Hi. I use to play only piano, so I am new in the digital synthe world and I bought this synthe recently and I'd like to know if there is a training course or other learning options of how to use this machine. I just have the operator manual and few demos I found in youtube. Thanks ReddevilNumber10 or who ever answer this question.
@Itlfrari, my Sweetwater rep suggested the reason you are having problems with your Yamaha S70XS, is that you have a defective unit, did you try and return it? Thank's!
I don't think this guy actually played a full song on it because I have an S70XS and I would not recommend it to anyone, poor sound, drops notes, gets lost. Oh and has terrible harmonics on the c#, D and D# keys in the s6 sample 2 octaves below middle C.
Hey everyone I was hoping someone could help me out with a question please?
I am very interested in buying one of these keyboards, however, whilst I know that it has DAW functionality with Cubase, does it also work with Avid Pro Tools? And can you use it as a MIDI controller for any kind of MIDI recording with computer, such as if I was writing a score in Sibelius?
Thanks in advance, any help would be much appreciated :)
Have had my S90ES for several years...and as good as that is...the S90XS sounds very cool indeed...Will have to check it out...However the price is rather steep...I am told..
Can anyone recommend a keyboard that can cover my needs? I play in a jazz duo with a drummer, and no bass-player; I also play solo on thursdays. The styles that I play are jazz, pop, rock, and latin.
@Pianoui I think you're mixing up elements and voices. While you can only layer two full voices, each voice can have up to 8 so-called elements. In this regard the Motif XS has the same capabilities as the Fantom G or X.
Yamaha Rocks.... And so does Mr.Bert Smorenburg! You are really a perfect performer..... S70Xs has everything required for live performance as well as studio recording..... So, its just too complete to hunt for other workstations.....
Does somebody know where I can download the midi file that he plays. It's "vreemde handen" by Marco Borsato. Or does someone have it and could send it to me?
Just bought the s90xs two days ago. I'm extremely impressed!!! I owned a Yamaha C7 grand piano and the new S6 piano reminds me of that. How does this compare to a Roland RD though? I am considering getting the RD700GX, but this is cheaper, so I'm wondering if it's better too? 1 thing I like about yamahas is the separate modulator..I dont know why Roland decided they needed to put it together with the pitch bend...
THEY ALWAYS EXAGGERATE factory sounds with things we wouldnt use.... yes they over overmoduated. and over 'tremelo'd.... just go in a change them. dont go by factory sounds they ALWAYS suck....i wish they didnt have to make you work so hard to get the sound you want....i dont care if this piano is 10,000mb... its not great.. im taking IVORY onstage.... but the synth is VERY good...and performance patches have endless possibilies. tweak a couple of grand piano's and layer them in a multi.

