I loved this movie! I finally went all the way to San Francisco just to see it last weekend. What a beautiful movie. And when Tamar-kali did her thang, I clapped like I was at a concert! Go see this one!!
I guess THEY chose a dark skinned black girl to play the PARIAH because THEIR blonde hair blue eyed girls were just too busy and were unavailable to be the unfeminine PARIAH. LOL. You know, like THEY say " race has NOTHING to do with it"
Such a shame that it has such a limited release! Only saw this today and wow, it was brilliant. Adepero Oduye deserves more attention for how fantastic she was in this movie. Beautiful and hopeful message.
@BlacknkBeats it's only playing in a few theaters...if you live in a major city it should be showing, if not, you'll have to wait until the DVD release. You should see it no matter what, though, it was very good.
heartbreak opens onto the sunrise for even breaking is opening and i am broken i am open see the love shine in through my cracks see the light shine out through me my spirit takes journey my spirit takes flight and i am not running i am choosing i am broken i am broken open breaking is freeing broken is freedom i am not broken i am free
@dopemcee Your comment is so ridiculous. You are just like the naysayers against Alike in this film. It is not just about her, it's about acceptance and rejection. Whether or not you see this movie, it will be regarded as one of the best films of the year. Don't deprive yourself of something great and don't be a PARIAH.

