    It sounds to m like Bassoon is simply laying down the Basso continuo line.

  • @grandadpoppyable Well - the dictionary definition is "An instrumental part that is integral to a piece of music and should not be omitted in performance." And that is exactly what the bassoon is doing here - a very intricate tenor line which makes a great deal of interplay with the rest of the orchestra and the voice. Don't you hear it at the beginning? As far as I remember (from playing it myself as well as listening to it) the bassoon NEVER plays the continuo line!

  • @ScarletOGrady I could be mistaken. A novice Violinist like me could be chastised and forgiven for allowing myself to think such a thought. I see how its not continuo now. Ty for correcting me .Im still a learner about music. I see now that the solo here was the human voice and the Bassoon simply an accompaniament, not an underlying Basso.
