  • This is only a option if you can't boil the water. With that said what he is telling you is right. you can drink small amounts so don't dehydrate. You still take a risk so only do this in severe situation .

  • You still should boil the water

  • I heard Coffey filter is good top and bottom charcoal sand fine sand and pebbles add the coffee filter in there top and bottom it has o be clean pebbles and sand nit off the ground good luck

  • arnt you supposed to use dead, dried grass rather then live grass?

  • this is not Wilderness Survival its all about how to kill yourself in the wild.your soil will kill you.soil has almost all types of bacteria in them.

  • great video really helps

  • No way my friend, your system is no where near sufficient or efficient!!

Firstly your dirt is most probably dirtier than the water. You try this in many rivers in Asia and Africa and you will be hospitalised with a severe enteric parasitic infection. All you need to do is boil that water ...and if needs be filter it through a clean sock or hose. Also watch you dont stab yourself

  • instead of poking holes in the bottom when your done, why not leave the bottle lid and cut the other end?

  • What kind of charcoal would be best for this?

  • just to be clear the charcoal if from a fire right or life bbq grill

  • This is a filter... Not a purification system. Unless you want fluid squirting out both ends of your body, boil it after filtering it! or at least treat it chemically .

  • Dont stab your hand*

  • tough stuff!

  • Also i think you need activated charcoal i dont think you can just use any charcoal you happen to have.

  • i liked the part where he purified the water... oh wait

  • Good advise, but one thing, always try to cut down and away keeping fingers and palm from the path of the blade.

A deep cut in the wilderness could be very serious, also it would disable one hand

  • @kevinbarredo very good point. Even bacteria poop.

  • White man, always think of hard way to do simple thing. I just do rain dance, and catch the rain that falls onto dropcloth/drop-pan/etc and then use it directly. Dirt inside dirty bottle has germs make you sick.

  • LOOOL 69 views;)

  • Why does he cut off the top and poke holes in the bottom? Wouldn't it make more sense to cut off the bottom and have a spout on the filter? (It would still work as a funnel if necessary.) Then use the cut-off bottom as a cup to collect the mud that you just created :)

  • Sand OR SOIL?

  • he has a little pot. awesome! lets smoke

  • *poke* *poke* *poke* "Ahh My finger!!"

  • @LINKROCKZYOU eHow: "First Aid -- When It's A Little More Than Just a Flesh Wound"

  • You would really want to use a filter like this then boil the water. The charcoal will filter out checmicals and the boiling will kill the virus/bacteria.

  • @sendkeys the boiling will kill the virus & bacteria from your urine into his drinking cup?

  • @DancingSpiderman Unless you have some type of bladder infection urine is sterile. Other than the taste the down side of drinking urine is the high salt content. A carbon filter will not filter out salt, virus or bacteria due to this there would be little "survial" reason to use this filter with urine. On the other hand carbon filter has been "reported" to help the taste and color of urine.

  • @sendkeys All very good points; thank you for adding to our knowledge. I kid you not; this info really COULD come in handy someday. Because as I say below, even bacteria poop. And we eet their poop. Cheese is delicious, as an example. Have a great day, sendkeys.

  • you saved my life!

  • lol i lo9ve how he says homemade haha

  • Oh so, that's what nature's chocolate shake looks like............

  • Loved the "leave it in the sun for six hours" comment. I dunno...I might have to let that clown drink it. He sounded pretty sure of himself.

  • IMO sand is better than dirt which is more likely to have bad bacteria and protists already there. Good video!

  • or you use the charcoal to make a fire and boil the water which actually purifies it really really well. and better than this methood

  • you can switch the grass for moss it contains iodine to help a little more, but personally this is last resort for me

  • wow... like hell im going to drink that full of bacterias.

  • Cut the bottom of the bottle off so you can close the valve. Switch the dirt for sand and small pebbles and add a layer of moss if available. At the end that you cut, add a few holes so you can hang the bottle near a fire in direct sunlight. Your water can pasteurize by the heat of the fire and direct sunlight while it filters. After an hour, open the valve and get your liquid reward, then rinse and repeat.

  • to much hassle.. i rather have the sun purification

  • The best setup for purifying water is close to what the guy stated. You want the charcoal to adsorb contaminants, such as industrial heavy metals and mercaptains. I would use cloth rather than grass, and as for the sand, I would bake it first over a camp fire.

