People don't know how great Walton was before injuries did him in. In his third season he led the Blazers to a championship upset over the 76ers despite him being the only star on the team. Before that his team swept the Lakers with Kareem. He was also leader in rebounds and blocks and was the best passing big man of his day. It took Olajuwon 10 years to win a title in a watered-down league.
Michael Jordan? The Rockets only faced the Bulls twice in a regular season and never met in the Finals. His only real rival in the West was David Robinson and they only met once in the playoffs.
There were 30 teams, most of whom had stiffs at the center position. Who were all the amazing centers? Felton Spencer? Rik Smits? Stacey King? Luc Longley? Shawn Bradley? Georghe Muresan? Skills at the center were sacrificed because the 90s was more about guards and forwards. Yes there were a handful of great centers, but they rarely faced competent rivals on a nightly basis and often played scrubs. Their "dominance" is somewhat inflated in that regard.
@bordertown C'mon there have always been a lot of stiffs at the C position. The 70's had some guys (Walton, Malone, Kareem, Lanier, and Gilmore mainly). There were other good ones who were probably called C's, but they were 4's masquerading as 5's (Wes Unseld, Dave Cowens- both short). Don't mention Rik Smits by the way because he was very good. The other guys were just big dudes, but there was plenty of that back in the day too.
@kazdamanify Not true. The Rockets weren't very good before Jordan retired. The west was down at that time. It took awhile for Houston to rebuild from the drug stuff with the twin towers team (and Sampson's injuries). Houston peaked between 93-95. I thought they might play the Bulls in 93, but Suns were just too good. Bulls never met Houston in the finals, so how can you say Jordan was why he never got rings?
You weren't around when he beasting it in college and beasting even more as a newcomer in the league. It's true that injuries cut him short, but if you knew how good he was when he was healthy you wouldn't be saying that. Not many other centers handled the ball or moved the ball better than him. John Wooden, who coached both Walton and Kareem, said Bill was the superior of the two. Given that, why shouldn't he be in this commercial with these other guys?
@bordertown Watered-down? Bill Walton won in the worst era of NBA basketball of all time, when games were on tape-delay and teams were ready to go out of business! The post-merger, late 70's were terrible! There was unprecedented parity with guys like Erving scattering around the NBA after the merger. Look at the numbers. In those years the best teams won 50-53 games. It was not a major upset when Portland won. Just as good as Philly and LA. Guy named Maurice Lucas on his team...good.
@bordertown And the NBA in the early 90's was WAY better than in late 70's. Olajuwon, Shaq, Robinson, and Ewing were all better than Walton, and all still at peak performance when Olajuwon won 2 rings. Walton was great. 2nd best C in late 70's when healthy, but has no business in the hall of fame, and doesn't compare to Olajuwon, Shaq, Robinson, Ewing, Kareem, Chamberlain, or Russell. Not close.
In his career Walton won championships in both NCAA and NBA, three time college player of the year, first team honors in both NCAA and NBA, MVP, Finals MVP, sixth man award, NBA all star, all defensive team, etc. Being in the hall of fame is all about your contributions and achievements in the sport, not just NBA. When you add up what Walton accomplished in his few years of playing how could he not be in the hall of fame? If Wes Unseld and Gail Goodrich made it why not Bill?
Hakeem Olajuwon hadn't even won a title yet and would've made no sense in this commercial as the lineup is of legendary Centers, not guys that were currently playing...
hakeem was already great in '93 but is like doing the same commercial today and put dwight howard instead of patrick ewing for example... by the way walton is really underrated
@AllenGarnettPierce How many of Walton's games did you watch? BW was a utter force. Very very few centers ever, can destroy an offense the way he could. Like four or five
How is hakeem underrated? most people have him in their top 10 centers, a lot of guys have him in their top 5 all time
Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain are NBA and Basketball legends. But they couldn't have stopped a prime Olajuwon. No one could have and even Shaq says so. He is the most underrated center in the NBA history and it is not fair. When comparing players and not eras, you should leave aside stats and awards and look at the players abilities and weak points. Shaq would have been the same in any era. Wilt was a Robinson. Russell's the best post defender. Hakeem was the most skilled & unstoppable.
if y'all are wondering why Walton is in this commercial, because i'm assuming he wore Reebok shoes back in the day. All these guys were probably sponsors of Reebok.