Wow this movie looks great. What makes me even more prouder is that the director of this movie happens to be one of my moms best friends. When my mom told me all of this just today, I was so excited! Who knew that one of my mom's closest friends happens to be the actual director of a movie!!!!!!!!! I am proud of her accomplishments!!!! Hoping that i might be able to see the movie myself:)
I am thinking this is a good movie for all people, especially when it comes to anyone who is having a hard time understanding peoples differences. I am watching it tonight. :)
Watching this preview on Jezebel, and an ad for a New Hampshire organization against gay marriage popped up. Then watching it again on youtube, and one of those ads for Ron Paul popped up, and I'm pretty sure he's neg on the whole gay rights thing, too. I mean, I was going to see this movie anyways, but now I think I'll go see it in theaters. And wtf, youtube?
wow, that's all i can say, the movie companies have an all out assault on the mind of black women, they would never eva, eva, eva, eva, eva, eva, eva, eva, eva, eva, eva, eva, eva do a movie like this about white girls. These black girls don't even realize that this is the new abortion teaching black women to be gay and to hate black men, that is the only reason these movies are getting a budget.
@3825cortland New abortion? I know a lot of black lesbians who already have children before the age of 21. Trust me, there will be no shortage of black babies being born any time soon.
@3825cortland what the hell are you talking about? there are DOZENS of lesbian movies about white lesbians. also, this isn't TEACHING black women to be gay. this is about an ALREADY gay young woman. you can't be taught to be gay. you either are or you aren't.
@3825cortland huh? you really must not be familiar with the lesbian movie genre. First movies like "personal best", desert hearts, and the hunger about white lesbians were made early 80's. Second its very apparent that this young lady LOVES her father and they have a great relationship, and third this movie was grassroots. fourth you don't have to actually have sex with anyone to have a baby. the first test tube baby is now 33 yrs old.
@3825cortland Are you joking? Do you realize how many movies have been made about white lesbians? Have you caught a glimpse of the movies that they show on logo? Well, obviously not. You can't be taught to be gay, moron.
Imagine that your world, your space, and your freedom were delimited by parents on the one hand, and the government school system on the other, no choice about either.
It's the situation Obama, Santorum and other statists want us all to be in, even after 18. One of the attractions of the "coming of age" novel is escaping into freedom.
@NerdByDesign Its not playing in my city either :( Thats because they pulled it off of a "mainstream release" cuz of the content I guess gays are being too gay AGAIN SMH @ this political bullshittttt decision "THEY" (whoever they is) made!!! Ughhhh :(
I was sooooo ready & excited to see this & of course... some bs happens... they decided not to release it in Kansas City & several other cities :( People need to stop being so closed minded about movies like this They said that maybe...later on this month they will release it I HOPE SO..... :(
Seems interesting...I hope it doesn't fall into the typical victimized Black Female movie like Precious, The Help and those Tyler Perry films. I think we seen enough of those.
Obviously you are ignorant because there is racism in the gay community and this is a fact. I am a gay persion of colour and the bigotry of white queers is very real.
Seems like they only Green lite Black Dramas when it involves some kind of controversy. So let me guess not being a asshole or nothing.. At the End when she comes out.. She's happy as fuck and the Sun comes out along with her mother telling her no matter what she will love because she is her daughter? Hollywood makes us look like asshole ever chance they get...
The Jews like to keep trying to brianwash blacks into their gay ways in order to stop new births. Whites started racism and they could take it away - if they wanted to. You know that because they are bending over backwards for these gays and the illegals. They do everything to promote that while every site you go on, local and nation, there are paid people to put down blacks everyday. Whites know that blacks historically are not gay while whites are.
when there a movie about a lesbian and actress is white people only talk about lesbians and gays and etc but now since actres sis black people have make an issue about it, come on now its not the race its the sexuality that movie is adressing. black or white, spanish, etc any woman of a race can be a lesbian DUH XD
this movie isn't just for black lesbians. It's not just for lesbians. And it's not just for members of the LGBTQ community. It's a movie for anyone with a heart, a brain, and a soul. Can't wait to see this.
@hoyageorge I think the movie Pariah is for anyone with an open mind that wants to learn about the struggles black lesbians experience in America. I also think it is great the film is from an African American lesbian perspective.
I hadn't even glanced at this until now, I assumed it was another cheesy budget lesbian movie that was shot on a camera phone and getting a lot of hype because it had lesbians in it....but I gave in and oh my God. Oh my God! It looks amazing! It's not even just a lesbian movie...and it's not just about how she's black...it's....oh my God.
@tacr5 Either you didn't read my comment, accidentally replied to the wrong comment, or you are an idiot. As a lesbian of Irish and Jamaican descent, I fail to see what is ignorant about being happy to see a mainstream, well produced piece of film about a black lesbian.
@mystoryincolor please shut up. we know that. the reality HOWEVER is that it is made BY US and it features US...and we have a right to be happy about that when most stories that make it to the big screen ONLY feature white gay males or white lesbian females.
@tacr5 well I wasn't talking about that but ookay. I have a few African American friends who are lesbians. I'm not saying anything bad about the people in this film so I think you need to calm down a little. I was sent to this trailer by a band, Tegan and Sara, who also happen to be lesbian, and Canadian by the way. So don't try to be all up, I'm just stating my point of view. You can be happy, you don't have to tell me.
