I like Benoit. Anderson Lite 2.0. I believe Jon in his day was much more accurate vocally. But where are you going to find someone that can even approach what Anderson was like in '72. Vocals are very dry and I noticed a lot of pointing for sound level changes. Fire the guy on the board. A good sound man could have made this performance much better. As for the keys, oh the humanity! What is going on there? Is this Wakeman's kid? Love Yes, dislike nepotism at the expense of virtuosity.
@CognitiveDissonanceX Agree, Benoit not a patch on Anderson and neither is the keyboard geezer a patch on Wakeman. Sometimes I think it's time for a band to call it a day and I think now is the time if they cannot get all the original members back. My problem tonight is that I watched the 1973 version first.
I've been a massive fan for 40 years. This is one of the messiest versions ( a relative term for Yes) I've ever heard. Perhaps it's just getting harder to maintain the focus. Having said that, I've seen this lineup on great form. How long can they continue? All things must come to an end sometime. But fantastic memories nonetheless.
Bizarre. You have to concede the music still sounds good (especially Steve) but it's just weird to get in a Jon Anderson impersonator. Better to not try to copy and move on to reshape the sound a little.
Damm they are still good. I saw twice at Madison Square Garden and they sound as good as they were back then but obviously MSG was much louder and had all the bells and whistles of the backing crew and big rigs. Rick Wakeman was still in the lineup as well as Jon Anderson and Chris as well as Steve Howe. Drummer was Alan White. One of the very best concerts I've been too.
Phantastic recording: great sound, crispy clear video, zooming in on players! Magnificent! Will see them play in 4 days here in Copenhagen! Can't wait!
32 dislikes? WTH. These guys are still out there doing it because they love doing it and they still deliver the goods every nite. David's doing a great job filling Jon's shoes. Thumbs up to musicians that love making music.
I though the performance was amazing. Benoit does an amazing job singing this, and I think he can sing Anderson's stuff better than his own. Sure Steve misses some notes, or we don't have the same magnificent keyboard stuff, but they are alive and well kicking ass! Long live Yes!!!
COMO SI ESTUVIERAN EN 1968 CUANDO SE FORMARON EN LA CUNA DEL ROCK PROGRESIVO INGLATERRA.......SON EXCELENTES MUSICOS Y ESTARAN PARA SIEMPRE EN VARIAS GENERACIONES......EXCELENTE VIDEO, UNA FELICITACION A QUIEN LO SUBIO.
Saw Yes at the Glasgow Apollo in 1977 - Going for the One tour. Classic lineup - Brilliant. I won't scream 'fake' or 'cabaret' as some others have, I will say this though;
Sometimes it's just impossible to go back to old things, or try and get the ‘old kick’ out of them, just as we remembered them. We have them as we remember them, and they are fine and wonderful just as they were...
This is cool sounding...Yes Rules even in the 21st century...give Benoit David some slack...live performing is tough...I used to love The Who as my favorite group, and Roger Daltrey's voice during Love Reign O'er Me wasn't always the greatest live, and he is one of the all time greats singing in the studio...as long as Benoit sounds good in the studio, and Fly From Here is a very good album...
I recently heard Fly From Here in its entirety. To be fair, it has its moments...almost all due to writing. Any of those moments would have worked better with Jon at the helm. But, as with Drama, FFH simply does not sound much like a Yes album without Jon. FFH would have been a fine STARCASTLE album.
The "epic" side works for me on an atmospheric level. Side 2 seems like fluff & filler to me. Too much strumming...too folky, at least to my ears.
@rannrudisill dude, would you like anything written by anyone if it were "bad" writing? that makes no sense... It's like saying, "I love Close To The Edge because it was written very badly, just played very well"...
@rannrudisill I felt as you at first few listenings, but after a few weeks FFH to me now sounds like Yes Album era engineering, harmonies and playing. I am quite happy with the album now.
I have followed Yes since the 1960's. The new guy Benoit is ok, but i think Anderson is much better and on tune. Sometimes it seems Benoit seems to crack and be a bit off. Maybe he can't carry the high notes like Anderson. They are very old now, and still playing. Steven Howe is the best. He can play chords and combinations like no other. In fact he is Yes. I played the guitar back in the days, but was never able to come close to his speed and dexterity with a guitar. Go Jon Anderson!!!!
Wasn't this the first show on the tour? I can understand why it's not as great as it should be. I've seen this lineup on three different tours where the engine is well past warming up, in gear and on fire. I've also seen the Classic line up in the last decade and they would have moments of brilliance and moments of "did they just do that? Greatest example, the opening night of the fall leg of Classic the Yes 2002 tour, Clearwater, FL. Even the classic line up in its latter years had uglyness.
