So he took a traditional Greek song and turned it into a California dream...the man is a guitar genius. As for the Black Eyed Peas, they were flattering him and Miserlou. Stop this bickering. No one can touch Dick Dale.
@girlycajun Ha yes indeed, I totally agree with you. He may have used the MELODY of a traditional Greek song, he still turned it into a kickass guitar song, aka Dick Dale's song. The difference between the traditional song and DD at the one hand, and between DD and BEP on the other had is that DD created a new unique song, based on a traditional song, and BEP just used this exact same song ... slight difference.
Woow...!!!
The man is in his seventies and at the time of this video was getting treatments for cancer. Hope he beat it, that was three years ago. I agree by the way with one of the comments. It would have been fascinating to hear the Black Eyed Peas do "Miserlou" in the traditional Greek way, with maybe some hip hop thrown in, maybe a little bit of Middle East flavor too. They could have made it kickin'
@margolou2010 I was in touch with Dick during his cancer treatments.I was going thru the exact same thing-we helped each other out.He is one of the most down to earth persons I,ve ever dealt with.I think he,s still having some problems but nothins ever gonna keep him off the stage.
Yeah, Dick Dale didn´t wrote this song so Black Eyed peas didn´t too, Dick Dale may be play it for make him popular, Black eyed peas too, But man! Dick Dale is a Musician of a golden era, Black Eyed Peas PLays over play back and doubled recorded voices. They may be fortuned if knows one basic musical scales C D E F G A B. The levels exist.