@mystoryincolor Yes, but the movie is finally about a black lesbian protagonist and a black lesbian is the STAR! For far too long lesbian movies are usually about some white lipstick lesbian trying to find love. For once, it is nice to see a movie about a black lesbian and the issue of homosexuality in African American culture.
@mystoryincolor This movie doesn't just speak to lesbians. This is a social commentary on the our society if you ask me. This movie looks fucking brilliant. Can't wait to see!
But they don’t. So when we see ourselves represented on the big screen – we claim it, we’re proud and we feel validated on some level. If this offends you – you’re probably part of the problem.
The reality is that films like this fill voids. Period. If films like Pariah came out as often as the new trend of these “star-studded” holiday movies (Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Eve and Love Actually…which was ACTUALLY pretty cute), date movies (anything kate Hudson is in) and movies about ass-kickin white chicks that barely look like they can lift an iPod (anything Angelina Jolie is in) then we wouldn’t get so excited.
I don’t remember anybody asking white gay men to ignore the significance of the love story that Brokeback Mountain told about two gay men. Never before had that story been told in that way. I supported it although i'm not a white gay man and yet it was relatable. It is true that anyone that has ever been in love can relate to Brokeback Mountain. It is also the case with Pariah - we have all at some point in our lives felt like an outcast.
No its not true everbody can't relate to a straight man with a family sexing another man.. Don't assume people should say the understand broke mountian because they was in love.. Some people just don't accept homosexuality just like some people don't eat okra. I can't relate to one bit of that shit and i been in love. Don't try to sit up here and say that and make people feel its human nature to feel sympathy for a two confused cowboys.. other than that i hope this film is succesful.
. I get that the filmmaker and others who have put money behind the film want everyone to see it, not just black lesbian women. But that doesn't diminish the fact that this is a story that has not been told in this way. and as a young black lesbian, this film speaks to me on that point alone and it makes me happy. Yes, that it was written by and about a young black lesbian woman is a fact that makes me happy and proud. Why shouldn’t I be?
it annoys the hell out of me that black lesbian women are expected to downplay the significance of this film being about a young black lesbian coming into herself in order to not offended the delicate sensibilities of white folks and other non-black people of color that are gay and want to see the film.
I love how people are essentially asking "Do you know how I can watch this movie without paying, even though this is an independent film and people worked hard to put this together and probably got paid very little b/c this isn't backed by Hollywood but I don't care b/c I'm selfish."
It's frustrating to see that lots of people actually want to watch this movie, but they just can´t. It´s not going to be released where I live, and it's impossible to find it in the internet. How can I support this kind of movie if it's inaccessible?
This is going to be a fantastic movie. Very unique. I hope it gets released here in the UK. And awards from the British and american oscars as well as most of the film festivals, it is only right it does
First, Kim Wayans in a serious role...Dope...Second, this movie looks like it's going to be really good...Double Dopeness...About to go read some of the film festival reviews now
@Bloodtoxx it's a movie about most 'lez' individuals in general n how they "come out of the closet" or whatever the movie is mainly about, not just about a blk 'lez'. Don't be ignorant, most 'lez' ppl can probably associate themselves with this story no matter from which community they r from.
@AsiaFunki How was I being ignorant? I said "black lesbian movie", which is what it is. A movie about a black lesbian. Don't be so naive and sensitive, little girl.
@sexicameron "black" is only BLATANT in a all white world that shoves the white perspective, ideal, standard, etc, etc, e-fuggin-tc down society's throat. i'm happy to see a BLACK LESBIAN FILM like Pariah make it to the big screen. if you don't like how i worded that....well, you're probably white or "other" so i don't give a damn.
@AsiaFunki Having a different opinion than someone doesn't make you smart. If you were smart, you'd know that. If you had watched the preview, you would have seen an african american lesbian; how the hell can't you find the connection between the two when it's right there in front of you?
@AsiaFunki no, you're being ignorant and presumptuous. again, stay in your lane and STFU trying to tell somebody how to word something that can't begin to understand.
@HearWithoutPrejudice i've read each of @bloodtoxx comments....umm....illiterate? why do you draw that conclusion? because she her opinion doesn't line up with yours? it seems to me that she has understood exactly what you and the other fool have been barking at her. clearly she can read...even if it is bullsh*t. graduate of what? hamburger college? that doesn't count, babe.
@AsiaFunki another non-black person weaving outside of their lane trying to tell a black person how to feel, react and think about something. again, i say, STFU!
@AsiaFunki I think you are being ignorant why are you trying to downplay the issue of RACE. The movie is indeed about how hard it is to be a young BLACK lesbian in a racist white America! The queer culture in the United States is also very racist and anti black too! So I think it is ignorant for you to downplay the racial and cultural importance of the movie!
@JordanjamesX that sounds ignorant because most lgb ppl are actually not racist or discriminating, they want 2 be accepted therefore they accept others as well n I don't think that they are pretending.
@dasani605 How is it like "precious"? Just because it's about a young black womans struggles it can relate to "precious"? It's a totally different concept, honey.

