Every good alliance has a spymaster—it certainly isn't unique to GoonSwarm. It's actually quite difficult to do well; coordinating information and spies as well as deciding when and when not to make use of opportunities. Far from "doing nothing," there's a reason Aaron Static (IGNE director) passed this along to Mittani. He's the decision-maker for all things espionage in GoonSwarm.

The mega-alliances such as GoonSwarm and former-BoB know that honor is a luxury you can't live with once you've made it big.

EvE is a phenomenally tedious logistical game with some space combat on the side. BoB had long-standing near-total control of a VERY nice part of the game universe.. Now, their control has been interrupted, and everyone in the game is rushing in to carve up the pieces. BoB still has a huge member base, but they're fragmented; it'll take years for them to ever recover.
Infrastructure in EvE takes months of real time to construct, you see. A corporation takes control of a chunk of space, builds improvements of various sorts that let them move fleets quickly, harvest resources efficiently, and exploit the terrain more effectively -- it amounts to a massive investment of hundreds of people's time. Now, someone in the upper echelons of the corporation just handed Goonswarm the keys to their assets, right down to the corporation's name itself.
All of BoB's individual holdings are ok...but the massive group holdings are gone. Imagine, if you will, that someone in WoW defected from their guild. Now, imagine that they didn't just walk with the guild bank; they walked with all the guild's tradeskill capacities, zone keys, mounts, and developed reputations, then locked them out of the endgame zones for months. Imagine that happening to a guild of hundreds of long-time server snobs, and all orchestrated by the server's goofiest guild.
Imagine, for a moment, that there are no real safe zones, no Orgrimmar or Stormwind to go hide in, no personal instances for unimpeded development. And, finally, imagine that there was but one game server, and that the guild that got hit, while undeniably powerful, had a nasty history, tainted with near-certain collusion with the game admins. Many will not mourn the group's passing.
If MMO politics in this day can possibly be newsworthy in any respect, this is one such instance.
This is why you are dumb. IF you were in BoB then you deserve that every bit. I've never played the game, but obviously if you play a game where a single player can gain that much power, you are taking risks as it is and frankly I'm surprised something of this caliber didn't happen sooner.