First and formost i bought this to be my live performance piano/electric piano. I was excited about the 76 note real action option. What did they do to my beloved vintage 74 rhodes sound? My original motif patch sounds so much better. They over modulate effect. Is ther a way to get the s90es piano sample into this board, it needs it........
I absolutely love my s9xs... for those who are complaining about fill-ins... go back to your Casio... my question is... I have a great "live" drummer who I gig with. hey mysticradio! i should have listened to you and you to yourself as well ... haha. i got it last week and i'm not too happy with it. i bought it for playing piano in the first place and there is not a single piano voice that is really fun to play. i can't explain what it is, it just doesn't feel right, depending what you are playing it's more or less bad (or at least not good). you are right with the EQ thing, you always feel the need to tweak something. i had a look a an RD-700 GX today ...
i'm not really sure about the RD yet, so I will have a closer look the next days at a store in cologne, but at a first glance i would say it feels and sounds better. the keyboard is better anyway, and the pianos also felt better to play. there was a problem around a certain range, but maybe that's the headphones, so i will use my own one the next time.
by the way: the worst keyboard would sound great under the influence of Bert Smorenburg, so before spending 2.300 euros first test it yourself!
haha...dude dont complain about the little screen...even tho it would of been way better with a bigger one..(yamaha*hint,hint*) the sound quality is what matters and as i see it it is very nice. IMO :)
and i have a hard time reading the little screen...... AND I PAID 900 MORE after selling the ES.. i should have listened to myself. and bought the XS rack and kept the Es...... now im stuck
what the %$#@ ???????? i got the S90xs..... and this new S6 is BOXY, MID-NASALLY..... i couldnt beleive it... so far in headphones. My S90ES piano had MUCH more spank and intelligebility.... what did they do? I'll let you know when i put it though speakers
ahhhhhhh screw it... i'll buy an S70xs...... but seems yamaha doesnt listen to its customer base... BIG SHOT CORPORATION doesnt need to listen I suppose
i got an email from SKB .. and the longest case they make is 57'' long..... and the S90xs is 58'' .. what are we to to besides buy the S70xs... why doesnt yamaha make a frickin case for this if they are going to go oversized..... always something
is it me... or is yamaha making these S series longer and longer..... its soooo hard to find a case for these things that arent like 500 dollars... why dont they frickin make cases for these oversized monsters. gawd.
its only updated as far as the S6 'aged wood'' piano
other than that its a motif xs buts. Makes sense a stage piano has the best piano sample... cause the piano on motif is good enough for workstation demos' and live. you see LOTS of yammy motifs on tv.
the thing i like about the XS is its SUPPOSED to have multi samples that you can play real light passages. Not just softer velocities of HARD HIT samples.
Every time they say they come up with a new piano...i dont hear leaps and bounds difference. but i will surely test one out.
well...... when you layer on these machines you lose polyphony fast. Especially if you play piano and do an arpeggio with your sustain down... there is cut off points.
The S90XS will be the same. but with 128 on the ES and 128 on the rack.. you have double the power.... and will sound way more HUGE than one synth. You can do stacks on the rack.. then leaves the piano to be a piano...... make sense?
yes, makes sense, thanks. but this combination is even more expensive. can you (or anybody else) help me with another question? somebody wrote a comment on youtube that the s90es would be better than an s90xs but did not explain why. do you have an idea what this could be? i'm about to buy one of these and i am really interested in opinions of users who know these machines.
An update on the prices. I've seen the S90XS for £2039 and the S70XS for £1999. With regards to the screen, I bet it's very similar, if not the same, as the one used on the Motif XS rack.
except for a few bells and whistles.. not MUCH difference between that and S90es, so i think one would be better off with S90es and a Motif xs rack together....
I think I'll buy this instrument. The sounds are simply brilliant and the surface is full of controls which, as Bert says, is very convenient. What I don't know is the price (in EUR). These machines will come on the market in Europe on September, I think.
I'm kind of dissapointed about the screen on this board. It is so small, they should use something like the Motif XS screen, or atleast the ES screen.
