I agree with the view expressed in your first paragraph, but not the second. Our gun laws are not outrageously strict. In fact, pro-Second Amendment sentiment is rising rapidly in the US, and it is very likely we will see more relaxation of gun laws very soon.
It's really sad that a society needs a second amendment on firearms, It shows society is in decay if you can't even trust your fellow citizens and need a gun to protect you from your own people.
