OH MY GOD! Did we do this? Did we turn him into this thing? This detached futuristic "no such thing as love" Quasimodo, Hunchback of Notre Dame creature standing alone on an empty stage with nothing but electronic equipment for our entertainment? We should be ashamed. We should feel guilty. Fame is powerful. Fame is addicting. Even the best people succumb to its power. Look what we've done. I don't ever want to make a person famous again. I just want to listen to good music.
@NelsonClick i - nah, he's ok, he is not takin this playin machines in front of people seriously, just does to remind folks of the good ole days! but for folks out there he just not Thomas Dolby anymore, he's Sir Thomas Dolby like most famous Brits!
I am envisioning four walls at home that wake me with different dawnings each day, with virtual music llike this virtual music artist is doing, with several screens depicting every word of the lyrics that proceed from his mouth. If the world had enough money it could go broke doing this!
He really is fantastic. I'm just getting into the rest of his catalogue, beyond Golden Age of Wireless and Aliens Ate My Buick, and playing A Map of the Floating City like a junkie. I have his Amerikana EP, and I can say he hasn't lost a thing. It's really brilliant.
@76SRV190 No, he's just aged. He is in his fifties now, believe it or not. He's in pretty great shape - check out his Toad Lickers video. He does bald really well!
@gsaustin -yes, unlike most white men with bald melons he has a nice shaped head, that's important part of being bald. lol Do you know how old this video is?
Music of the Cold War....eerie and well done. In the 1980's, there was a very real contest under the Atlantic, with the Royal and U.S. Navies on one side and the Soviet Navy on the other, each trying to track the other's submarines.
Note that he plays almost all of the parts live, without much help other than the drum machine. That is impressive. I can play one part at a time to the song, and only along with the video. I couldn't do anything like this live.
Maybe a couple years old now without looking at the dvd.

Dolby had clearly been playing The Chaos Engine before this was filmed.

@NelsonClick But you didn't make Thomas Dolby famous, you made Donny Osmond famous.

It's what's inside that skull that's important, and simply put, that's the mind of a genius!
