@Z0MB1E165 I will agree that real swords are fun to fight with, when you're well protected. However, Amtgard does not use real swords because of safety rules. I don't think it would be good to have members getting killed on live steel and the orgnization having to shut down.
@dethmatal22 Anything is possible, if you can come up with a way to do it, then go for it. My shire personally didn't have flags, and there were a few empty jugs of water, so we used those instead. It worked out quite well
There's an actual bridge in our park so our bridge battles are pretty brutal. It's only 3 shields wide, too, so the poles are pretty boss. The only thing that sucks is having to call holds for the dead to get out of the way periodically.

This is Amtgard. We have a structured rule system. Believe me, they aren't on one knee because they want to be. They're doing it because they got hit in the leg. When hit in the leg, that knee must touch the ground at all times. You're allowed one lunge. :)

Jeez, sparring is better then this. I respect the guys who do it, but they all act like they've never held a sword or spear before. The only good attack I saw was in the beginning, with the dart throw. Nice shot.

I can't count the times I've been stabbed in the back, shot with an arrow in the back, or smashed in the face. Ow.

Have you ever actually received formal training from a reliable source with the "real weapons" in question? I can almost guarantee that you haven't if you're making these sort of comments. I also never mentioned anything about skill; these guys are very skilled at what they do. But what they are doing is getting good at the rules. I can go on if you really want me to.
You never really know how poeple would fight in a real battle, people who just charge in are dying for the purpose of killing a few others with them, in a real battle where you dont come back I doubt they'd let themselves die as much
I made that comment refering to how boffers don't act like real swords at all and therefore don't teach real swordsmanship. As John Clements once said: "Toy swords make toy swordsman"
i do real sword fighting and i find this hilarious. also having no cross guard = gay, and steel swords are a lot more fun
