This is just fantasic. I wished they could have performed this and others together in their earlier years. Still great voices and they compliment each other.
How long must we wait until this recital is out on DVD??? True, each of them took turns to vocally tred into unfamiliar waters, but so what if Price's coloratura isn't as fleet as Joan's? For a "juicy lyric" (as she called herself), the B section of the Handel and those floated notes are emotionally devastating from their ethereal quality. And Horne also got to do what she does best: her trills were superb. It was a very wise choice of repertoire to show off both singers' strengths.
Price in unfamiliar coloratura terrain here, but she does surprisingly well. Not as heavy as i've heard her attempt previously in coloratura arias (Sempre Libera for example).
Stunning!! I didn't catch this back then. Too bad! Thanx so much for posting it. Price is amazing no matter what the venue or medium, but Horne really needed to be heard live to fully "get" her --like so many other gr8 opera singers (singers for the theatre, not the mike).
Anyone has listened the version of Vivica Genaux and a soprano?i forgot her...it was far more fast than this...i don't know whether it's better to sing this duet fast or slow...
Great singing, but what was Jackie Horne thinking when she got dressed that night? It hardly matters as she is one of the loveliest and funniest singers I have ever shared the stage with. Her Amneris in Dallas was one for the ages.
I got to hear Leontyne Price & Marilyn Horne sing in person. I got to meet Leontyne Price. I told her that she was such an inspiration to me b/c she was a southerner. She said, "The Southerner's are the best and that I was very pretty." Thank you so much coloraturafan2 for putting this on. This is the first time I ever got to hear them sing together.
That's one of the few times I see the Mezzo's piece is prettier than the Soprano's one in a duet. :) Loved Marilyn's coloratures and love Leontyne timbre too. :D
I've never heard Leontyne sing Handel before; it was quite good. This is such a touching rendition of this duet. Normally the duet is so forceful and fiery, but it's nice to hear slowed down and sung with an infinitely larger degree of pathos. Brava Leontyne, and a huge brava to Marilyn.
This is a great duet. Liza Sobel is singing the Marilyn Horne (Rinaldo) part in her college's opera this spring. Look up Liza Sobel's self composed songs on Youtube. More recent songs will be added this summer.
Handel would have given his eye teeth to have been in the presence of Leontyne Price and to have written for her. Every time I hear her Handel she places me directly in heaven. This is the greatest concert of two ladies ever, a battle of voices on the friendliest terms. The Norma duet and the Aida confrontation are phenomenal revelations! O my goodness! Price's Pace Pace mio Dio stopped the show - the house just fell in!
I saw the original live telecast back in the '80s and have only the LP recordings of the event. I have not seen the video of her Pace Pace either. I hope it shows up someday on YouTube. Also Marilyn's Vivi Tirrano! which was a lot of fun too.
Price doesn't quite have the coloratura of Horne, but she makes up for it with her full, rich, and effortless tone. They both perform this beautifully.
this video is sublime....damn fach!!! I am so tired of hearing anemic voice sing handel. As an ardent Price fan and Horner...this is spine tingling!!! Thanks for posting!!!
have to concur on the anemic voices being tiresome. this is great singing and sublime music. as a countertenor of the more 'dramatic' variety it makes me very very happy indeed to hear this gorgeous interpretation of this duet.
the dramatic weight of their voices complement eachother well, too often Horne was paired with sopranos that were too light to really work well with how spectacularly powerful a mezzo she was.
@skitzo429 Powerful?? Horne??? She had at best a medium-sized voice and it was to her everlasting credit that she was able to be dramatic enough to fool people into thinking that incredible voice was large or powerful. "Size isn't everything", but her other talents were gigantic...
Here I sit with tears streaming down my face, my heart pounding. Marilyn "Jackie" Horne and Leontyne Price, two of the greatest voices in all of recorded opera history! Can one get any closer to heaven?! -M.T.
i'm a big Handel fan...hence the name...and fan of Horne...to hear her paired with Price brings me shear delight!!!i actually cried too...all the time...handel was a wonderful man and i'd love to conduct one of his complete works (i'm 18 and i've sung, played, and conducted one of his pieces)...i'd probably end up like him and die before it is over (bless him) but i went out like a troop.
Thanks for the words of empathy! Thought I might've exaggerated a month ago. No, came back and started choking up all over again. I am 77, have never given up on anything worthwhile, and believe you will achieve your conducting goals and dreams long before the 59 years to my age. Go for it!
thank you and i hope to do the same...that is the duty of art...to make the viewer enjoy and show emotion. and that is what you did...and you did right. i wouldn't understand if someone had a dry eye after this performance. you are a passionate art lover like myself. Handel is quoted saying "I should be sorry if i only entertained the audience, I only wish to make them better." and he still does that.
You are so correct, and you also heard correctly. Her "Pace" from this concert is not only the best that she ever sang, but also the best anyone has ever sung it, that I've heard.
I attended this concert at the Met. It was the thrill of a lifetime. Unforunately, no DVD or CD in print. I've searched the world over for both via the Internet. What a loss for all of us.
This is just fantasic. I wished they could have performed this and others together in their earlier years. Still great voices and they compliment each other.