It depends really, the Motif XS8 is a complete workstation, with built in song creation and voice editors.
While the S90XS is more reliant on a computer/DAW to do all of that. Its biggest strength is it provides an excellent piano voice and performance mode for stage.
Sound-wise they are identical except the S90 has a better piano. The S90 is a good choice If you use a computer to make songs. If you'd like to be able to do all that on the keyboard, then its the Motif.
kurzweil has 64 mb rom (small samples) and with vast and effects they try to 'stretch' the sound, and there are 32 layers per sound for some orchestral setups making it sound realistic.
i would just get the PC2R rack for the orchestral sounds and VAST but everything else: motif xs!
motif xs blows the kurzweil pc3x away for almost all sounds (winds, brass, guitars, drums). EP is on par imo. organs/orchestral are the only 2 categories where the pc3x is better than the motif xs.
but then again with motif xs, if you don't like a sound, you can download sample libraries...can't do that with pc3x: no audio input or sampler.
pc3x has VAST and analog modeling...but overall, the xs kills the kurzweil...kurzweil fans will beat their chest and cry, but its the truth!
I would like to add that it would be interesting to see what Kurzweil's R&D team could come up with if they had the same amount of resources made available to them that Yamaha's have had. Considering the problems Kurzweil have had in recent years it was just good to see them producing again. The more choice the better.
my piano teacher taught me to play piano with the hands as if you are holding a bowl (curved fingers)...the blonde chick is playing with flat fingers...lol
Which mindset is that?! Looks like she's doing alright to me...And please feel free to post the videos of the gear you're demoing for your endorsers...
I think that's a tad harsh, there's no point in endorsing someone if they can't actually perform (what I would class as talent and ability) is there? And just cos she has the image they want doesn't mean she doesn't care about content!
It depends what you class as great technique - to me it would mean that they were relaxed and solid enough on their instrument so as not to impair the delivery of their performance. So in that respect I would argue that there's nothing wrong with her technique.
No pianist/keyboardist I know has long nails because it impairs your ability to play a keyboard instrument. Hand position is critical and one of the first things taught when learning. So she either doesn't know how to play correctly or is prepared to sacrifice her playing ability by having inappropriately sized nails for purely cosmetic reasons. It's more likely to be the latter so therefore we can safely say content is not her main priority.
It may impair you're ability to play - but since she's not exactly playing anything on the piano that's too technically demanding I would be more likely to assume that she just feels that she can can look nice and still play well.
Maybe if she taught herself to play the piano then technique wouldn't be high on the list - perhaps it would just be a means to an end of getting out what she wanted to in the song (ie the content) which is surely why most people become a singer songwriter?!
Sorry...that should have been your not you're. And at the end (technique) I was talking about flat hands and your comment about not knowing how to play correctly and no longer the fingernails.
Would have been nice though if they'd have moved the pitch and modulation wheels on the S70XS above the lowest octave to make it shorter. The price difference between both keyboards is small and the difference in length isn't that great either. I don't see too many people going for the S70XS and it could be seen as a missed opportunity by Yamaha at offering a portable S-Series keyboard.
Now I've seen the actual prices for these two keyboards I find it hard to believe Yamaha can justify the price.
For the S90XS you're looking at £2822 and for the S70XS £2717. The S90ES can be had for less than £2000 so you're paying over £800 more for the sightly improved XS sounds and the new S6 piano sample.
I'm sure there are other modifications in there but I don't think this tallies up to £800 worth of improvements.
I hope you get one. Maybe even the price will drop when it is released, I'd like to think so anyway. I'm sure by going into a shop rather than buying online you'll get more knocked off.
In terms of the sounds, I'll have to hear it live to form an opinion, but I would want to assume that in three plus years, the technology has improved and that should translate to improved musical sounds.
1:57 ahhh this is so relaxing !!
2:20 here comes the climax
2:33 nice riff :X