Keep in mind that there is a difference between "purifying" and disinfecting. No matter what you do, you still need to boil the water. It is just that this method allos you to use a larger range of water sources, such as ponds.

  • @melancholyid Agreed. I am not sure most of the posters quite understand purpose of this system. ALWAYS boil, or use iodine, if at all possible.

  • or u just use your shirt to filter it and then boil it easit way and what if ur lost and dont have a water bottle

  • or u just use your shirt to filter it and then boil it easit way

  • What makes you think that adding DIRT to a water filter, is a good idea? This is Darwinism in action folks - the only trouble being is that - after you are dead from ingesting water borne pathogens, your video will still be out there! Take this down before someone gets killed listening to your advice!

  • @ogrithetrog dirt does filter water numbnuts

  • Did you know that is a lot easier simply filling the bottle with water and set in the sun for 6 hours. It is known to kill even colera, Making your water clear clean and drinkable.. This was proven in a laboratory. Sunlight is the best most healthy and cheapest way to purify water.

    Yeah

    LOOK IT UP

  • @BeKoolFool maybe u dont have 6hrs .u might need water now

  • @BeKoolFool As both a microbiologist and as a prior infantry Marine, I have to tell you, you are an idiot. Actually, let me take that back, that isn't fair. You are misinformed.

Sure, certain bacteria and fungi dislike direct sunlight (both for the higher temperature and the ultraviolet radiance), but some bacteria thrive and fluorish with it. I tell you what: Get some standing pond water, bottle it, and leave it out for a few weeks. You are going to notice a lot of growth.

  • @melancholyid did the Marine Biologist tell you to turn yer head to the side as she cupped your balls when you coughed? Infantry Marine? You guys have babies fighting wars?

I need to larn how to make these do-it-yerself britta water filters

  • @DancingSpiderman Excuse me?

  • @BeKoolFool Part of that growth is going to be the bacteria and fungi I was talking about. Part of it is going to be algae, which love sunlight as they are basically photosynthetic organisms. Algae and other dinoflagellates can be straight up deadly when consumed, especially when consumed during periods of "blooms". Not to mention you aren't doing anything to the nematoads and other waterborne parasites.

  • the easiest way to make clean pure water from your urine is to simply dig a hole, urinate into it, then set your glass into the center of the hole, all u need is some saran wrap, which u cover the hole with, weighting the center slightly with some sand. the sun will evaporate the water, which will be drawn towards the center of the plastic by the weight, dropping into ur cup, itll be as clean as the glass and the plastic, :D

  • @TehBlueNinja Who watched SurvivorMan?

:D sounds gross, but would work.

  • This should only be used as a last resort. Only do this if you have no other options available to you! Although, if you can't make a fire, something is wrong with you!

  • guys stop! i saw Bear Grylls (Man vs. Wild)do the same thing! and Les Stroud (Survivorman) also!

  • @TheJoiceWilder My proglem with Bear Grylls is that he seems to enjoy drinking his own peepee. Eeew.

  • No body listen to this guy, that would literallym just make the water more dirty.

  • i have an idea, lets ruin a perfectly good water bottle and dull your knife by cutting the plastic. there, you have ruined 2 things

  • This is ok information, but if you have real charcoal (I don't mean store bought, I mean not burnt wood), then u have the ability to make fire and should boil it.

    - Joe

  • Will this purify urine?

  • To some people here, maybe it´s best you stay home watching Glee while drinking from your BPA free bottle. Really.

  • @cameraguy1968 Actually , I enjoy staying home, watching Glee as I drink my own pee from a Weenie The Pooh sippee cup.

  • @DancingSpiderman

    Honesty is the best policy.

  • @cameraguy1968 When I sock it in the fridge for an hour before I drink my pee, it tastes cool and refreshing, like a Old Anglais or maybe a Mickeys 40

  • poke some holes in the bottom... stab stab *lose a thumb*

  • What kind of charcoal do u use

  • @tomi3557 i would assume the charcoal would be from the soot left over after making a fire (if you know how of course). Search "dual survival safe to drink" on youtube. That discovery channel show (dual survival) has 2 of the top survivalists on it.

  • If you get lost in the forest, where do you get charcoal??

