If the tip is stainless with no chrome, SOS pads work wonders to get old oxidation off of it.

I have used mothers metal polisher before. Please take a look at: The Blue box "Wenol" tube. It is hard to find, but it's the best stuff I have found to use on regular mufflers. For really dirty mufflers, I always use AutoSol metal polish to start with.

The blue box Wenol, is not corrosive, and bites into the metal the longer it stays on. I can watch the chemicals at work, seeing the metal's shine enhance minute to minute.

Try it out. You might like the results too!

another reason to clean the exhaust pipe is that the carbon build up (especially on a turbo charged car) will eventually start to spray onto the bumper, which can discolor it and even burn it.

@adampope64 Cleaning the tip of the exhaust will not help this. That is an engine management problem causing it to run too rich. Temperature sensor? O2? Timing off? Vac leaks? MAF/MAP sensor?
