They are mostly made of sisal, and many third world countries, such as Madagasgar have knocked down their forests to grow the firbre that these 'green' bags are made of. Lemurs (those cute little mammals) are loosing habitat. Two species have become extinct. Green bags are a great idea, but they need to be manufactured responsibly, not just cheaply.

Growing the plants that are used in making these bags takes place in third world countries, who clear land and grow sisal. They are clearing millions of acres of land and destroying the habitat of thousands of animals just so we can feel good about taking our shopping home. They are a great idea but their production leaves much to be desired.

@verticalsmurf I think what the other person was getting at was that yes, things unfortunately are getting cleared away etc to produce the 'green' bags but the fact is a lot less need to be thrown away than plastic, so in that respect it is a better thing.I don't know whether, in the long run what we're doing will make a difference. I work at a supermarket and know that over half the customers forget their bags so buy plastic ones from us. So we're still producing them(bad). and chucking them

@84katieh Can you answer something for me off topic? (No offence intended, just curious) I used to be a checkout chick 15 years ago. Back then we used to fill the bags, we would mix heavy and light items eg cans on the bottom, chip packets on top to fill the space. Now when I go shopping, it seems to be 3 cans to a bag & a separate bag for chips, one bag for a sealed box of washing detergent, etc. The way the are being filled now seems wasteful. What's going on? Why aren't the bags being filled?

@verticalsmurf I guess it's all about who's packing and if they're good at their job. The key thing is just to simply ask the customer if you can fill the bags. (Like you explained you did.) Communication works wonders. Mind you I work in South Australia and I often forget we're the only state that does not, in any large store provide bags for free. About 15 cents gets you heavy duty plastic which is reusable and we have bins people can recycle them in when they get too shabby. Yeah anyway,

While taking canvas bags to the supermarket is a good idea, few people would think it warrants a rock anthem, let alone a rock anthem with background singers, audience call-and-response, trumpet solo, "balloon drop", fireworks, and ripping open your shirt. The humor is the discrepancy between the ostentation of the performance and the relatively minor action it's prompting.