Russell I do believe was the first guy to sign a shoe sponsor contract. They were Bristols & he spent months with their design team getting a shoe that would stand up more than 2 or 3 games.
Chamberlain wore Converse, so did Walton.
It was actually Kareem not mj who started the NBA shoe craze, he wore adidas
now if you mean at the time of the commercial they all sponsored reebok? undoubtedly. Can't imagine them competing against their own shoe company
I've never heard anybody ever in all my years of playing, watching and coaching basketball say Wilt Chamberlain sucked! Some people just get more stupid as there lives move on! And I'd take Hakeem over all those guys, well maybe not Wilt.lol
@Hamishknicks77 Hakeem was still in the league stupid and hadnt even won a championship yet. All the centers here had won championships and were considered the 4 best who had ever played by this point minus Moses Malone.
@EnoughSaidInc tired of all the hakeem talk from the younger crowd. Hakeen was not nearly as dominating as Wilt,Jabbar, or Russell. And save me the argument that they played weak compettion. I judge players by how they dominated their era. They all dominated more then he did. Kareen got selected all NBA over Hakeem when Jabbar was about 40 years old. He led his team to a NBA title in 7 games over a weak Knick team. Big deal.
@mediabench wilt did not suck. ok dont give you stats cool. well he was the first seven footer in basketball. he revolutionized the game with his incredible hook shot (you thought kareem invented that?) and well he just was nasty with his playing style.
wilt was a bottomless hole of usage with the basketball, you couldnt win big games with him in anything less than ideal situations. he simply didn't understand the concept of team, and that's why I would take olajuwon, russell, or kareem over him easily. Wilt lived for the regular season and shyed away from big moments.
@327372 He was still in the league at this point, plus it was 1993 so he hadn't won his 2 championships yet, if they did a remake of this for some center going into the league in a year or two, him and shaq would have to be there.
@Cooley96 If the dude's garbage, how come he has 26,946 career total points, 13,747 career total rebounds, 3,830 career total blocks, 1 MVP award 2 DPoY awards, 2 Finals MVPs, 1 Olympic Gold Medal and 2 more Championship Rings than your Spudd Webb? ...Yeah, thought so. ^^
@monseratto 26k points thats nothin, HES A BIGG ASS CENTER PLAYING AGAINST 6 FOOT DUDES! he was only lucky enough to get some rings because Michael Jordan had left the league. spudd webb was more athletic than hakeem on steroids. 1mvp? Big whoop, big news akeem barely even contributed to the Olympic team they had way better players they only beat the Knicks and magic that must have been hard right? A 18 year career and 2 rings? WOW
@Cooley96 u sed...... "26k points thats nothin, HES A BIGG ASS CENTER PLAYING AGAINST 6 FOOT DUDES! he was only lucky enough to get some rings because Michael Jordan had left the league."
I forgot 90s NBA was nothin but 6 FOOT DUDES. Must have happened the day Jordan left, the whole league turned into 6 FOOT DUDES
@ZipperZappleZ tf? I don't know wtf your even gettin at. I said he won rings because he had size over the people he played against (the 6 foot dudes) and because Jordan wasn't in the league tp assist his team in beating the rockets. I don't know wtf your saying or what your trying to say nor do I even care.
This is just me, but if I can start a team around one center in his prime.... its Shaq. No way can Russell, Wilt, or Kareem guard shaq in the post with those lanky bodies. Shaq would ragdoll them just like he did to Duncan and Robinson through the early 2000's.
@gio05 ,Wilt was between 275 and 315 of upperbody. No player could ragdoll Wilt Chamberlain. Wilt Chamberlain was strong. Wilt once disolcated a 6'6 230lb forward's shoulder by blocking his dunk and sending him tot he floor
@gio05 lol Bill Russell would foul Shaq out every single game they played for 10 years in a row. Kareem would score 30 ppg against Shaq just like he did against every other player in the game. Whenever his coach asked him, Chamberlain would score at will on Shaq , just like anyone else.
Shaq's right there with those guys all right, but he's not better than any of them.
