Awesome job! For me though I thought the cymbals were a bit too loud. Not much you can really do about that, except for a high end roll of or something. Might sound bad though.
Oooh! I love your playing! In my ears (and eyes!) you sound really good! I enjoyed watching this, since you seem to have a very tasteful sense of approaching music, both regarding drumming and creating music. Don´t you dare to stop...
@Drumminsince89 Thanks man. Yes I still have the track. I actually recorded the drum track to the song while I filmed it at the same time. It was a little tricky.
Got kind of a nice, loose kind of "Flying" sound, with maybe a bit of Portishead in there. I like it alot man; lots of character in all the tones. Bass,keys,drums...all sound fantastic.
If I remember right the snare was tuned fairly low but the snares themselves were pulled very tight giving that almost gated sound. Thanks for watching!
@Jim5150jvc actually I used lounge lizard. Very under rated software. I plugged in my garage sale special keyboard/midi device and that was it. Thanks for the compliment.
I used a Fostex Model 450 mixer and an M-Audio Delta 1010LT! Take that Protools! I made this video to prove that you don't need expensive gear to get great sound if you simply know what your doing. Thanks for the comments. I really appreciate it.
I love the music, your playing and the sound! Do you use any "powerful" preamps with both mics? Maybe tube preamps to help you achieve that warm, compressed sound? It sounds really really great to me. And again, i love the song. Very lysergic!! Simple and beautiful like the sound of the drums.
@Kaiserroyo I'll tell you, I've been recording on a limited budget now for over 15 years. I've done so much research and experimenting it almost cost me my marriage. I used a Fostex Model 450 8 channel mixer ($60). You'll laugh when you see the pic on google! So, I cant understand these guys nowadays that talk all this Protools, API, SSL, Ultra Mega Super preamps, technical crap. That album sound can be achieved with basic tools if you know how to use them. I really appreciate your comment.
@Rarenova Dude you said it. Bands have lost that old rock and roll edge. I'm into metal and most of the bands even underground sound way overproduced. Heck some of my favorite sounding music is Motown stuff that was recorded in the 60's.
@Rarenova This is so inspiring, that is a great drum sound with no bug names. Too many people in the business these days go on about their gear they can't work without. IMO, idea beats gear every time.
i love this kinda sound on kits. at least for what i want. love that "old" sound. as matter of fact, i searched "recording drums beatles" and this is what came up! nice video
Thank you very much for the compliment. Sometimes you have to keep it simple with both music and recording. As far as drums go you only have 2 ears so why use any more than 2 mics? If you understand what your doing, even that legendary vintage sound can be achieved. In all my research all those great albums and their sound were the result of GREAT music and simple recording techniques. That's the secret. shhhhhhh!
I put the EV above the drum set about 5.5 feet and I put the sm57 on the kick outside front off center to the left facing the set. Yeah you cant really see the mics in the vid. Everything was kind of done on the spot with no real planning.
great sound! you definitely got the Ringo vibe. I can tell you did a good job tuning the drums before recording- which really is one of the most important steps in recording a good sound
Oh yeah - sweet. Good sound and playing. Lovely. I always run the bass down the middle but yeah. Vaguely reminds me of the '70s Belgium funk rock band Placebo - but that's probably cos of the Rhodes or Wurly sound as much as anything.
Very cool. I like less mics and a mono drum recording over the crazy, 12 mic hard panned mess. Very neat, man. Vaguely reminds me of Radiohead for some reason.
Haha Thank you! I'm laughing because the ride is a Paiste 505! (Free!) However the others are Zildjian Avedis, very dark. The one overhead mic I'm using is an Electro Voice RE11 and SM 57 on the kick. I'm sorry but those guys that type in those recording forums on the net make me laugh a little. You don't need half the crap you would think to make good recordings. I'm going to post a video on how I record with cheap and old stuff that can be found laying around. I think people will dig it.
I only use two mics on even crappier drums in an untreated garage and I also use an RE11. Love it. People forget that condenser mics were used to fight the high-end loss of using tape and bouncing tracks. Before tape took over in the early 50's, dynamics and ribbons were used as much or more than condensers. Digital doesn't cut high-end, so dynamics and ribbons are often better matched to digital recording. In the end, good ears are truly priceless.
NICE TRACK.. OH AND THANKS FOR POSTING I WAS WONDERING WAT THE BEST WAY TO RECORD DRUMS W 2 MICS WAS.. IM JUST STARTING TO RACORD ON MY OWN AND HAVING A HARD TIME..LOL... THANX..
Thanks. Yeah I would like to post more music but Im so busy with work right now. As far as the keys Im using Lounge Lizard then adding my own personal touch with various analog devices, sorry have to keep that one a secret. But you should have a good start with Lounge Lizard. Creamy! Ha, I like that one! Thanks again.
This is pretty badass. You should definitely share more music. If you don't mind telling me, I'd like to know what you are playing through for keys. It all sounds really creamy.
@Barbosa123 Its a 1960 Rogers Holiday model champagne sparkle. EV RE11 on overhead and sure sm 57 on kick. I mean I have good mics but sometimes the strangest things will get you the sound you hear in your mind. For this case it was super analog vintage. Its kind of funny but my crappy camera quality seems to actually blend with the sound I was going for. Thanks again for your comment.
Awesome job! For me though I thought the cymbals were a bit too loud. Not much you can really do about that, except for a high end roll of or something. Might sound bad though.
