Ok,hate to get involved here but one can only witness so much bashing of a fantastic musician..as was stated by thomas recently in a modern drummer interview,he said that his interest in the band was to take a back seat and jus lay it down solid in the band but that was what was in the interest of Omar, hence he was let go,unfortunately...if you think thomas lacks groove or feel, you are wrong, take a look at his recent projects, bottom line,he and actually ever Mars Volta drummer have been amazing
Thomas was like having a top-of-the-range, bells and whistles supercar. It's great when you're using it on a racetrack (Wax Simulacra, Goliath etc) and you're hitting the apex nicely at every corner, but if and when you're just using it to drive down to the shops and back (any of the calmer/simpler songs) and it's guzzling gas (putting in fills where they're not required) and costing you money (groove), it's just not right for the situation (band).
you are the master of stupidity.. who are you to tell where fills are requiered or not?
lack of groove? I LOL every time some idiot says that. he might not be as groovy as theodore was (he is close tho).. and theodore doesnt have chops anywhere near thomas's
so.. thomas is the ferrari .. theodore is the ford..
@winnerbaby44 Oh, cheers for that accurate, in-depth descirption of my character. You must have been avidly watching me throughout my 22 years on this planet.
However, I don't recall ever TELLING anybody anything. You read my opinion; take it or leave it, but don't hurl abuse at me because I don't operate at such a level. Omar must have shared my view to some degree because, I dunno if you noticed or not, but Pridgen's not in his band anymore. If the Ford is right for the race, use it.
@DangerRifai While we're on the subject, if you know as much about music as you let on, you'll know that groove is created by the space between the notes, more than anything else. So my point still stands that Pridgen playing 200mph fills with zero space between his notes loses groove; especially when the other musicians, as awesome as they are, can't understand the timing of his fills and lose where they are in the song. Don't kid yourself and say it didn't happen, because it definitely did.
@DangerRifai wish they could have drummers on tour.....so they can tag team between songs, because i do agree Thomas wasnt great on slower songs, but he MADE Bedlam in goliath ( i meant in style or whatever i know Omar actually makes it happen) That Cd was so epic and if he wasnt in it i dont think it wouldve been as good. i do miss his playing style though...
I can dig this guys drumming but it just has a way different feel than Thomas' drumming. They seemed to have way more fun, now it just looks akward between them."uhh......hey...." Awesome performance though.
He isn't close to Thomas's skills but this is a good thing, Pridgen overpowered the band and his style wasn't as compatible. This guy, although he 'can't make his own signature style,' which isn't even true, is a much better fit for the band as a whole.
they were fills where you can tell he's been in the band for less than a month; but I really enjoined his performance, he seems to have a subtler approach. It is evident that he has jazz notions.
@NotYourBiggestFan It really surprised me that he plays that way because I saw some videos of him before he started touring and it was as insane as Thomas.
@rippist91 Thank god Elitch wasn't permanent. Deantoni Parks is the best fit for Volta since Theodore.

I'm starting to like this Dave guy a little bit. He remembers that there's a whole band playing with him.
Skeptically optimistic till their next album comes out though.

Some cat hidden at the left side of the stage, my guess is that it was the guitar tech.

Lol he is not close to thomas skills :P
You cant compare a elite drummer who won award at 15 years old and modern drummer member to a guy who cant make he`s own signature style :P

@NotYourBiggestFan whats weird about that is that he's in or was in a heavy metal band and he's got a softer touch than pridgen the gospel drummer...
