I literally just did this yesterday with a 8lb cat. I was using some shitty ass ezbraid spiderwire 15 lb test (dont get it! 3rd day i used it the line snapped) and i went to set the hook and before my rod even bent the line snapped so i jumped into the river and pulled him to me floatin down stream, one of the best times ive ever had fishing!

It could have been frayed, or there could have been a knot in it, or he could have just had reel problems...

There are these things in the water sometimes, i think that people call them rocks. Rocks vs fishing line equals frayed line making it weaker at certain spots therefore breaking at less pressure than the rest of the line.
