Oh, now I remember - I was talking about playing by ear. It helps to know intervals and scales if you want to learn a piece by ear.

Classical pieces can sometime have parts that are hard to remember by heart, but if you understand the pattern behind them you don't have to memorize everything and you can easily guess how most of the part goes just by detecting such patterns.
