the response relating this more to ten!akagi is spot on, but it works just as well for the series because the spectre of ten hangs over it: for everything that happens in akagi, akagi himself is destined to become something so free and so beautiful in the end.
I couldn't think of better gambler's song. You'll keep saying to yourself "It's going to be alright- oh please let it be alright..." after every dice roll. And no matter how you try to look tough, it'll always end with just your wistful prayers. The fact that the lyrics repeat themselves helps to drive that point home, I think. It's pretty genius: it represents the human insanity, which is doing the same thing and expecting different results. But, as Furuido shows us- it'll always ends the same.
Furuido is fine. But English translation in this clip seems incorrect. "Nantoka nare" is the imperative mood. So it can't be "Somehow I'll be fine", but it should be translated as, for example, "Let my fortune be better!".
@suzu639 You're right -- なんとかなれ!! is more of a desperate plea, "make it work out!", or with some embellishment on my part, "please just let this work out okay!!"
@jaakkopoika1 Totally agree. They didn't bet blood for money just wanting the thrill of bringing down another human being while risking losing his own life.
Ten is too obnoxious for me to be honest, it feels like Dragon Ball and Mahjong had a kid out of wedlock. But I'll read it where Akagi shows up so I can see how he deals with that cheating bastard Ten.
@Anontalkwarrior I didn't like Ten at first either, but once you get past the first two volumes (I believe Akagi shows up in the second one, if you're wondering) it gets really good. It's unusually shounen-ish early on because Fukumoto likely didn't know what to do with it, but after a while it's just as good and psychological as Akagi. And the ending will make you shed manly tears.
Love the first half of it, but when he starts repeating himself over and over, kinda ruins it for me. Realise without it, would lose a lot of emotion. Fortunately I am a robot, so I would prefer another verse or some shit.
There is a new series in motion out there now imo, which i assume is of the same origin as Akagi. The full name is Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji Hakairoku Hen.
I simply love it, as far as cruel life explanation goes :)
This is the kind of message that is the opposite of the one in Kaiji. "Somehow, it'll all work out"? That way of thinking is why you're still a loser.
@GabeMorris I think that's why this song ends abruptly with gunshot-like sound coming from akagi's 1 pin, basically Akagi saying "In your dreams, idiot."
All of fukumoto's works are psychological thrillers somewhat. Recently read Buraiden Gai and the protagonist is gutsy as hell. Made me think of the Winston Churchill quote "If you're going to through, keep going". Difference is Akagi is at home being the emperor of the japanese gambling underbelly.
@akiliase yes, very similar (and by the same guy). you may find it a little hard to follow if you don't know the rules of mahjong though, but if you liked kaiju, you'll like this.
In all honesty, this anime is atleast in my top 10 which is splendid considering that I have seen over 500 anime series!
One of the best psychological animes, and in all honesty, it was sort of a ''thriller'' cause of all the moments, when he was close to death and you never knew what he was gonna do .. That aspect of the show remained even AFTER watching it for tons and tons of times..
Too bad the anime ended without the final ''battle'' really ending.. -.-
@geenius3ab Wouldn't exactly call it a thriller. We know he never loses from the very start of the show. He's introduced as unbeatable. Plus it's a prequel to Ten, in which Akagi is described as an undefeated mahjong god.
@rthompson39 Actually for me it was a thriller cause you never knew HOW and WHAT he would do when his life was on the line.. It was a Thriller cause I lived ''into'' the anime.. And i friggin loved it, ^^
@HNCS2006 Ten was the series Fukumoto wrote before Akagi. In Ten Akagi is one of the main characters and he's an old man that's basically the god of mahjong. Akagi is the prequel that shows how he became a mahjong legend.
this song makes me lean back, watch all ive done in my life, and let one tear down for all ive done wrong in my life, and continue living like a true human being.
yeah i love this anime, i just wish the artist didnt do the noses/profiles so weird. the story and action and all that was totally awesome but i couldnt get over the weird art style.
Thanks for posting the full version! Were does the image of the video come from? it's really great. Is it original art from the anime, or is it a fanart?
Is it me or Japenese artists can make anything out as an anime? I recently watched Yakitate Ja-pan, which is the story of a boy named Kazuma Azuma who dream of one day creating a bread that would represent the Japan country. Sounds boring? Well, forget that, it's totaly awesome. It makes bread-making look incredibly great, epic even. They make bread-making as entertaining as a Kung-Fu fighting scene. I'm not kidding. Of course, it has to be the kind of anime you like.
I was thinking the same thing when I watched Kaiji, they make the most seemingly mundane gambling games (Rock paper scissors in the first arc) and make it into a crazy edge of your seat drama that's really entertaining exciting to watch.
Funny u mention that because i just finished watching the 26 episodes....and i got to to say...DAMN! that anime was amazin and yea it didnt have the boring rules of Mah Jhong.
