Kenny was the best drummer available, just not the right drummer.
As John said "I can finally look at the audience and find out how we are doing.".
Pete says having Zak in the chair is like like having Keith back. Zak, like Keith understands the soul of the music. But I find him much subtler than Keith. However, a herd of stampedeing elephants being strafed by F-18s, pursued by ground-to-air missles, in turn being chased by heat seeking ABMs would be subtler than Keith Moon.
Kenny is a good, solid drummer and even some of the songs he played in the studio with him were creative like "Cooks County". However, I just don't think he was ever right for The Who.
By the by, I felt Simon Phillips did a great job on the otherwise weak 1989 25th Anniversary tour- he was certainly kicking around in 1979 (his playing with Eno & 801 is some of my favorite of his from a few years before this)- he would have made a good go at it, methinks. You know Daltrey was unhappy about Jones because he actually said prior to the '89 tour "it's him or me"- so, yeah.
@naleyan Then he was REALLY fulla shit, because I saw him say in tons of interviews that the primary reason he joined the band was because he was such an enormous Who fan growing up.
It sounded like a good strategy: You'll never find another Keith Moon, so replace him with a drummer with a totally different personality and style. Jones is a good studio drummer, good at being the kind of drummer he is. He was what the rest of the band wanted at that time, and he acquitted himself admirably. But the strategy was wrong: they really did need another dazzling drummer, and Zak fills the void much better.
Gotta say-- Kenney Jones was a good mate and a really good drummer, (had to be to work with Steve Marriott!) but yeah, even Kenney said, both musically and particuarly emotionally, he hadn't realised what he was walking into after Moonie died. There was an interview where Roger said he could record a single with 6 drummers and not get as much sound as he could with just Moon. I think that's accurate. Keith Moon lives on-- and I thank the Who for these flicks to remind us of what he was!
listen kenney was i mod with the faces good drummer but not the force of nature of the loon but if we tried as hard as the who to find it again in our lives we could be heroes
Jones. Purely a straight ahead time keeper. There's missed opportunities throughout this song.

Jones was great in The Small Faces. And he did well in The Who, too.

Kenny was a great drummer for The Faces. Terrible for The Who. They needed an engine like Keith propelling them forward not a timekeeper.

This wasn't an audition. Kenney was already in the band. These were rehearsals for the upcoming tour.