@musikaNeues Russell fouling out Shaq? Really?? Russell was known for his Defense not his offense... Shaq dominated the likes of Mutombo, Sabonis, Duncan, Robinson, Garnett, Yao... Wilt played against Russell and he already had him by about 3 or 4 inches in height, my point being that if you put things in perspective, not that impresive to average 50 pts in a season when there was no three second rules nor any opponent other than Russell to tangle with you. Wilt was way ahead of his time
@musikaNeues Wilt's was an amazing player, dont get me wrong. But there's a reason nobody has ever scored 100 in a game since... not even the great Kareem scored that much in a game. The leage is too good and there are too many rules in the paint for you to get 100 in a game
@gio05 The reason is because there's never been a guy with that total package.
If the NBA is so hard now how come Kobe Bryant just passed the highest scoring guard of that era? Kobe played the same number of years as Oscar. If the league is so hard now how come he got all those points & passed Oscar?
Scoring was inflated in the 60s & 70s, sure. But it was because everyone on the team was expected to score.
Google 1962 nba season basketball reference & go thru some seasons you'll see fact
1. guards, not centers, are taller. There's more 7 footers today, but there's 30 teams not 10. Duh.
2. All players since '85 (like Howard who was 6'9 on draft day but magically grew 2 inches when he put on a NBA jersey) are measured in shoes. Before that they were measured in bare feet.
Today's players aren't taller, they just lie about their height.
@musikaNeues there was 8 teams and now theres 30 so that should be enough to tell u wilt wouldnt be the same today as he was back then ontop of that wilt wasnt a team player when he went on the lakers he called his coach the worst coach ever and when he was avging 50 he made sure he got his 50 before he did anything else if you look at players like shaq avged about 23ish pts a game for his career he could get 50 or at least 40 everygame this era all u have to do is ignore open shooters
@kixmgc Mulhaney may have BEEN the worst coach ever. Wilt wasn't the only Laker calling him out, so was West & Baylor.
Do Magic & MJ get a pass? THEY got THEIR coaches fired, too.
The season he averaged 50, his coach Dick McGuire made it team strategy to cut & weave until Chamberlain was only double teamed. If they could get the ball in to him, they did.
Chamberlain was horribly embarassed by all the shots he was taking, & told his teammates & the press.
@kixmgc Who knows? Trying to evaluate players from youtube highlight clips is stupid. Players ain't got any better since 1965, although strategies, training, & medicine have.
Only guy I've seen since who can even compare in the post with Wilt was Shaq. But Shaq was never as fast, & never had an outside game - Chamberlain did.
Funny, people talk about MJ as a one-time event in history - & he was. But when Chamberlain gets brought up, fools who never saw him iimmediately start bashing his game
@musikaNeues im not going off youtube highlights im going off the fact that no one drops 50 points a game for a season nowadays and noone saw wilt really aside from the people that were at the games
@kixmgc there's currently nobody that could do it. It could be done in today's league.
But the teams would have to speed up the pace an incredible amount. The strategy these days is to burn off all 24 seconds. Look at 2011 Finals - Heat passed as many as 7 & 8 times before taking a last second shot. NBA was always a league to take the first open look until about 2003.
I watched the last half of Wilt's career, a lot of it televised but it was local TV.
@musikaNeues no it cant be done today by anyone because after u get it one game and maybe 2 then people know how to defend you and they do it unless u have an unlimited arsenal and mastered everymove you cant do it
@kixmgc gosh it's amazing how much smarter people are today than they were in 1960.
We've seen them go from stupid morons who could never understand that the same play was working over and over - to geniuses that can stop any player just by watching him for one shot sequence.
Of course Chamberlain's skills were Shaq-like, right? 2 moves - a dunk, and an 8 foot push shot.
@musikaNeues if chamberlain and russell werent taller than majority of the players then how are they averaging over 20 rebounds for their careers you can be the worlds greatest rebounder but theres no way u can get 20 without having some sort of major advantage over your opponent and your making it seem like im saying chamberlain sucks im not im saying he wouldnt ever drop 50 for a season this time around nor would he have those 40+ rebound games or average 20+ for his career
@kixmgc Rebounds & height go together... but only to a point. As Russell pointed out 50 years ago - Barkley Rodman & Love have all said it - 75% of all rebounds are taken BELOW THE RIM. It's desire & skill, not height, that gets rebounds.
