Very cool! Not only did he tear his larynx, he started smoking pretty heavy, too. That's why his voice didn't sound as strong, after Superunknown. Still, one of the best rock vocalists of all time!
ugly truth is off of Louder than Love released in '89, a couple yrs before this performance. That album has songs in his higher register like this one here. I saw them a couple of times back then in Philly, Cornell ( and the whole band) were always on and killed it.
I can tell he was sick or tired existed and thats why his voice sounds run down, But i saw Sound Garden live a year or so before this, they opened up for Skid Row(Half the stadium walked out after sound garden) and his voice sounded great just like the album and better. It was a Solid straight hour of non stop early sound Garden.Oh they so blew Skid row off the stage, ha ha ha
...any live music kicks ass over any studio recording...it's raw and the only reason they choose to be a band and play in the first place...if any band copy cats any other band in history....then they all copy Elvis and the Beatles....zip it....already...
wow, cc sounds like shit...and i don't know why he would wanna saddle himself with that guitar. it's alot easier to concentrate on singing without halving to play at the same time...
I think this was in the days that he didnt wear in-ear-montitors (my friend calls em that...) I know I was like, wow... but hey, its Soundgarden so who cares? Lol
you can prefer soundgarden from black sabbath, but even though they arent a copycat band from sabbath, just remember without them soundgarden wouldnt be soundgarden as you know it. so you must show some respect to heavy metal godfathers
Depends on who you catagorise as "psycho". But, his influence on, say, Adam Jones, was always apparent early on and straight away for those paying attention.
The Cult and Soundgarden are the two favourite bands from my youth. They toured Europe along with Pearl Jam back in 92 as well. Great times.
In truth, Soundgarden were always the greater artists. Early Cult stuff was massively influential on the alternative rock movement of the time though.
@ABTE67 first, both band have nothing to do and second, having a better guitarrist in your band is so definitive factor (anyway i dont know in which ways billy is better than thayil)
My bad I thought u were kidding...you were making it sound like superunknown is super-rare. (like, "dude, I know you've heard 'louder than love'--but check out 'black hole sun' for good soundgarden") I don't know maybe its just me...
And yeah, mailman does sound odd timed, tho in the chorus I think Matt Cameron just puts the accent in different places, making it sound odd-metered. Not to mention the turnarounds on the verse...
what a fukin awesome performance.....this is probably the first song of the night considering it takes half the song for Chris's voice to warm up.....he never warmed up before shows lol.....
EdarinoDasa your dumb as fuk no one sounds exactly like they do on the record unless its pop. he sounds good here, has nothing do do with range. maybe he chose to sing it a different way.
This is 4 years after the song came out, and his range was already shortening a little bit (but still awesome), and lump that in with the fact that everybody has a bad day at what they do, I would say this was just a bad day. But trust me, he could do well live.
@douchedouche123321 i think that stupid people will never understand the difference with studio and live recording. I dont think that this is a very difficult concept, but, i dont know why, some people couldnt understand that if is it.
@douchedouche123321 i just saw them live 2 days ago and it sounds like his voice is like a muscle..the more he works on it the stronger it gets..and his voice was better than ever then..and they played a 2n half hour show
you think down on the upside is commercial? they never gave in to any record label intentions, or so theyve said. One of the reasons you've gotta respect the band, they always did what they wanted. They also produced their final album themselves, another indication that theirs really nothing commercial about it
ok commercial wasn't the right word to use, but is was way to poppy,
Chris always wanted to be famous, after Black Hole Sun, which is in my opinion one of their weakest songs, the band knew with which kind of songs you get famous.
Chris wanted to keep that style, Kim was completly against this. That's been also the reason for the later split-up.
With commercial i meant more mainstream. I know, it's only my opinion, but i think alot of early Soundgarden appreciators agree with me.
Well you see what happens with that mentality, you can no longer keep up the ability to make music....compare Kim to Chris now....Chris is still releasing albums and all of them are great in their own reasons..and kim well..no one cares anymore. As much as people hate 'commercial', you gotta keep your band moving, the music business is BUSINESS and if you let go of your 'business' side..say goodbye to your career. Fans forget how much making money affects whether a band stays alive or not.
FINALLY! You hit the nail on the head. It's hilarious how many kids sitting in their parents' basements condemn adults making a living in a band because they "sell out" or write music that's more mainstream.
That's their damn job! Should they keep their integrity all the way to the local shelter when they lose their house?
Down on the Upside wasn't poppy at all....it was probably their most experimental album w/ their widest range of styles and sounds....u have no idea what u are talking about
If Chris wanted to be famous, he would have continued soundgarden. It'd be his best shot. He refuses to make new soundgarden cuz he doesn't want to run the risk of fuckin up an awesome discography.
You totally hit it..if soundgarden got back together itd be the same bumbling bullshit as every other comeback tour has been. Too many bands are doing this and they all shouldve learned from the beatles...or dave chappelle..say what you have to, then end it while youre still on top and will be remembered nostalgically. Smarter move creatively than just cashing in on this wave of comebacks. I wish other sg fans would stop sitting on their hands-just support cornell cause he's making out just fine
Props to Soundgarden for changing it up at 6:18. To digress - adding Ben Shepard in the mix ultimately gave them the boost the needed at the time; he fucking rocked the house! Jason Everman sucked (how does one man get kicked out of Nirvana and Soundgarden?) but props to Hiro, he did rock also.
we must remember on the album he's not just singing, he's shrieking! the only singer along with Plant to pull this miraculous feat off! not an easy thing to do night after night!
Well everyone can have a bad day.. I still love his vocals one this once though! Something about it makes me like it even though it sounds like he just woke up XD
Ben was like the quiet mothafucker like the less popular one...others have big name like but ben...you like wtf is a ben sheppard!?!?! But his stage appearance is sooooo awesome...he looks like he came from Type o negative or Danzig ahah his sooo stoned...and chrises voice makes me want to smack my mother...it kinda sucked here!

His vocals are ugly! What the hell was Chris thinking. Maybe his monitor speaker wasn't working that day. Painful to watch. Butt what a great sound, Soundgarden's best.
Chris' voice was changing at the time. Big difference between Louder Than Love and Badmotorfinger. One's voice can only last as long, unlike any other instrument.
This is the song that got me into Soundgarden all those years ago. It's one of their trippiest and darkest with fantastic layering of guitars on the record. Great to see a rare live rendition. if you were to ever play a show, you would understand how straining it gets on your voice to sing like that.
the badmotorfinger album was written with very demanding vocal parts.
of course, when he recorded the songs,
he didn't do them all in one take you fucking idiot.
they do them one at a time, when his voice is in best shape you fucking bastard.
and playing a show this big, he's obviously not gonna be as "good" sounding you dumb mother fucker.

of the, literally, thousands of extremely talented drummers in the world, matt cameron ranks top ten...power trip (off of this album) ranks, in my opinion, as his highest achievement

It took a little bit before Chris' vocal chords warmed up. But once that happened, there was no stopping this song.
By the way, considering the outstanding quality of the audio, the video resolution is more than acceptable. Excellent post.

His voice was awesome on that record and bad motorfinger. When I saw them on badmotorfinger he was amazing. Not to mention the whole band!