Why shouldn’t I be?
tacr5 2 months ago
it annoys the hell out of me that black lesbian women are expected to downplay the significance of this film being about a young black lesbian coming into herself in order to not offended the delicate sensibilities of white folks and other non-black people of color that are gay and want to see the film.

Black lesbian movie? Nothig to see here, folks.
Bloodtoxx 5 months ago
@Bloodtoxx it's a movie about most 'lez' individuals in general n how they "come out of the closet" or whatever the movie is mainly about, not just about a blk 'lez'. Don't be ignorant, most 'lez' ppl can probably associate themselves with this story no matter from which community they r from.
AsiaFunki 3 months ago
@AsiaFunki How was I being ignorant? I said "black lesbian movie", which is what it is. A movie about a black lesbian. Don't be so naive and sensitive, little girl.
Bloodtoxx 3 months ago
@Bloodtoxx Could've worded it a bit differently. I was the blatant way you said it.
sexicameron 3 months ago
@sexicameron "black" is only BLATANT in a all white world that shoves the white perspective, ideal, standard, etc, etc, e-fuggin-tc down society's throat. i'm happy to see a BLACK LESBIAN FILM like Pariah make it to the big screen. if you don't like how i worded that....well, you're probably white or "other" so i don't give a damn.
tacr5 2 months ago
@tacr5 HA, I'm actually black, idiot youtuber. I don't even remember what i said though. Sooo screw this convo.
sexicameron 2 months ago
@Bloodtoxx I'm not being sensitive, I'm just being smart. n wat does color have 2 do with the topic 'lez'...? Just doesn't make sense.
AsiaFunki 3 months ago
@AsiaFunki Having a different opinion than someone doesn't make you smart. If you were smart, you'd know that. If you had watched the preview, you would have seen an african american lesbian; how the hell can't you find the connection between the two when it's right there in front of you?
Bloodtoxx 3 months ago
@AsiaFunki no, you're being ignorant and presumptuous. again, stay in your lane and STFU trying to tell somebody how to word something that can't begin to understand.
tacr5 2 months ago
@Bloodtoxx "your making a divide when there need not be, expand your mind and your vocabulary and maybe you'll be free"
HearWithoutPrejudice 2 months ago
@HearWithoutPrejudice I'm making no such divide, kid. Go to school.
Bloodtoxx 2 months ago
@Bloodtoxx telling a graduate to go to school is like telling a priest to go to church don't you think? Or can't you do that, illiterate
HearWithoutPrejudice 2 months ago
@HearWithoutPrejudice Telling someone to expand their vocabulary when it is sizeable is along the same lines, hypocrite.
Bloodtoxx 2 months ago
@HearWithoutPrejudice i've read each of @bloodtoxx comments....umm....illiterate? why do you draw that conclusion? because she her opinion doesn't line up with yours? it seems to me that she has understood exactly what you and the other fool have been barking at her. clearly she can read...even if it is bullsh*t. graduate of what? hamburger college? that doesn't count, babe.
tacr5 2 months ago
@HearWithoutPrejudice you must be white. there IS a divide there...and if you don't see it...you're probably white. gay or not!
tacr5 2 months ago
@AsiaFunki another non-black person weaving outside of their lane trying to tell a black person how to feel, react and think about something. again, i say, STFU!
tacr5 2 months ago
@AsiaFunki I think you are being ignorant why are you trying to downplay the issue of RACE. The movie is indeed about how hard it is to be a young BLACK lesbian in a racist white America! The queer culture in the United States is also very racist and anti black too! So I think it is ignorant for you to downplay the racial and cultural importance of the movie!
JordanjamesX 2 months ago
@JordanjamesX that sounds ignorant because most lgb ppl are actually not racist or discriminating, they want 2 be accepted therefore they accept others as well n I don't think that they are pretending.

@frozen10 Sparlha Swa and the song is called Doing My Thing.

@frozen10 No, but the soundtrack is awesome. I can't wait until it's released. It includes a lot of afro-punk and alternative black rock.

@dasani605 How is it like "precious"? Just because it's about a young black womans struggles it can relate to "precious"? It's a totally different concept, honey.
holdenisaphonie 6 months ago 5
@holdenisaphonie I'm talking about the trailer it self reminds me of 'Precious'. Keep it cute!

This movie looks like 'Precious' with a twist. I want to see it. 'Pariah' could be 'The Help' only competition during this upcoming award season.
