  • i just love him?

  • this is nice to know

  • wow i grew up in jersey an always thought JOE Bataan was Puerto Rican , ...we learn to infinity

  • That's cool...learning is always constant, takes a wise and smart person to know that. I'm Filipino and I only learn of Joey Bataan recently...

  • Wow!!! he is a fantastic singer. I remember this type of music when I was little and my bigh brother and sis were teenagers. I couldn't wait to be able to do what they could do. That time never came. Ahh the memories.

  • yes Joe is a hell of a singer, but his songs always related to life on the streets the way it was......and to a certain extent how it is still is in urban america. I grew up on 113th St in NYC and left in 1970 when I was in the marines. Even in Vietnam we still listene to "Symphony Sid" a local NYC DJ on shortwave radios, for us Puerto Ricans it was a piece of home!

  • whattup AFROPINOY IS HERE

  • Yes, hehe, Mr. BAH-TAH-AHN is an Afro-Pinoy. ;)

  • I can remember back in Junior High school, now it's called middle school in 1966. We use to play Joe Bataan records everyday. Many of us thought he was Puerto Rican. He sang and spoke spanish so very well, and one of my friends told us all he is an Afro-filipino. Of course we were blown away, we all started talking about it and came to realized- if someone took the time and effort to learn our language and our culture he was worth listening to. And we became very big fans ever since.

  • This is not the original version. The original version is on Joe Bataan's Gypsy Woman album (1967)

  • Actually, you're right. I got a hold of a copy of "Gypsy Woman" a couple of months ago, and it had the original version, only I had never heard it before. I forgot to edit the page. Thanks.

  • Frankey,

As a MAJOR fan of Joe Bataan,

I must provide for you the following lyrical correction

    2nd Verse:

    "Exclusive night clubs

Are OUT OF STYLE WITH ME

'Cause, I don't associate, with high society..."

And it was apparently obvious that this piece meant a lot to Joe since he renditioned it THREE TIMES in three completely different incarnations from 1967 to 1975.

Indeed, Joe Bataan is the embodiment of the city, the Heartbeat of the Barrio, the King of Latin Soul.

    > Professor DLC

  • Everybody's doin' it--Taft, Franklyn

    Everybody's doin' it--Monroe, Central...

    Viet Nam Too!

Opening to "Riot" mentions 3 Bronx High Schools. We swore we were famous!!!

  • i love his pacing and timing as a vocalist, he let's the note hang there and drip

  • OMG!I love this song!I was 5 years old when this came out.I played his songs on my drums as a teenager. This album is a classic.also notice this is Fania records at the begining.

  • Joe's real. and I'll always appreciate the fact that he always recognizes his Filipino side. Mabuhay Joe.

  • The great thing about Bataan is that he sang salsa style with a mix of doowop as he personalized his own latin blues of the era and still transmits that soul into ones bones. Thanks for sharing his music. Loved it.

  • @Saborsabor12 nicely put. joe bataan's music perfectly captures that era

  • a classic, Joe never got the thunder he should have....met him a few time, a wonderful man...great to hear.....

  • THIS SONG IS SO TRUE!!! YEAH BABY

  • I love ordinary guys they keep it real

  • joe bataan has a unique voice.this reminds me of growing up in harlem in the 70's.

  • My favorite track by Joe. For some reason I don't really like the other version of this. Thank you for posting this!

  • Thanks for posting. Joe Bataan is one of the greatest soul singers!

  • "The Rhythem Revue" with Felix Hernandez, WBGO 88.3 FM, Saturdays, 8AM-2PM.

  • yes sir, that's where I would check it out on

  • Classic Soul and R&B is a very special study. There are many obscure, long forgotten artists, who never got their due. It all goes so much deeper than Motown. Two of my favorite artists are Bobby Womack and Johnnie Taylor.

  • you're the best ordinary guy I know..