If I'm not mistaken, Mutumbo & D Rob are the only 7 footers in the last 30 years to lead the NBA in rebounds. Add in Kareem once, & you've got the entire collection (except Wilt).
It's not likely that they'd get 23 rpg in today's slow game.
@musikaNeues 20 once in a while is ok but avging 20 for your career not gona happen niether is getting 40+ a few times during itkevin love doesnt average 20 he just gets 20 here and there
@kixmgc dude. Kevin Love is a fine NBA player - not one of the all-time greats (at least, so far).
If Rodman or Barkley were playing today they'd avg 18, if Chamberlain were playing he'd avg 18. Any of em could get a 20 season. The problem is the pace of the game is SO SLOW there aren't rebounds to be had.
There's no handchecking in the NBA. It's appalling but there's no elite scorers. If Kobe 8 was in right now he'd would be up over 35 ppg. Bernard King, MJ, Wilt, McAdoo.
@kixmgc yes there is elite scorers...carmelo...dirk...kobe a few years ago but idk why that matters were talkin about wilt chamberlain and the fact that he wouldnt be the same if he played in the nba today
@kixmgc That's a good indication that scoring leaders score the same amount every year, regardless of era.
In fact, it's FACT.
Now look carefully at 1960-64 season leaders. Those guys scored the same as any other season in history, about 28 to 31 ppg. It was no different then. The best scorers then put up the same numbers as ANY year, any ERA, for the LAST HALF CENTURY.
@kixmgc Carmelo has NEVER been at that level. He's never been higher than 5th on the scoring list, even at his ball-hoggingest in Denver with one of the Great point guards dishing to him & I mean Chauncey.
Look man, the Dipper was the whole package. People just refuse to believe he was that good, because they never saw him. They make up stories to belittle his athleticism & skills because they can't understand.
The man was a geological event, like a 1,000 year earthquake and typhoon. Truly.
@musikaNeues im not comparing him to wilt im saying carmelo is a greast scorer today you dont have to be in the top 5 to be a great scorer you have to score when it matters, clutch shots, playoffs ect. look at kevin durant he led the league this season theres no way hes the best scorer in the nba he just scored the most points theres a difference he got guarded by jason kidd and jason kidd is a great defender but when your close to 7 foot you should be able to score over him
@kixmgc After watching ball for 40+ years I really think the NBA goes through stages of greatness, and weakness. It's like watching Ali-Frazier & then watching Tyson. I mean, he was a great boxer, but who'd he fight? He lived in a barren wasteland of boxers.
NBA is same way. There was 2 or 3 years in the 80s when there really was only 2 great teams.. in the 90s the Bulls were so stacked it wasn't a competition, it was shooting ducks in a barrel.
@kixmgc Today's NBA is like 70s, teams are running spreads. Simply because there IS no Wilt, Magic, Bird or Jordan. Kobe8 & K Malone were elite. Shaq was elite. There is not one player at that level today, sorry. Certainly not KD or Melo.
LBJ maybe has established himself to that level. We will find out over next few years when Heat get quality paint players. Griffin, Love? Possible future
Over time, I predict Carmelo will be a Kiki or a Marques - top player of his day, but not alltime elite.
Hakeem wasn't there bcuz he is on a whole new level

wilt was a bottomless hole of usage with the basketball, you couldnt win big games with him in anything less than ideal situations. he simply didn't understand the concept of team, and that's why I would take olajuwon, russell, or kareem over him easily. Wilt lived for the regular season and shyed away from big moments.
GotAnEyedea 7 months ago
@GotAnEyedea like in the 66 ECF against the Celtics?
In the last 2 minutes, Wilt Chamberlain scored 10 points, and shut down every single Celtic shot.
That's right, the last 2 minutes of game 7, the famous Havlicek stole the ball game, the score was
Wilt Chamberlain 10
Boston Celtics 0
You call that choking?
Name one clutch free throw, ever, that Wilt missed. Boston beat Philly because they had a HoF at every position.
Read up - just don't bother with Bill Simmons.

