betty is truly trained along with Minnie, and Jeane Carne. Shanice has training as well. Betty technique is flawless especially when she is not hoarse.

Sorry to tell you Mariah only became mainstream because the record labels tried to mold her as the very light skin version of supposed Whitney. Her record label tried there hardest to mold Mariah like Whitney but honey she is no where near her vocally not now or ever. There are plenty of Black singers that could send MC home in her prime and now Whitney included!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I prefer Mariah's whistles to anyone else's because they have a nice tone to them. She can control their volume and power effortlessly, while other singers just sound screechy.