Since 1997 YES has been less than stellar! Lousy sound systems, Musicianship that is 90% less than 1971 -1979. After 6/30/79, the last In The Round Tormato Show, people were in shock for the rest of their lives. After the 2002 show people were saying no big deal! I went to see them in 2002 with people who never saw them, telling them they are the best ever. After the show they say no way are they the best ever. I just tell them that they are 25 years too late in seeing them.
I'm a 14 year old girl and seeing them August 2 in L.A. with either my mom or dad and some friends. Doing the meet and greet. Can anyone tell me what it's like? All I know is that Steve isn't usually there, which is disappointing because I'm a guitar player too
@GuitarMasterizer It's after the show, they make you wait while they take care of the lesser package holders who just get tees and posters. then the group comes out for photos, bring your own camera. then they sit down for autographs and they move you along fairly quickly since it's kinda late and they are obviously tired... you have time for a few small comments during pictures and signing. i'm with you, i always get nervous and can only issue a few words of praise... Be sure to thank them :)
Musically this still stands as they play it - mostly because Steve still has his licks...The vocals are dreadful, weak and simply kill the song...CTTE is a mood song, it is an odyssey that transplants the listener as it evokes the images...this rendition does none of it as it technically still proficient and that's all...Hey, I can play the passages on the keyboards too but will be CTTE? Jon makes this song happen! (Steve is still awesome!!!)
I really do appreciate Benoit David and I think he's great...there's nothing wrong with Oliver Wakeman, either....but something doesn't work here. No matter how hard I try, I always feel like this is fake. It wasn't "fake" when Anderson wasn't there for Drama...it was still Yes...but now, even with the "Drama II" line-up it feels like something is wrong. I think that it's something to do with Squire's attitude, but it seems like the chemistry isn't working here.
I'm so sorry Jon Anderson!- This is an insult to his talent and the magic of YES...better to not play at all than to do this.I hope Jon never has to see this.Wish you health and peace of mind Mr.Anderson...your fans don't forget you!
still a classic yes track no matter what but vocals arnt and never will be as good as jons, i like olivers playing so like ricks! why has oliver been replaced? i never rated geoff as a natuiral yes keyboard player! oliver isnt rick but hes better than geoff. still great stuff looking forward to when they are back in UK later this year
ouch, gave this another listen. the musicianship for me is ok...they are doing a decent job...during the instrumental portions, I'm digging it. The vocals are not good thought, IMO. Squire and Howe are part of that, their voices have not aged well. But the lead vocals like depth in timbre. Very hollow sound...and then at times it is flat and screechy. This is particularly noticeable in the last movement. around 19 minutes and beyond, the train comes off the vocal tracks
Eingewachsner Zehnagel Zum Glück haben die diese Lusche am keyboard rausgeschmissen! Bei 5:40 hört alles auf! Bei 7:36 reichts sogar dem Squire! oohh, aaahh, das keyboard....aahh
I had a lot of fun at the Orlando show. The fact is that these guys are musicians and this is what they do. Just as much as they are prolific songwriters, they are prolific at touring and love to play. After one show in Orlando, Steve Howe was out at a small club playing solo for whoever showed-up. I really can't criticize anything about them - I don't look the same as I did 20 years ago and I can't sing exactly like Jon Anderson either. They are all fantastic. No complaints at all!!!
The mix sound a bit different from where I was sitting. It is interesting to note. People here are pretty harsh with their comments. I can concede that Benoit's voice was off that night but everyone else was very much spot on, including Oliver Wakeman. I noticed how cynical the fans on these forums can be. Sure, it is always easy to criticise. I bet if the current line-up would agree to play for beers in any of these people's backyards they soon would forget their all of their nasty comments.
My very first concert experience was when I was 15 years old. Saw Yes perform at the Seattle Colliseum "in the round" May 8, 1979. Still one of the most magical experiences of my musical life. @pushplay Odd, I thought the vocals actually started to improve at that point and were worse leading up to it. Benoit was holding the notes too long and over-stylizing to the point of being ridiculous. As far as the harmonies, keep in mind this is from a hand-held camera - hardly the source to properly discern any mix, good or bad. The tempo is probably driven by the Hammond solo, since nobody could play it with the speed RW did on Yessongs. Moraz didn't even try - he changed it.
I agree that the vocals are less then desirable although I've seen Benoit twice and he was way better both times. It sounds like they took the echo off his voice and that may be hurting him. Benoit was holding the notes too long and over-stylizing to the point of being ridiculous.
