I agree with other comments: as probably a Cherubino sung by Frederica von Stade could be better, this Cherubino sung and played by Maria Ewing (26 years old in 1976) is without any doubt the best. A special THANK YOU to Elias12186 for his effort to delight us all with a perfect presentation of this version of Nozze di Figaro!
Le Nozze Di Figaro was the first opera to which I took my then girl friend in 1953, we married two years later. Cherubino's aria has always been my favourite and remains so to this day. Such a wonderful performance - one to be remembered.
Ewing plays the part perfectly. I like the fact that she actually looks like an adolescent boy, not voluptuous as compared to so many women who sing this role (Cecilia Bartoli)
haha, 3:09. i love cherubino's aria. i never liked the aria from susanna after that much but in this movie i simply adore it. i think that's cause of kiri's and mirella's great acting at 6:00 following. this movie is awesome!!
Ewing's Cherubino is perfect in every way! This IS a comedy; Cherubino is a comic character! Ewing contrasts the loveliness of the aria with the ridiculous adolescent expressions of the character without stooping to mugging. Inspired singing AND acting!
In my opinion, Ewing is the weak point of this cast. Ponnelle miraculously pulls a decent physical performance out of her - for once, she does not seem to insist that the character she's playing is mentally retarded - but not even he (and not even Bohm!) can stop her from scooping and sliding all over the place. Maybe it's a personal failing, but I have never liked this artist, and wish von Stade had been cast instead.
YOU are the weak point among the comments !! You apparently have ONE idea about how this scene should be performed and what the character of Cherubino should be.
Even if Ewing somehow overacts or overplays the role, she at least brings out the torments of so far unknown feelings in a very catching way, can' t you get that ??
The character is not mentally retarded at all. Cherubino is just a teenager experiencing his first emotions of love and consequently he is ardently in love with everyone wearing a skirt. Maria Ewing's performance, both acting and singing, is extraordinary. Actually I've never seen or heard any Cherubino with so much passion . I happen to own the DVD of this (Ewing) recording and I have to say I find it outstanding in every respect.
While I've heard better-sung Cherubinos, Ewing is the only one I believe is a thirteen-year-old boy instead of a thirty-something woman. Her physical acting is ace. Brava(o?) indeed!
This is one of the best acting i have ever seen in operas.

grazie, nel film avevo capito che era una donna ciò che mi stupiva era se anche i ragazzini castrati dell'epoca avevano una voce così