  • @Forsure3333 All good forests have 24 hour charcoal shops.

  • I'm not trying to sound like a smart ass in saying this but, you gotta love how in the video he says to conserve everything you have but at the end he dumps all of the charcoal onto the ground. lol just saying i did enjoy the vid though.

  • @cinnabon7354 no one is smart in the nature world..only nature smarts the world..

  • Be careful when stabbing at ones hand and arm with a knife.

  • @edv177 yeah i probably should have been more specific, but anybody who is actually planning on doing all out survival should know the basics and should know the difference between charcoal and wood cinders.

  • okay you can also dig a hole 3 or more inches from the edge of the water source to filter it. then do what this video says, and after that is done boil the water and you have safe drinkable water.

  • when you boil water to purify it how do you stop it from evaporating? do youi take the water off the heat as soon as it begins to boil?

  • @zubatzu the second it starts to boil stop because it means all the bacteria is killed

  • @zubatzu Good question. I would put the top that I cut off on the cylinder.

  • nice try but 1) where do you get charcoal from in the middle of the woods? 2) poke holes first before you put all that junk in 3) whats the grass for?

  • @edv177 you would get charcoal from a camp fire or any other fire.

  • @NarutoFireFox84 well i wouldn't use charcoal from a camp fire cause its loaded with chemicals and fuels that are very toxic

  • @edv177 chemicals and fuels? Not necessarily, if using basic tinder with a fire starter like a fire piston etc. then it would not contain that so it would be clean

  • it's better than nothing, if in a real situation, it's better to drink it than get dehydrated and possibly die. the average survival situation is 72 hours for most lost people. Yes, you are risking giardia or other sickness but it is better than dying. I always carry tincture of iodine in my bag along with other basic survival gear.

  • @coloradocav but if you don't purify it you MAY get sick and start getting dieoriea or vomiting and both make you more dehydrated than before you ever drank anything

  • insted of cuttiing of the top try cutting of the bottom so you have a funnel at the bottem

  • How do I get charcoal in the middle of a forest? Should I just burn some wood?

  • Enjoyed your video very helpful I hope your viewers look at my urgent information. ENN (Emergency News Now) - Evacuate Florida? Thank you.

  • ummmmmmm ok, if im in a situation for SURVIVAL, i will not have all those things! So then what?

  • @wheelori814 Make a fire, Tada, charcoal. You can also use moss instead of grass. But if your in the desert your on your own.

  • @wheelori814 Start a fire, tada, charcoal. The grass can be replaced with moss by the way. If your in the desert i dont know what to tell you. Btw this guy is going to cut himself. KNIFE SAFTEY!

  • wouldn't running water over charcoal make lye?

  • this is a filter, not a purification method. This will remove debris and sediment, but I would still boil the water afterward..or use iodine, chlorox or other purification methods. eHow is for couch potatoes!

  • @Ikefis No, this filter and boiling the water is sufficient. The charcoal will absorb most heavy metals and other toxins, while boiling will kill bacteria and viruses. But if you want to be uber safe, then you can use your iodine etc.

  • @johan404 Thanks for the video. We have to be careful in terminology usage. When you say purify lots of people take that to mean"safe to drink". This method is great for cleaning the water. I use it myself...and I agree in the next step being either to boil or treat with chlorox or iodine...not both. Not attacking you. just questioned the usage of the word purification. Just look at some of the comments posted on this site. There are a lot of people who do no thinking for themselves.

  • hey, they have this idea in emergency books, but with household bleach.

  • ok STOP .... dont use this method . just go walmart , and buy some water tablets ... this altho better than just straight out of the pond-creek-lake water does not kill bacteria ... which is the whole point of purifing water pretty much .

  • thats proably gonna give u a disease

  • It guy is an idiot, the charcoal is going to remove smell and bad taste. and the grass will have so much bacteria on it, hell you should just drink from the stream, and dont use dirt, find some sand and use the charcoal sand mixture "no grass" a piece of you t-shirt is better. first boil your water then run it through your filter.

  • @robertsmi2 k grass doesnt have much harmful bacteria, streams do.

  • i was really hoping that dumbass stabbed himself when we was "poking some holes" in the bottom of his "water purifier", looked more like we was trying to stab himself

  • Why not just make a fire, and boil the wather?

