i agree, it gives me the same feelin and sumtimes if there is a singer that has amazing vocals, or a guitarist with amzin skills i just cant look away and feel that way too...... and this is one o those moments with both o those things happening lol
my favorite part is "so may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten"
its like.... something sad has happened but your flying away from it, into the sunrise, and upward over the mountain... whatever mountain it may have been
Ive been in situations where to be hopeful was devastating
To me the beauty of it is not only hope that things will get better.... its saying that it physically actually is getting there. The anticipation of transcendence.
its just like when bob dylan went acoustic people didnt like it as much but i think it sounds awesome either way, sure him and a guitar is way more intimate, but with a full band he can explore the sound of the song even more than before just my opinion
Does anyone know what kind of guitar Sam is playing? I thought it might some a vintage Epiphone or maybe even a Guild, but I haven't been able to confirm one way or another. Hagstrom or maybe a relic'd Eastman?
i absolutely love this song and have had the pleasure of seeing it in live performance on a number of occasions. no disrespect to sam, the band, or any fans, but i prefer sam and a guitar (and maybe sarah w/vocals and tamborine) to the band. thanks for posting, still love the vid, excellent quality.
My oldest son compiled a disc with some of his favorite songs and gave it to me as a gift. This song was one of them and I found myself nearly weeping I thought it was so beautiful. It was the acoustic version from The Creek Drank The Cradle cd. I was extremely moved by this gift from my son.
not sure about that... there is a video where sam beam is alone with his guitar and since he is limited to what he can do with just 1 guitar he actually sings the sounds form the lead guitar, it just sounds amazing.
yes, that is exactly why I said "not sure about that" I was just sharing my opinion with you (just like you shared it with everybody when you decided to comment on this video.)
you mean the concert was on Jan. 15 2008 right? because i saw him Jan 16 in Vienna and he was wearing the same outfit...
and he played the same song at our concert too. check out my "Iron & Wine live!!" video, it is them doing a whole 'religious experience' of just jamming out to the tune of this song.
i'm not saying it's a bad thing, i just thing that some songs that are originally written on his acoustic often sound best that way... don't get me wrong; i love the video and the arrangement, it was just a general comment. if i didn't like this, i definately wouldn't like the new album which i LOVE by the way.
I want this song to replace my heart beat.

@im8teennow I thought of it more simply. The Sunrise is the start of a new day, and can represent "turning over a new leaf."

@JimmyPage97 Thats what I just said.
To me hope can be double sided

@im8teennow Well I guess that would depend on what it is that you are "hoping" for.

It's a pedal steel, not a dobro.

Sam Beam, one guitar and a stage is the best night of my life.
If I only had a day to live I would give Sam all of my money so he'd come play for Eugene, Oregon (at Cuthbert Ampitheater) again before I died.

As previously stated,
I enjoy the acoustic version much better.
But I have never been lucky enough to see Sam,
And this is a fresh version compared to the acoustic.
Great quality of a video.

Why are people saying dislike to this. I agree, this is a better song with just sam. Although I do like this version.

Pedal steel guitar.

it's called a doboro. think of it as a fretless slide guitar.

it's on the album "The Creek Drank the Cradle," maybe track #6?

Oh, I know the original is on Creek Drank the Cradle. But I actually prefer the 'quicker' one being played in this vid, with the band and everything.

same, I'd love to see a re-recording in this arrangement on his next album