It was over fifteen years ago, but this song was an archaeological find when it was in Pulp Fiction. Now it's been resurrected again! Plus they did a bit of Malaguena in the middle.
Dick Dale Hats off from a Greek who loves his Countrys music, you have done Justice to this music, you have made many dance to the beat of Greek Music that had no Idea they
Awesome sound. Now this is the real surf sound. The guys had long hair, the girls had short skirts and were blonde. And the surf boards were big. It was a cool time.
MIsirlou belongs to the Greek songs called as rebetika. Misirlou mean a woman from Egypt. The real tempo is zeibekiko which mean 9/8 slowly. The first one who played this song was an artist or rebetiko Michael Patrinos in Athens in 1927. Firstly recorded in Greece around 1930 from Patrinos who re-recorded it in 1931 in N. York. In 1941 a Greek - American musician Nick Roubanis made a jazz instrumental version. In 1960 Dick Dale made his own version of this song.
It's a greek zembekiko. No one knows the original artist, but many believe it was an armenian or turkish refugee in greece. Dick Dale made it famous in America
I met him when I was a bouncer at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix Az. He did not play but he gave me a schooling. I did not realize he was the soul behind some of the best surf rock ever, and in my ignorance I kinda disrespected him, till he told me who he was. That was back around 1995. I hope he understood how sincere my apology was.
Why would he even quote the Black Eyed Peas? That song was so terrible (their version) they just blatantly used it so it would sound good hence getting them more popularity. Bands that rely on other music to gain fame fail, but in the end they still get away with it (it's especially sad when the original artist allows them to do such a thing).
But Dick Dale didn't write this song. It's actually a traditional Greek folk song that is well over one hundred years old. He may have made it popular, but he didn't create it. I don't think he even technically owns the rights to it, but since the original writer is more than likely long since dead, asking permission to use it is kind of moot.
Basically my point is that the Black Eyed Peas may have used this song to gain fans and/or popularity, but so did Dick Dale.
@AmarisGrey Yes, but Dick Dale is the father of "surf style". Why didn't the black eyed p.'s make a new version, they're version, or why didn't they use the original greek version, now that would have been interesting :)))). Stop f....g steeling and be creative for goodnes sake, make you're own music, and then you will be appreciated.
back in the day, this guy used to like to blow up Freddy Fender's amps, so Freddy went back to the think tank just for Dick Dale and made him a stronger amp called the Showman amp, and 15" JBL D-15" speaker he played so loud that Guitar player magazine called him the father of heavy metal,,, I may have worked at his club for a summer, but I had to look that one up, lol thanks for the share
This is a Greek (rebetiko) song, was first performed by the Michalis Patrinos rebetiko band in Athens, Greece in 1927. Dick Dale has not even born then.
actually hes not mocking it's more like a respect thing he considers it a honor that they thought enough of his song to use it for pump it but your right the black eyed peas is why he says pump it
Misirlous is a greek word.. it means an Egyption Woman..
the song was originally composed as a zeibekiko (zembekiko), the original composer is unknown, however it is certain he was Greek. the song was first performed by Michalis Patrino in 1972.. long before the frickin electric guitar..
misirlou is an original greek song which has been modified over a period of almost 100 years, including added lyrics, the version for pulp fiction etc.
1972- before the electric Guitar? So then what was that thing that Elvis and The Beatles played?
Also, if it means 'Egyptian Woman' then it does also mean 'someone from Egpyt', it's just more specific. Don't jump on him for not knowing the translation of a relatively obscure song.
twat.. i clearly made a second comment to tidy up my typos, trying reading next time, and don't tell me about a translation from my own language when you don't even speak it.
and someone from egypt, and egyptian are not the same thing.. now you just look like a muppet.
I'm sorry I didn't scour the comments to make sure you had corrected yourself, but my point still stands. An Egyptian woman is still someone from Egypt, and either way its not such a difference that it really matters.
I didn't tell you about the translation, I told you about the difference between the translations, which, when it comes to English, isn't much.
Is your point so weak that you need to defer to baseless insults?
Yes, you originally said that, and then you told me that ,"and someone from egypt, and egyptian are not the same thing.. now you just look like a muppet." They very well could be the same thing, and I really don't think I look anything like a muppet.
Get off your case? I corrected you and then you started insulting me.
And I wouldn't say your argument is weak, I'd say you don't have one. You nitpicked an insignifant detail and then insulted someone for calling you out on it.
That's an even weaker argument. "I don't have a point anymore but I refuse to apologize for calling you a twat and a muppet. You should just stop arguing."
It is indeed very simple, and it makes no sense. I will stop arguing with you when you concede that you shouldn't have insulted me and that you will stop nitpicking through every comment and 'correcting' every minor detail. There is a video of the original Greek version, and I'm sure your nitpicking would be appreciated more there.
wooow, just wow... since you don't understand i'll make it plain..