@GotAnEyedea game 2 bucks- lakers 72. Game 3, Wilt blocks 4 in a row & drops 4 pts, LA wins by 3.
game 4 68 ECF Hal Greer pulls a hamstring, with Cunningham out with broken arm, Chamberlain scores 8 points in a row last 3 minutes to beat Boston.
G1 67 ECF Wilt's line was 24 points, 32 rebounds, 13 assists and blocked 12 shots
Game 3 67 ECF Wilt makes free throw with :40 left - followed by his rebound beats Boston
There's plenty more

This is just me, but if I can start a team around one center in his prime.... its Shaq. No way can Russell, Wilt, or Kareem guard shaq in the post with those lanky bodies. Shaq would ragdoll them just like he did to Duncan and Robinson through the early 2000's.
gio05 8 months ago 2
@gio05 Wilt, Lanky? the dude benched 450 and was a record holder in shotput
PowerSprinter 8 months ago
@gio05 ,Wilt was between 275 and 315 of upperbody. No player could ragdoll Wilt Chamberlain. Wilt Chamberlain was strong. Wilt once disolcated a 6'6 230lb forward's shoulder by blocking his dunk and sending him tot he floor
tuzwol 8 months ago
@gio05 lol Bill Russell would foul Shaq out every single game they played for 10 years in a row. Kareem would score 30 ppg against Shaq just like he did against every other player in the game. Whenever his coach asked him, Chamberlain would score at will on Shaq , just like anyone else.
Shaq's right there with those guys all right, but he's not better than any of them.
musikaNeues 8 months ago
@musikaNeues Russell fouling out Shaq? Really?? Russell was known for his Defense not his offense... Shaq dominated the likes of Mutombo, Sabonis, Duncan, Robinson, Garnett, Yao... Wilt played against Russell and he already had him by about 3 or 4 inches in height, my point being that if you put things in perspective, not that impresive to average 50 pts in a season when there was no three second rules nor any opponent other than Russell to tangle with you. Wilt was way ahead of his time
gio05 8 months ago
@gio05 yes, Russell fouling out Shaq. They called charges in every NBA era except one.
If you put things in perspective it's crazy impressive to score 50 pts in a season.
Scoring leader numbers are identical in every era. Every year, they score 28-35 ppg to lead the league.
1962 Points Per Game
1. Wilt Chamberlain*-PHW 50.4
2. Walt Bellamy*-CHP 31.6
3. Bob Pettit*-STL 31.1
4. Jerry West*-LAL 30.8
5. Oscar Robertson*-CIN 30.8
Same as any year, ever, if you take Wilt out of the picture
musikaNeues 8 months ago
@musikaNeues Wilt's was an amazing player, dont get me wrong. But there's a reason nobody has ever scored 100 in a game since... not even the great Kareem scored that much in a game. The leage is too good and there are too many rules in the paint for you to get 100 in a game
gio05 8 months ago
@gio05 The reason is because there's never been a guy with that total package.
If the NBA is so hard now how come Kobe Bryant just passed the highest scoring guard of that era? Kobe played the same number of years as Oscar. If the league is so hard now how come he got all those points & passed Oscar?
Scoring was inflated in the 60s & 70s, sure. But it was because everyone on the team was expected to score.
Google 1962 nba season basketball reference & go thru some seasons you'll see fact
musikaNeues 8 months ago
@musikaNeues Well I still say an "in his prime" Shaquille O'neal would beat Wilt Chamberlain in a straight up, low post 1 on 1 game.
gio05 8 months ago
@gio05 my view it would depend entirely on what era they played in.
If they played 1960 to 1987, or 2003 to now, Chamberlain would completely school him. Wilt was an entirely more skilled basketball player.
If they played in the foul-free era 1988-2002, it'd be close - Shaq wouldn't foul out in his first 6 possessions.
Can't say Shaq had a better post game, he had to have spent years watching film of Chamberlain.
I never saw a single move in Shaq's entire career that Wilt didn't make
musikaNeues 8 months ago
@musikaNeues wilt was just taller thaqn everyone thats why he was better
kixmgc 8 months ago
@kixmgc uh huh.
