I thought parts of both novels were well over the top, but the concept was mind-blowing. also alex is not afriad to kill off main characters which is essential to getting through to the reader
Hi Alex, I have read both of your books First Light and After Light. They're up there with the best, I can see your books being made into a TV series such as Survivors. I loved the way the characters grew up in After Light, Jake was exactly how I imagined he would be. Living in Norwich I could also relate to the place names which made it more enjoyable.
Small world, because your brother was my lecturer at City College. I prefer your books alot more though
Read it in one go, I tried to put it down but the flow of the literature was very gripping. Scarrow is ruthlessly realistic in this novel. After reading this you will never look at civilisation in the same casual way. The question is not will any of us have to go, but HOW many of us will have to go?
11,961 hits? People people people, why has miley cyrus received over 133 Million views and this is 11,961? The WORLD IS MAD USA IS THE REASON WE WILL SUFFER, GET RID OF THEIR OFFAL ON YOU TUBE!
Here 11,841 views and x factors 2010 316,335 views, I hope with ALL sincerity that all those watching reality TV never get any help when the crash truly hits home. A small island for people with an IQ higher enough to realise this reality should be set up so they don't have to worry about sharing the world with the other 316,335! Bring it on.
@satoterror But that's the world for you. It will get worse under the Tories too; this short power stint will bring back greed and consumption the only two things that will ensure the undoing of humans. We have this uncanny knack of being handed the solution on a plate then throwing it to one side in favour of a far more ludicrously difficult scenario, whereby we struggle to survive and make events 10 times worse than they have to be. I wish it was not the case.
Absolutely nervewrecking novel, I was blown away from start to finish. Couldent stop once i began and when i closed the book after 9 hours of straight reading, i sat and stared out the window...just stared.
Thank you Alex, im making sure all i know, to read this mindboggling work of art.
Thankyou Gizmoz. You might like to know, I finished the sequel (working title is 'Twilight' - but that might change) last week. Takes place 10 yrs after the oil crash and follows Jenny and her kids.
Just finished reading the book, a absolutely excellent read! Interested in similar things? Watch "zeitgeist" an online, narrative film - 2hrs long but v interesting and eyeopening to say the least!
Hi PWFF, thanks for the feedback. Yes...I have Zeitgeist in my DVD collection, an excellent documentary. Can I ask a favour of you? Please spread the word about LAST LIGHT; as an unknown author, my writing career lives or dies on the back of word-of-mouth. Thx
so fucked...it really gets harder to believe how fucked we are with every passing day. I imagine this is how the denizens of Rome felt towards the end - a creeping sense of here-it-comes.
Im trying to tell my friends now that if the oil stopped coming, most of us would starve and everything would stop working. Of course, they dont believe me, but i only became aware of peak oil after i read the book. Brilliant piece of work.
I'm peak oil aware and got recommended this book on a few websites, Read it in just under 2 days, absolutely fantastic piece of work. I don't usually like fiction but this was gripping and felt so real (could be).
thank you. 'Last Light' was designed to educate the head-in-the-sand crowd in a very visceral in-yer-face way. Please...please spread the word as much as possible. The mainstream are so damned lethargic on this issue. They need to bloody well wake up.
I sure will do, a couple of people on my Uni course have already read it, but I will spread the word! As people need to wake up to this! Especially the Americans and Ourselves!
@takedown79 But the world population "ages ago" was NOT topping 7 BILLION people! Not enough oil means not enough food. I.e. lots of us will have to go. Simple mathematics
This will happen...faster than you think, albeit it won't go from cornucopia to zero oil in a week. Peak Oil is real, an dit will bring horrible change. Most of your jobs will be useless. Get your guns, ammo, and paper money into gold, silver, food, and water.
It's always a good thing to remind people what their lives depend upon... oil. Our civilization is like a living being. Oil is the blood that provides the energy, keeping this living being alive. Without oil, civilization as we know it, will die.
If this novel helps to awaken people to the precarious position we have got ourselves into, then it has been well worth the effort.

James Kunstler has written some very good factual books on PO. The Long Emergency is gripping, if somewhat grim.
