One of the best moments of my life was singing an evensong as part of a guest choir in St Paul's and doing this setting. Cheeky, but oh my life it was one of the most amazing experiences!
Howells had a great knack for finding great moments in a lushly harmonized piece for the choir to sing a passage in unison, And never cheesy like John Rutter. It's often rather haunting!
It definitely sounds like there's a mistake in the organ pedal part near the very end - when the trebles sing 'withOUT . . .' Sounds like B flat and A flat were played together and then sorted out to A flat alone. Simply flawless apart from that, though. Best music ever.
And it's not the early 80's recording - it's from 1988, John Scott directing, Christopher Dearnley playing the organ. Hyperion. (You can tell conclusively that this is the recording because it has the pedal mistake in it
From what commercial recording did you borrow this? I would like to purchase it. Thanks.

have never noticed the pedal mistake, and this recording has never been bettered. One of my desert island disks (as it is a double CD!)

Sorry - trebles aren't singing 'without' - they're singing 'amen.' 4 measures from the end. Now I'll shut up.

It's a poncy word for small! Literally, it means scanty.

Where is the Mag? When was this recording made? as there is a exiguous possibility that I am singing treble in it!

I think this may be the version recorded by Hyperion in the early 1980's - if it is, the catalogue number is Hyperion Dyad CD22038.

The Gloria is the equal of ANY other piece of music: overpowering, overwhelming and touching on the divine.
