in the southern hemisphere the sun would be in the north not the south. when he talks about the trees thicker branches pointing south they would be pointing north if the tree was below the equator.

Mears is better for seeing what you could realistically do in the wilds and he teaches a lot of useful things.
I prefer Mears but I like Bear too for the reasons above, and don't see why they should be versus each other.