  • @madshenning cause hes a jackass trying to be the next survivor man

  • @madshenning Boiling doesn't remove chemicals and other toxins, just bacteria, viruses and parasites. The charcoal in the filter absorbs heavy metals and toxins.

  • @madshenning You're right. Which is OK for this guy, camping in the woods at the back of his house, but in many places in the world fuel itself is in such short supply that families often cannot afford the large quantities of wood or charcoal needed to boil and purify their water before use

  • @madshenning boiling the water won't get rid of dirt, bugs, animal feces, and things like that. If you really want to be a safety nerd, filter the water like that, then boil the water.

  • @daddysgrl09 Ya, you should always filter the big stuff. Micro organisms can live within things. And then boiling is safest - Joe

  • @madshenning Why not filter it and boil it?

  • @madshenning this is good for on the run or somthing id say this will be plan B

  • @madshenning

That's what you are supposed to do after the filtering.

  • @madshenning Because you cant build a fire every time you wanna purify some water.

  • @madshenning takes to long

  • @madshenning if things is so easy to make a fire, there wouldnt be need to worried about living in wildernes

hes showing just in case that u cant make a fire due to conditional like rainy, wet soil, etc. but could purify water to drink

  • charcoal is a sediment? lol, i laughed so hard, i would just use the charcoal and then boil

  • CougarClan is correct - this method will not protect from viruses bacteria pesticides or heavy metals - water purified with dirt ? lmao

  • This will not protect you from getting Giardia lamblia! This guy will get you hurt !

  • yeah hurt and or dead!! i really hope people dont listen to this guy.

  • @CougarClan But can't you just boil the water after filtering it? Would that kill the Giardia parasites or not?

I'm not sure whether this hypotheses of mine is correct, so I hope you can help me out with this before I go out and get myself infected.

    Cheers!

  • @pikulicluka yes

  • @CougarClan ive gotten giardia or some other microbe from drinking water from a small water fall near a natural spring wow diariah for days vomiting like crazy huge mistake

  • @CougarClan Plus in the event of this happening, all you will need to find is a empty bottle, Charcoal, grass and every other item you need, plus drywood for making a firer, metal pots, etc. Plus I guess all this will just appear at your feet when you need it too, or maybe not :/.

  • @CougarClan True this will not but the average survival situation lasts for 72 hours which is actually the incubation period for most water borne pathogens. Remember, its a survival situation not a stay at an establised campsite, and if that water would buy me a couple of extra days to get out then bottoms up!

  • @CougarClan I think this is just as a worst case senario, like end of the world, waiting to get rescued type thing. Of course we'd want an actual water purification system, or bottled water, but if you got nothing you got to do something or you die. I would of thought though that you could of used that pan to boil water, im pretty sure if you boil water for 10 mins it kills almost anything that is harmful

  • 300 yrsago people were drinkg straight from the creek dsand lakes, but there systems were used to it from alife tie oexposur tothe bacteria and parsites. I willing to bet they ha some kind of bush medicine for the times some dd get sick from it though

  • You are right...to an extent, regarding tolerences to water borne pathogens...& local plant sources to treat infection. Many phytochemical constituents can still be harvested & applied to treat the infection/contamination & address the dehydration that occurs. Our world has more concentrated pathogens in more areas & chemical contaminents as well. There's hope. Our invasive species, like Japanese Knot Weed (Fallopia japonica) & Purple Loosestrife (Lytrum salicaria) are useful and abundant.

  • I yous charcoal to purification creek water and then boil it to.

  • Good job. Keep teaching the skills. Its a Talent that most people don't have and don't take seriously UNTIL they are in a survival situation and then it's to late.

  • Reading some of the responses here it's amazing that any of our ancestors survived. They drank from streams, mountain springs, and generally only boiled their water to make coffee. Purely amazing any of us are here. So how are we going to fix the mess we made so the "fresh" water won't kill us or make us sick anymore?

  • actually, during the middle ages people would be more likely to drink beer than water because the beer was sterile while water from wells and streams was more likely to make them sick. not that they understood the science behind it or anything.

  • beer would just make them dehydrated, then they have to drink water...

