Pits are incredibly loyal animals and will protect their own.
The danger comes with owners who train them to be vicious fighters, neglect them, or fail to train them properly.
I don't care how 'sweet' your dog is, if someone is afraid of him and he leaps up to greet them, it could turn ugly when the person fights off the lovin'. Training your animal properly is important for any pet, but particularly for strong animals like these guys.

Adorable video! Pitbulls get such a bad rap for attacking children and adults that people refuse to realise that there are some gentle pits that are also gentle pitbulls. As a pitbull owner and foster mommy I can say I never thought I would own one, now I will never be without one. My older pittie is a rescue and nearly 11 years old....

owning any animal (especially one with a capacity to do inflict major damage with minimal effort) is a huge responsibility. you never hear the "other side" of those attack stories, but neglect and/or abuse is almost always at work...as it is when any animal goes bad. of course the owner will never explain to the police that they've neglected or otherwise abused their once-well-cared-for pet.

Any dog of a larger or heavier stature can easily injure or hurt a child. Its teaching your children as well as your dog how to be with each other.

Most dog bites are actually from Golden Retrievers. They also happen to be one of the most popular dogs. 51 % of dog bites are from the family pet while 49% are from dogs the people don't know. The percentage of dogs that are actual pit bulls are below 2%.

Also, dog bites that happen in communites that happen from a poodle, lab or another popular house dog may only get published once or twice in local papers. A dog bite thats from an APBT gets published over 50 to 100 times from local to national to internet papers and sites.
This is going to be a long and hard battle for APBTs and their owners. But It is worth it. Im proud to own a pit.
