Learn to drive with a manual if at all possible, as someone else mentioned. Going from manual to automatic is trivial, the other way around is not.

I don't know how difficult the tests are in the US, so other than spending alot of time studying and practicing: Stay calm, take your time, use common sense. (Learn where your common sense does not apply).

I hit my rock bottom at 17. and rock bottom SUCKS, but something will happen when you're down there that will make you see things in a different way, and you're on your way back up! I'm now 20 and back at the top! So please keep strong! Find someone who you can trust (a teacher, distant relative, or an organization around you) and confide in them. I just got my G1 but I had to go do it over 2 days because they ran outa time the first day >:I We're not allowed to smile either, and the guy wouldn't show me my picture, so it's a mystery as to whether I look angry, bewildered, or intimidated, but it's deff one of the three

Kate, I beg you, please when you start driving always drive 5 over the posted speed limit unless there are seriously extenuating circumstances to prevent you from doing so. For example in California the only things that should prevent you from that is torrential downpour like there was a few weeks ago or people in front of you. It's extremely unlikely that you will get pulled over and because people who don't drive well can seriously ruin someone's day. Please, don't pointlessly piss people off.

A learning to drive tip: consider learning in a car with a manual transmission if you can. That may be harder in the US, as the vast majority of cars are automatic, however, returning to the UK, where the situation is reversed, only knowing how to drive an automatic will be fairly limiting.

A manual car driver can, with pretty much no effort swap to driving an automatic, while a manual driver will generally have a bit of a learning curve (and another driving test - in the UK at least).

1. LISTEN to the examiner and notice EVERYTHING on the driver course. (I failed once because I forgot to notice a stop sign on the course.)

2. I wasn't allowed to smile for my drivers license because they can't see the pupils of my eyes if I smile. (That is one feature of your face they must be able to notice.) So I widened my eyes instead.