60s league average height 6'6"
90s league average height 6'7"
Change in average is due to 2 things.
1. guards, not centers, are taller.
Didn't know that did ya?
musikaNeues 8 months ago
@musikaNeues there was 8 teams and now theres 30 so that should be enough to tell u wilt wouldnt be the same today as he was back then ontop of that wilt wasnt a team player when he went on the lakers he called his coach the worst coach ever and when he was avging 50 he made sure he got his 50 before he did anything else if you look at players like shaq avged about 23ish pts a game for his career he could get 50 or at least 40 everygame this era all u have to do is ignore open shooters
kixmgc 8 months ago
@kixmgc Mulhaney may have BEEN the worst coach ever. Wilt wasn't the only Laker calling him out, so was West & Baylor.
Do Magic & MJ get a pass? THEY got THEIR coaches fired, too.
The season he averaged 50, his coach Dick McGuire made it team strategy to cut & weave until Chamberlain was only double teamed. If they could get the ball in to him, they did.
Chamberlain was horribly embarassed by all the shots he was taking, & told his teammates & the press.
Learn the facts not the myths.
musikaNeues 8 months ago
@musikaNeues if he played from the 90s-today he wouldnt be as good simple as that really
kixmgc 8 months ago
@kixmgc Who knows? Trying to evaluate players from youtube highlight clips is stupid. Players ain't got any better since 1965, although strategies, training, & medicine have.
Only guy I've seen since who can even compare in the post with Wilt was Shaq. But Shaq was never as fast, & never had an outside game - Chamberlain did.
Funny, people talk about MJ as a one-time event in history - & he was. But when Chamberlain gets brought up, fools who never saw him iimmediately start bashing his game
musikaNeues 8 months ago
@musikaNeues im not going off youtube highlights im going off the fact that no one drops 50 points a game for a season nowadays and noone saw wilt really aside from the people that were at the games
kixmgc 8 months ago
@kixmgc there's currently nobody that could do it. It could be done in today's league.
But the teams would have to speed up the pace an incredible amount. The strategy these days is to burn off all 24 seconds. Look at 2011 Finals - Heat passed as many as 7 & 8 times before taking a last second shot. NBA was always a league to take the first open look until about 2003.
I watched the last half of Wilt's career, a lot of it televised but it was local TV.
Lotsa guys that post on here saw him.
musikaNeues 8 months ago
@musikaNeues no it cant be done today by anyone because after u get it one game and maybe 2 then people know how to defend you and they do it unless u have an unlimited arsenal and mastered everymove you cant do it
kixmgc 8 months ago
@kixmgc gosh it's amazing how much smarter people are today than they were in 1960.
We've seen them go from stupid morons who could never understand that the same play was working over and over - to geniuses that can stop any player just by watching him for one shot sequence.
Of course Chamberlain's skills were Shaq-like, right? 2 moves - a dunk, and an 8 foot push shot.
Oh wait no he wasn't
musikaNeues 8 months ago
@kixmgc with no hand checks in today 's game, there's a lot of guys that could throw down torrential numbers not just Chamberlain & MJ
They'd just throw down the most because they are the two players so far better than anyone else who's ever played.
musikaNeues 8 months ago
@musikaNeues if chamberlain and russell werent taller than majority of the players then how are they averaging over 20 rebounds for their careers you can be the worlds greatest rebounder but theres no way u can get 20 without having some sort of major advantage over your opponent and your making it seem like im saying chamberlain sucks im not im saying he wouldnt ever drop 50 for a season this time around nor would he have those 40+ rebound games or average 20+ for his career
kixmgc 8 months ago
@kixmgc Rebounds & height go together... but only to a point. As Russell pointed out 50 years ago - Barkley Rodman & Love have all said it - 75% of all rebounds are taken BELOW THE RIM. It's desire & skill, not height, that gets rebounds.
If I'm not mistaken, Mutumbo & D Rob are the only 7 footers in the last 30 years to lead the NBA in rebounds. Add in Kareem once, & you've got the entire collection (except Wilt).
It's not likely that they'd get 23 rpg in today's slow game.
More like 18.
musikaNeues 8 months ago
@kixmgc How did Kevin Love get all those 20s this season? How'd he get a 30 30 game? He's got no "major advantage" over his opponents.
