So many people threw out there none cable ready tv sets, or sold them at yard sales for 5.00 . when all you have to do is hook it up to a vhs or dvd player with a remote and you get cable , and have a remote for a tv that had none. I have a endless supply or good working color portable's to last me. Most of them are 45 watts . And the picture quality is great . With prices from 2.00 to 5.00 i can afford to throw the ones out that stop working, but they havent stopped yet !
They better not do this to radio stations. Its fun to hear stations from another area in a clear day. Some people in Orange County can hear radio stations from San Diego.
"5-channel surround sound" like in concerts (300 kbit /s stream), or 7 different programs per station. Therefore digital radio like digital television will give us a lot more variety.
It's called DXing and there's a whole subculture devoted to it, a little like shortwave or ham radio, or train aficionados. At night the airwaves used to light up with signals from all over North & South America.
When I used to live in Pomona with a rooftop antenna I use to get tv reception all the way from San Diego. I use to see channel XETV Fox 6, XEWT 12 Televisa, KUSI 51, KSWB 5/69, and the San Diego CBS. I also use to get a couple of channels from Ventura and Santa Barbara.
We have digital TV broadcasting in many regions of Germany as well, it's called DVB-T over here. You can have 20+ channels and a receiver can be as small as a USB stick with a small antenna attached to it. It's therefore called "everywhere TV".

They will.
The UK is planning to turn-off analog radio in 2018 (tentative date), and I'm sure the U.S. will do the same.
With pure digital FM stations can send 50channel surround sound, or upto 7 different channels per station.
AM can send CD quality sound.
