I agree that Internet is not easily available like in north America but there is 3 ISP companies in Haiti and they provide Internet services for those who can afford it, check your facts before making false statements. I went to the Dominican Republic to work with Haitian schoolchildren (yes, yes it was awesome). I would add that a huge portion of today's problem resides in the fact that after the war and massacre that happened between the DR and Haiti the DR grew extremely xeonophobic and greatly increased thier racist view of Spanish (white) supremacy against dark skinned people. The effect being DR coorp are able to cheat and hire Haitians for dirt without either gov protesting, thus screwing Haiti further.
You forgot pollution. The very little water in Haiti is very dirty and harmful because people dump there trash anywhere because their government sucks. Of course, people in Dominican Republic dump there trash everywhere too, but I notice that they put effort into throwing it in the trash cans, but the Sanitation department kinda throws all that in landfills. Im living in D.R., I see this stuff all the time (especially in poor areas).

Another environmental reason I was taught is their land management. Haitians cut down all their trees, but they ran out of room. They couldn't chop down any more trees, because there weren't many more. The lack of roots caused the soil to erode, so crops could not be grown.

I just got home about an hour ago from my annual medical mission to the Dominican Republic...both Haiti and the DR are in desperate need of help. Haiti is also not helped by the fact that every few months people will just disappear. I went to a world slavery exhibition during the anniversary of the absolution of slavery in the UK and Haiti is one of the most exploited countries in the world in terms of slavery. This slavery mainly comes in the form of people from the Dominican Republic just taking people from Haiti and keeping them enslaved. We say slavery was abolished but it wasn't. Surely that can't be helping?

I just got home about an hour ago from my annual medical mission to the Dominican Republic...both Haiti and the DR are in desperate need of help. Haiti's situation is awful, but so is the situation in the DR, because people tend to see the tiny fraction of resorts/tourist areas and not the poverty that is rampant throughout the rest of the country.

Also that they had to pay France off for property loss (i.e. slaves) with 90 million francs. They finally finished paying France in 1947, as in only 64 years ago, which is really close to now compared to when Haiti actually gained independence (186 years ago). Took them 122 years to pay off their debt.

Actually the reason Haiti is so bad off to this day is because of a rebellion by the slaves on Haiti. This frightened the rest of the Caribbean and the Americas that their slaves would lead rebellions in their colonies. Resulting from the exclusion of Haiti from all trade in the America's, forcing Haiti into financial turmoil.

I know people like to blame others for bad things, and I can as well, but there are things Haiti can overcome.
Geography/weather. Yes, the lack of rain can hamper development. But there are desert nations like Israel (with only the Jordan river and surrounded by people who want to kill them) that does very well in farming.
Colonialism: that's over, only dictators and thugs running the place, as you say.
Freedom: They have this now, and support of the US. They just need to figure it out.
