a simple beating would not equate to 5 years of jail, try beating you until you have a fractured skull and are 6 months in coma. That would probably amount to a total recovery-time of 5 years.

I said the way people make it sound pain is exponentially worse than standard punishment thus making it exponentially more effective for that person, at least in my book. as for beating someone to a coma, there would probably be no recovery from the swelling and brain damage that put you into the coma, so your over zealous example is just that, over zealous.
