  • I enjoyed it, I'm self teaching my self how to use the long sword it's going well but not even close to your skill. I wield the long sword mostly with one hand however I do like to break into two handed strikes when I can. Personally I wanted to train with sword and shield but well don't have the equipment.

  • ridicule

  • So is that a noun or a verb?

  • Yeah, I foil fence. The steps in the vid are mostly passing steps-most longsword schools teach these as do Kendo practitioners. I also use gathering, compass and sloping footwork, but I do those on the lawn where there is more room. If you use only fencing footwork, i.e gathering steps, the entire back half of your body is locked out and you lose about half of your cuts-

  • nonono...your feet!!you can't move your legs in that way...you could hurt yourself...

  • How so?

  • sorry...it's just an advice...you move your arms very well...

    but..you fence??(me too)

by the way...in this vid you just walk but you should put a leg i front the ather..like fencing..but before the right and afther the left...I hope you understand!!

personaly I fence like sport and also in a medioeval historical group...it was just an advice!! ;)

  • Hi

Great video, nice practise. Just a point which might help, notwithstanding the footwork which you have already addressed, do not forget to extend your arms with each cut, not locked out but extended. Let the sword do the work, using the balance point to aid in the swing. I cannot be certain but you seem to have got this point already.

    Yours

    Col

  • How long have you been training for? Lots of chops, but never stuck the blade in.

  • 4 years last month. I also fence, which I'm a lot better at:)

  • This was very helpful to me. Can you post more?

  • Oh, I see. I must say that you move your sword like it is a federschwert. It seems so effortless, I can never move so quickly with mine. (bastard sword) (but I am a newbie)

  • The sword gets most of the credit for that. It's a Windlass Towton, and it's everything they say it is and more. Unfortunately, it's out of production, but there are still a few out there for sale. You can't go wrong with it, although I hear it's more of a finesse sword than a power cutter due to its rather light construction.

  • I just read a review for the Towton, seems to be good indeed, especially for the price. Mine is also a Windlass (due to the budget), its the 15th century longsword with a long ricasso. I like it a lot, although I don't really like the synthetic (not sure, but it feels like plastic) leather grip. But its still fine though, if the "leather" will crack or something, I will rewrap it nicely with wire.

  • I like your sword techniques, but I think the footwork isn't very good, you are basically "walking" instead of stepping. I think its better executing a few moves proper and "pronounced", instead of going just throught the motions. Instead of 123456... I would prefer; 1...2...3...4...5...6. At least when you are practising... but that's my opinion. Anyway, thanks the the video!

  • I don't normally walk it, but the cell phone camera I used made me "detune" my footwork. If I really get going, my stance drops and my steps get longer, which causes me to cover too much distance to fit the whole pad into the camera frame without putting it too far away to see anything-
