Seems like they are holding them on the wrong shoulder. Marching Tubas (convertibles) and Contras (Contrabass Bugles) are held on the left shoulder using your left hand to help support keeping the horn up, while your right hand is playing the valves. So it seems that they put the leadpipe in on the wrong side.

An instrument is only as good as the person playing it...it doesn't matter what kind of tuba you are playing, if your a good musician you will sound good regardless. I think they did a great job :) I play several types of tubas and they all have good and bad points

hey my band had a convertable like those and our tuba player played it very well. it didn't matter if the other band had five tubas he could outplay them, but he toned it down so he didn't overpower the band

Not necessarily true. Sousaphones are much better for ANY high school band and any instructor will tell you the same. They are much easier to handle, tune, and keep in tune. Only very talented bands such as Avon and Carmel really use contras. But on the flip side great bands also use sousaphones look at LD Bell from Hurst, Texas and Lassiter High School from Marietta, Georgia. So sorry to say, but sousaphones are, in fact, not horrible.