  • but what if there's no clean water to drink? or what if they're on a ship in the middle of the Atlantic ocean? the Mayflower actually made sure earlier than planned because the beer supply ran low. they new they could drink the beer without fear of getting sick because of the brewing process.

  • I can see how this might filter the water but how does this "purify" it? how does this kill the bacteria in it? wont the water come out muddy and dirty?

  • I drank from a stream coming outta the mountains in Glacier National Park Montana..my hiker buddy was all freaked out.."Oh my God! What about the cysts? What about the little worms and bacteria? You could get really sick!} Lol. Nothing happened, tasted great..it tasted great to all those ppl in the old days too that didn't boil. Umm, if the water runs really fast=no need to boil, not afraid of deer poop. slow and kinda crusty with lumps in a stagnant pond=filter and boil the hell out of it.

  • I would of cut the bottom not the top than there would be no need to poke holes on the other end of the bottle

  • cat box water no thanks

  • And whatever ya do don't sharpen that knife before getting yourself into a nasty survival situation.

  • Comment removed

  • Ray Mears is a ripoff of his off-camera survival instructors...

Good luck with following all his advice...it is poorly explained in most instances, lots of 'off-camera' prep work (screws, nails, wire, etc.) that you won't have when you really need it, too. What this guy just showed you on this video DOES WORK as a 1st stage sediment filter...which you should NEVER drink from! 2nd stage filtration is required first...and Ray Mears DIDN'T tell you that part, either!

  • You could get charcoal using a fire, but if you already had a fire why not just boil the water.

  • This video is irresponsible (as another commented). Even if you were to use this filter, the water should still be boiled afterward to kill all the nasty little things that would pass straight through grass and charcoal.

  • Sediment strainer filters are for removing sediments, such as mud and rust...great, if you are getting water from a muddy stream...this would be your first filtration...then, you would boil the water to kill organisms...10-minutes of boiling, minimum, for water you plan to drink...careful of cross-contamination, and don't keep the water longer than 24-hours after boiling, unless you chlorinate it with sodium hypochlorite (bleach).

  • Thanks for the info on not keeping boiled water for more than 24 hours. i did not know that ill keep it in mind.

  • boiling does not remove cysts, dirt, etc. Boiling should be considered 2nd stage purification, to follow 1st stage filtration. few situations require 3rd stage osmotic membrane transferrance...

If you filter and don't boil, you'll get parasites and amoebas! If you boil and don't filter, you will get sand, sediment, and possibly some detriment (i.e.: what's your cat's name...and where is his litter box?) 1st and 2nd stage...and your water is clean enough to drink.

  • if your're lost in the woods how are you gonna find charcoal?

  • Build a fire, burn some wood, let the coals cool, presto!! Charcoal.

  • Build a fire, boil the water, then you wont need this filter.

  • watergrass5150

You burn wood to make charcoal.

  • @watergrass5150

You make it using fire and burning the wood :)

  • why didnt he use the other end of the bottle, so that he can use the "funnel", while no holes digging required, as well as a switch.

  • What if water is radioactive ?

  • Perhaps lol. Do you enjoy violent techno?

  • @ninelivecat

Get ready to glow in the dark :D

  • just cut the bottom off

  • Very interesting to know..

  • Makes much more sense to cut the bottom off

then you have a spout at the bottom that won't leak, cutting off the top makes no sense.

  • Yeah he is just a rookie.

  • Well that all depends on time, if you are trying to build a shelter and find food your not going to want to stand around holding a water bottle all day. If you cut the top off the bottle can stand and therefore be filled and left to filter while doing something else. I found this to be very informative and will be watching more.

  • Why not poke the holes first and then fill it up?

  • Charcoal is your burned black coals

    not charcoal form the store.

You will need your Obama survival kit soon. Study and be ready.

  • Only thing I could see wrong with this method. I hope someone don't grab some type of posionious weed.

  • I can't find the video where he actually does it. This is the 2nd video he's had with no filtered water!

  • He says "poke a few holes with your knife"he poke like 20 holes XD

  • fickin cool but whats with the siren

  • looks like a serial killer at 2;48

  • usually in most running streams it doesnt need to be filtered unless you know its source and know whats in and out of the water and even in most cases the water is safe enough to drink just stay away from still water and with dead animals floating and you will be fine and always you can boil the water as well which is the most effective

  • i think you mean filtration, not purification.