and i have a hard time reading the little screen......

I'll let you know when i put it though speakers
mysticradio 2 years ago
ahhhhhhh screw it... i'll buy an S70xs...... but seems yamaha doesnt listen to its customer base... BIG SHOT CORPORATION doesnt need to listen I suppose
mysticradio 2 years ago
i got an email from SKB .. and the longest case they make is 57'' long..... and the S90xs is 58'' .. what are we to to besides buy the S70xs... why doesnt yamaha make a frickin case for this if they are going to go oversized..... always something
mysticradio 2 years ago
is it me... or is yamaha making these S series longer and longer..... its soooo hard to find a case for these things that arent like 500 dollars... why dont they frickin make cases for these oversized monsters. gawd.
mysticradio 2 years ago
its only updated as far as the S6 'aged wood'' piano
other than that its a motif xs buts. Makes sense a stage piano has the best piano sample... cause the piano on motif is good enough for workstation demos' and live. you see LOTS of yammy motifs on tv.
mysticradio 2 years ago
is this supposed to be the updated motif xs6?
Looks interesting and worth a look at in person.
I own a Motif xs tho, and afraid to buy the same keyboard with a different face. Does it have the same sounds?
bookofchapters 2 years ago
the thing i like about the XS is its SUPPOSED to have multi samples that you can play real light passages. Not just softer velocities of HARD HIT samples.
Every time they say they come up with a new piano...i dont hear leaps and bounds difference. but i will surely test one out.
mysticradio 2 years ago
I only suggest that set up if you ALREADY had an S90es... not both together....
if you are buying for the first time... then yes by all means go with the XS model.
or.. but a used S90es cause lots of people will be dropping their ESs to get the XS
and the S90XS is 5 pounds heavier.. god knows why...but yamaha is mysterious , people were already complaining about the ES weight... go figure.
or if you wanna go even cheaper... get the XS rack and get a inexpensive LIGHT WEIGHT controller...
mysticradio 2 years ago
thanks for your answer! i have ordered an S 90 XS today and i'll let you know what i think about it. :)
yapyapyapyapyap 2 years ago
well...... when you layer on these machines you lose polyphony fast. Especially if you play piano and do an arpeggio with your sustain down... there is cut off points.
The S90XS will be the same. but with 128 on the ES and 128 on the rack.. you have double the power.... and will sound way more HUGE than one synth. You can do stacks on the rack.. then leaves the piano to be a piano...... make sense?
mysticradio 2 years ago
yes, makes sense, thanks. but this combination is even more expensive. can you (or anybody else) help me with another question? somebody wrote a comment on youtube that the s90es would be better than an s90xs but did not explain why. do you have an idea what this could be? i'm about to buy one of these and i am really interested in opinions of users who know these machines.
yapyapyapyapyap 2 years ago
i think its time Yamaha gave the stage piano synths.. some of the TYROS supersounds.... yep I sure do....
mysticradio 2 years ago
An update on the prices. I've seen the S90XS for £2039 and the S70XS for £1999. With regards to the screen, I bet it's very similar, if not the same, as the one used on the Motif XS rack.
RedDevilNumber10 2 years ago
except for a few bells and whistles.. not MUCH difference between that and S90es, so i think one would be better off with S90es and a Motif xs rack together....
mysticradio 2 years ago
hi mysticradio, can you explain why i would be better off with a s90es and a motif rack?

On Dolphinmusic or something (musical shop online in england) they wrote that the Web Price for the S90XS is £2822.00.
This might be bad news for european people who wants to buy it =/
haakondale 2 years ago
Now i saw that the price on Musiciansbuy is $2399.99 for S90XS in U.S and it says they get it in store in august.
I don't know if what i'm saying is 100% correct but this is the information i have gotten out of a little research.

Impressive machine. Would anyone like to buy me one? ;)
RockyMHorse 2 years ago
I think I'll buy this instrument. The sounds are simply brilliant and the surface is full of controls which, as Bert says, is very convenient. What I don't know is the price (in EUR). These machines will come on the market in Europe on September, I think.

I'm kind of dissapointed about the screen on this board. It is so small, they should use something like the Motif XS screen, or atleast the ES screen.

help i want to get a piano that makes awesome beats for techno and stuff. should i get the yamaha motif xs8 or these? price don't matter.
davidiscoolerthanu 2 years ago
It depends really, the Motif XS8 is a complete workstation, with built in song creation and voice editors.
While the S90XS is more reliant on a computer/DAW to do all of that. Its biggest strength is it provides an excellent piano voice and performance mode for stage.
Sound-wise they are identical except the S90 has a better piano. The S90 is a good choice If you use a computer to make songs. If you'd like to be able to do all that on the keyboard, then its the Motif.

