No, I wasn't actually being facetious. And yes, I am a linguist. One of the features of language is its constantly changing character -- if a word is used in a certain way by enough people for long enough, its meaning changes. That's the way living languages work. So the slack-jawed mouth breathers have the ultimate power, linguistically speaking, to redefine the meaning of words and to completely change the language we know and love.  Unfortunately.

Even if, technically, the 'right' way to use a given word is the most common way, no matter how much is linguaphiles and philologists grit our teeth about it, I still do adore a good rant about how stupid people sound when they do that. I think it's very ironic that your use of the word "fantastic" to describe "awesome" is exactly the same thing as the use of "awesome" you criticise.

Obviously fantastic is an adjective derived from "fantasy". So it originally meant something that is either a fantasy, or so unbelivable that it might considered one (often expressing disbelief).

But yeah they're both quite correct, languages have this annoying way of evolving with time.

Um, no. Check your Webster's dictionary. Fantastic doesn't derive from the word fantasy. It ultimately derives from the Greek word Phantastikos, which means "producing mental images" (and also according to Webster's, a synonym for "fantastic" is "unbelievable". Thus Jack used the word correctly).

My dictionary says both "fantasy" and "fantstic" have the same root "phantazesthai" (to appear). The original meaning in English of "fantasy" was "imagination", and fantastic "imaginary", they're the noun and adjective refering to the same thing.

But a current dictionary will also say that "asweome" also means "wonderful, extraordinary", just like fantastic can have a similar meaning.

In the early 70s, my dad and his friend were sitting around and decided to choose the most ridiculous word they could think of to replace other words like far-out or groovy. So, they started saying awesome all the time. In fact, they were friends with a Boston radio DJ and told him about their new word usage, and he started saying awesome on the radio.