i was backing someone up who made a point of the song being greek, however people were arguing back, the comment you are arguing is about was because i made a simple point of correcting someones translation, however you decide for whatever reason to start arguing about, when you don't even think the argument is valid...
and i have nothing to apologise for, even if i did, i have no need to make a point if i dont want to.
You weren't backing up anyone, you were correcting a few mistakes people made. In your haste you made some mistakes yourself, which you corrected with a different comment (rather than with a reply to the comment you were correcting). I corrected one of your already-corrected mistakes and told you that the difference between 'an egyptian woman' and 'someone from Egpyt' is insignificant.
Then you called me a twat. I don't think it was entirely justified.
It is called the old master pro teaching the young kid how to play the song correctly! He should appreciate it - lucky son - to have a Dad like that! I am in awe of Dick Dale!!! What a fabulous career he has had and is still going!
nobody stole from anybody when fergie first asked dick if they could add words to it for the pump it version he was very honored that they wanted to use his music
I dont get it... its not the miserlou that i like to listen to.... it doesnt have the voice at the beginning that says... hey- hey- HEY!... what is that if its not this? the guitar sounds the same as this
Actually, even though he got the idea to play it rock-style, it's actually and adaptation of a popular greek song. There are other, non-rock versions of it on youtube, if you want to check.
black eyed peas didn't steal anything Fergie asked Dick if they could add words to the song not knowing originally there were already words to it and Dick said yeah and was honored they wanted to do that and got a lot of money for it too it's as simple as that
no they didn't Fergie asked Dick if they could put words to the song not knowing originally there were already words to it and Dick was honored they wanted to and said yes and they paid him for the rights to the music
Before that, everyone just called it the Pulp Fiction song.
I'm just glad to see Dick Dale making money without having ever signed the rights over to a label. If he didn't own this song, he wouldn't be nearly as successful.
Dick Dale is truly one of the best guitarists I have ever seen and heard of and I hope he is doing great after his surgery..heard what happened...can't wait to see him playin again..hey Dick check out my video...just type collin welch on youtube and youll see me doin miserlou and pipeline...and all u other viewers come see my video...Good Luck Dick..
I wouldn't be surprised. Ever see him live? Holy crap. He'll stay until he's answered every last question, and talked to everyone that wanted to talk to him. Class act.
as many of you may already know Dick is currently recovering from cancer and recently had a infection inside from when the tumor got cut out which caused the doctors to have to open him back up clean out the infection and stitch him back up again but last sunday I was with Dick at the Surfing Museum in Huntington Beach and he is doing very well and should be back to 100% in A short amount of time and make a full recovery
He will he is still in a lot of pain from the surgery and radiation burns but he will be back to normal and up on stage doing what he loves to do as soon as he feels good enough to do so
i hope it goes well! i have seen many people make a full recovery and then it will return at a later date to a differant body part or the same area. best wishes! i hope all goes well!
this is actually the 2nd time he has had rectal cancer he had it in the mid 60's which is why he went from setting and breaking attendance records every place he played at to basically vanishing from the public completely right as he was hitting his peak in popularity. Back then the doctors gave him 3 months to live at the time which is why the words you will never hear surf music again are in the middle of the Jimi Hendrix song 3rd Stone From the Sun it was a tribute to Dick
wow i didnt know that thankyou! funny, he outlived hendrixs by far. jimmy never saw the real payout from his work, and neither did morrison. but i know the doors and the hendrix foundation, shure love them two guys! strange ending!
he did a re dedication of this song to Jimi in 96 on his calling up spirits cd with the words Jimi I'm still here wish you were at the start of the song and currently a medley of amazing grace and 3rd stone from the sun is played at the end of all his shows that is a tribute to his friend Scotty who died 6 years ago from muscular dystrophy at 22 you can see him playing it on here just type in Dick Dale 3rd stone from the sun
yep the reason why he blew up all those speakers and amps was because that was part of the process of Leo Fender building speakers and amps to Dicks specifications which ended up leading to the JBL Speakers and Duel Showman Amplifier which peaked at 180 watts which is how big stadium and arena concerts started because the most powerful thing around before that only went up too about 20-30 watts
yep Jimi met Dick at A South Pasadena bar where he played backup for Little Richard at the time and went to go watch Dicks shows at the Ballroom in Balboa and they both played right handed guitars left handed but like you said Jimi switched his strings around and Dick kept everything the way it was and turned his guitar upside down and backwards and reversed everything in his head so what's down is up and up is down
So he took a traditional Greek song and turned it into a California dream...the man is a guitar genius. As for the Black Eyed Peas, they were flattering him and Miserlou. Stop this bickering. No one can touch Dick Dale.