"Obviously having pretty looking nails is more important to her. Says a lot about her mindset."
What mindset would that be then? And please do post a link where we can see the videos of you demoing gear by a company you're endorsed by...
loz960 2 years ago
It isn't a prerequisite to have talent or even be good to get endorsed by a company, image is more important.
RedDevilNumber10 2 years ago
kurzweil has 64 mb rom (small samples) and with vast and effects they try to 'stretch' the sound, and there are 32 layers per sound for some orchestral setups making it sound realistic.
i would just get the PC2R rack for the orchestral sounds and VAST but everything else: motif xs!
lavakava 2 years ago
motif xs blows the kurzweil pc3x away for almost all sounds (winds, brass, guitars, drums). EP is on par imo. organs/orchestral are the only 2 categories where the pc3x is better than the motif xs.
but then again with motif xs, if you don't like a sound, you can download sample libraries...can't do that with pc3x: no audio input or sampler.
pc3x has VAST and analog modeling...but overall, the xs kills the kurzweil...kurzweil fans will beat their chest and cry, but its the truth!
lavakava 2 years ago
I would like to add that it would be interesting to see what Kurzweil's R&D team could come up with if they had the same amount of resources made available to them that Yamaha's have had. Considering the problems Kurzweil have had in recent years it was just good to see them producing again. The more choice the better.

How's the sax and violin on this synth?
koiki85 2 years ago
Expect them to be exactly the same as those in the Motif XS. So look for examples of those to get the idea.

my piano teacher taught me to play piano with the hands as if you are holding a bowl (curved fingers)...the blonde chick is playing with flat fingers...lol

RedDevilNumber10 2 years ago
Which mindset is that?! Looks like she's doing alright to me...And please feel free to post the videos of the gear you're demoing for your endorsers...
loz960 2 years ago
That image is more important than talent and ability.
I don't get paid to endorse equipment and nor would I want to. As I've already said being endorsed is about image and not about ability.
RedDevilNumber10 2 years ago
Since when has great music been about the artists' technique?!
loz960 2 years ago
What great music is there were the artist hasn't got great technique?
RedDevilNumber10 2 years ago
I think that's a tad harsh, there's no point in endorsing someone if they can't actually perform (what I would class as talent and ability) is there? And just cos she has the image they want doesn't mean she doesn't care about content!
It depends what you class as great technique - to me it would mean that they were relaxed and solid enough on their instrument so as not to impair the delivery of their performance. So in that respect I would argue that there's nothing wrong with her technique.
loz960 2 years ago
No pianist/keyboardist I know has long nails because it impairs your ability to play a keyboard instrument. Hand position is critical and one of the first things taught when learning. So she either doesn't know how to play correctly or is prepared to sacrifice her playing ability by having inappropriately sized nails for purely cosmetic reasons. It's more likely to be the latter so therefore we can safely say content is not her main priority.
RedDevilNumber10 2 years ago
It may impair you're ability to play - but since she's not exactly playing anything on the piano that's too technically demanding I would be more likely to assume that she just feels that she can can look nice and still play well.
Maybe if she taught herself to play the piano then technique wouldn't be high on the list - perhaps it would just be a means to an end of getting out what she wanted to in the song (ie the content) which is surely why most people become a singer songwriter?!
loz960 2 years ago
Sorry...that should have been your not you're. And at the end (technique) I was talking about flat hands and your comment about not knowing how to play correctly and no longer the fingernails.
loz960 2 years ago
@RedDevilNumber10 Sorry.... I should have watched to the end.

The keys on both keyboards are weighted.
RedDevilNumber10 2 years ago
Now I've seen the actual prices for these two keyboards I find it hard to believe Yamaha can justify the price.
For the S90XS you're looking at £2822 and for the S70XS £2717. The S90ES can be had for less than £2000 so you're paying over £800 more for the sightly improved XS sounds and the new S6 piano sample.
I'm sure there are other modifications in there but I don't think this tallies up to £800 worth of improvements.
RedDevilNumber10 2 years ago
Are the keys on the S70XS actually weighted and not semi weighted? If that's the case then that's really hot.
Dadee3 2 years ago
yeah ....the keys are FULLY WEIGHTED!!!!!!!

Bert is a very good tech sales guy. :)
In terms of the sounds, I'll have to hear it live to form an opinion, but I would want to assume that in three plus years, the technology has improved and that should translate to improved musical sounds.