He's got desire, and skill.
Like 6''7" Ben Wallace, 6'6" Sir Charles, 6'8" Rodman... all short league leaders in rebounding.
They got desire, and skill.
musikaNeues 8 months ago
@musikaNeues 20 once in a while is ok but avging 20 for your career not gona happen niether is getting 40+ a few times during itkevin love doesnt average 20 he just gets 20 here and there
kixmgc 8 months ago
@kixmgc dude. Kevin Love is a fine NBA player - not one of the all-time greats (at least, so far).
If Rodman or Barkley were playing today they'd avg 18, if Chamberlain were playing he'd avg 18. Any of em could get a 20 season. The problem is the pace of the game is SO SLOW there aren't rebounds to be had.
There's no handchecking in the NBA. It's appalling but there's no elite scorers. If Kobe 8 was in right now he'd would be up over 35 ppg. Bernard King, MJ, Wilt, McAdoo.
But there will be!
musikaNeues 8 months ago
@kixmgc yes there is elite scorers...carmelo...dirk...kobe a few years ago but idk why that matters were talkin about wilt chamberlain and the fact that he wouldnt be the same if he played in the nba today
kixmgc 8 months ago
@kixmgc carmelo ......... lol ok
musikaNeues 8 months ago
@musikaNeues carmelo isnt a good scorer? you look foolish saying that
kixmgc 8 months ago
@kixmgc ok. Google nba season 2000 & then choose the basketball reference website.
You can go previous season, or next season.... go through each season & look at the league leaders. It's at the bottom left of the page.
You will find, year in and year out, the league leaders scored from 25 to 35 ppg each season.
1960, 1975, 1986, 1997, 2005... Every year for 50 years.
....
musikaNeues 7 months ago
@kixmgc That's a good indication that scoring leaders score the same amount every year, regardless of era.
In fact, it's FACT.
Now look carefully at 1960-64 season leaders. Those guys scored the same as any other season in history, about 28 to 31 ppg. It was no different then. The best scorers then put up the same numbers as ANY year, any ERA, for the LAST HALF CENTURY.
Only 2 guys have ever gone above that level.
MJ in '87, with 37, & Wilt,
with seasons of 37.6, 38.4, 50.4, 44.8, & 36.9
musikaNeues 7 months ago
@kixmgc Carmelo has NEVER been at that level. He's never been higher than 5th on the scoring list, even at his ball-hoggingest in Denver with one of the Great point guards dishing to him & I mean Chauncey.
Look man, the Dipper was the whole package. People just refuse to believe he was that good, because they never saw him. They make up stories to belittle his athleticism & skills because they can't understand.
The man was a geological event, like a 1,000 year earthquake and typhoon. Truly.
musikaNeues 7 months ago
@musikaNeues im not comparing him to wilt im saying carmelo is a greast scorer today you dont have to be in the top 5 to be a great scorer you have to score when it matters, clutch shots, playoffs ect. look at kevin durant he led the league this season theres no way hes the best scorer in the nba he just scored the most points theres a difference he got guarded by jason kidd and jason kidd is a great defender but when your close to 7 foot you should be able to score over him
kixmgc 7 months ago
@kixmgc After watching ball for 40+ years I really think the NBA goes through stages of greatness, and weakness. It's like watching Ali-Frazier & then watching Tyson. I mean, he was a great boxer, but who'd he fight? He lived in a barren wasteland of boxers.
NBA is same way. There was 2 or 3 years in the 80s when there really was only 2 great teams.. in the 90s the Bulls were so stacked it wasn't a competition, it was shooting ducks in a barrel.
Today is comparable to 70s - team play
musikaNeues 7 months ago
@kixmgc Today's NBA is like 70s, teams are running spreads. Simply because there IS no Wilt, Magic, Bird or Jordan. Kobe8 & K Malone were elite. Shaq was elite. There is not one player at that level today, sorry. Certainly not KD or Melo.
LBJ maybe has established himself to that level. We will find out over next few years when Heat get quality paint players. Griffin, Love? Possible future
Over time, I predict Carmelo will be a Kiki or a Marques - top player of his day, but not alltime elite.