It means "Someone who comes from Egypt".
The original version is from Egypt. At the era of the Ottoman Empire.
Thats the reality, however, you like it or not. Do you want a couple of "turkish coffee"? :D
i respect the greek version. It sounds really good.
DenizliCalcio 3 years ago
The original is not egyptian. the original composer was either greek or a turkish refugee to greece
also yes in turkish it is spelt misirli, which is of course derrived from greek.
and turkish coffee is arabic coffee with a different name and made by turkish person XD

just to tidy up my last comment and to correct typos:
it was first performed in 1927.
and zembekiko is a traditional greek dance.
also it is possible, however unlikely, that the original composer may have been a turkish refugee. though as i said, it's very unlikely

You're thinking of the "Black Eyed Peas" remix called "Pump It." This is the original though. It's better IMCO (In My Correct Opinion)

Actually, even though he got the idea to play it rock-style, it's actually and adaptation of a popular greek song. There are other, non-rock versions of it on youtube, if you want to check.

NO!!! PUMP IT IS MISIRLOU, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND! Dick dale made it first and Black eyed peas stole it
rallerudenw 3 years ago 3
black eyed peas didn't steal anything Fergie asked Dick if they could add words to the song not knowing originally there were already words to it and Dick said yeah and was honored they wanted to do that and got a lot of money for it too it's as simple as that

And they say it's better to tremolo pick from the wrist, I can only tremolo pick the way he can, not as good, but alike.

i hate how everyone thinks this song is made by the black eyed peas or watever
greenbeaner69 3 years ago 8
Before that, everyone just called it the Pulp Fiction song.
I'm just glad to see Dick Dale making money without having ever signed the rights over to a label. If he didn't own this song, he wouldn't be nearly as successful.

I wouldn't be surprised. Ever see him live? Holy crap. He'll stay until he's answered every last question, and talked to everyone that wanted to talk to him. Class act.

as many of you may already know Dick is currently recovering from cancer and recently had a infection inside from when the tumor got cut out which caused the doctors to have to open him back up clean out the infection and stitch him back up again but last sunday I was with Dick at the Surfing Museum in Huntington Beach and he is doing very well and should be back to 100% in A short amount of time and make a full recovery
predatortap 3 years ago 3
i hope he makes a full recovery and can keep on playing!
patrick95240 3 years ago 3
He will he is still in a lot of pain from the surgery and radiation burns but he will be back to normal and up on stage doing what he loves to do as soon as he feels good enough to do so
predatortap 3 years ago
i hope it goes well! i have seen many people make a full recovery and then it will return at a later date to a differant body part or the same area. best wishes! i hope all goes well!
patrick95240 3 years ago
this is actually the 2nd time he has had rectal cancer he had it in the mid 60's which is why he went from setting and breaking attendance records every place he played at to basically vanishing from the public completely right as he was hitting his peak in popularity. Back then the doctors gave him 3 months to live at the time which is why the words you will never hear surf music again are in the middle of the Jimi Hendrix song 3rd Stone From the Sun it was a tribute to Dick
predatortap 3 years ago
wow i didnt know that thankyou! funny, he outlived hendrixs by far. jimmy never saw the real payout from his work, and neither did morrison. but i know the doors and the hendrix foundation, shure love them two guys! strange ending!
patrick95240 3 years ago
he did a re dedication of this song to Jimi in 96 on his calling up spirits cd with the words Jimi I'm still here wish you were at the start of the song and currently a medley of amazing grace and 3rd stone from the sun is played at the end of all his shows that is a tribute to his friend Scotty who died 6 years ago from muscular dystrophy at 22 you can see him playing it on here just type in Dick Dale 3rd stone from the sun

hendrix restrung his right hand guitar but dale didnt restring. that is what is most amazing about him.
CoolWhipDude 3 years ago
that maybe...
Or... the fact that he blew up all his amps in the early days xD
koekjedrbijAAA 3 years ago
yep the reason why he blew up all those speakers and amps was because that was part of the process of Leo Fender building speakers and amps to Dicks specifications which ended up leading to the JBL Speakers and Duel Showman Amplifier which peaked at 180 watts which is how big stadium and arena concerts started because the most powerful thing around before that only went up too about 20-30 watts
predatortap 3 years ago
yep Jimi met Dick at A South Pasadena bar where he played backup for Little Richard at the time and went to go watch Dicks shows at the Ballroom in Balboa and they both played right handed guitars left handed but like you said Jimi switched his strings around and Dick kept everything the way it was and turned his guitar upside down and backwards and reversed everything in his head so what's down is up and up is down
predatortap 3 years ago
I saw that little peckerhead and his dad at Ventura theatre. He fuckin' rocks on Geetar and the drums. And has a Fender named after him.
